IMKY 2008 Numbers

2,644 registered

1,975 starters

669 DNS (25.3%)

1,793 finishers

182 DNF (9.2%)

DNS + DNF = 851 (32.2%)

Net % finishers:    67.8%

So how does this compare to 2007?  I thought you'd never ask.

IMKY 2007 Participants:  2,131*
IMKY Finishers:  1564
% Finishers:  73%
143 DNFs  (8% of starters)
424 DNS (20% of those signed up)
*I'm not certain of this number.  They (Mdot) take down the number of people registered after event.
If you signed up for 2009, I'm not trying to freak you out but sometimes a little fear is a powerful motivational tool.

Awesome.

Does the number of finishers listed include those who finished in 17+ hours?

I dunno.  I got that number off of what Aaron posted on the IMKY watching thread.

Cube, I'm tapering from 140.6 miles a week to 0 miles a week.

So IMKY was tougher than any bar exam.  Pretty impressive stuff.

Be sure to include me.  I actually finished this dang race, even though my timing chip was showing somebody else and the BT tracking spreadsheet had me as a DNS.

I've got one of my analysts working on a bell-curve graph of finish times.  I occured to me last night from looking at the finish times that the there are only a handful of sub-12s, a few more sub-13s, a whole bunch of 14 and 15 hrs finishes and less 16 and 17 hr finishes.  I tried to verify this Gaussian distrobution graphically but hit my Excel knowledge ceiling so hard I've still got a bump on my lil' haid.

Stay tuned....there are still more numbers to crunch!  :-)

Just curious, since you like numbers- what's the typical DNS rate at Ironman? Could I get that with some error bars and standard deviations?

The finish times were converted to fractional days and put all the times is .05 day (1.2 hr) buckets.  The data is roughly bell shaped and the average was :
13:41:36

This confirms my theory....not just about IM finish times but life in general.  There are only marginal differences in MOST of us....there will always people people out on the extremes but we're not that much different.

The Excel file is too large.  I copied the .txt file from the website and manipulated it to conform to Excel.  If anyone wants it, PM your email address.

I can't find the spreadsheet that had the BTer's bib number.  Does anyone still have it?
