For the last month or so my trainings have been coming up to olympic distances.  This week on sunny afternoon ride I couldn't help it and just kept going.  Total distance was over 60miles with some pretty good climbs.  This was by far the longest distance and the next day I certainly had the reminder -- sore knees and fatigued legs.  Now here's the quesiton, 2 days later I feel good.  Do i have to go back to the olympic distances or can i jump to a higher base?  Is the 10% rule something that I risk injury if i don't adhere to?  If it can be accelerated, any suggestions on what should be the a good base target?  Thanks!

Unless you have a fit problem or resulting injury, upping the bike mileage more than 10% is fine.  If you can do 60 now with no problem, you could do 100 if you wanted.

I'm a big fan of the 10% rule - for running, which is much harder on your body than cycling.  Pedal away!

I generally treat the 10% rule as being primarily applicable to running, with greater stress placed on weight bearing joints. Swimming and biking (if you are spinning, not mashing) can go more according to how you feel.

how do i determine "good mechanics"?  Other than trying not to mash and keep tension through a circle...not sure what else to do...?

If you haven't get a good bike fit done if you're unsure of your mechanics.  The angles at play can be a blessing or curse to your body depend on how well you're set up.

I'd say sore knees after a 60 mile ride isn't so good. Fatigue in your legs is pretty normal and fine. Do you have underlying knee issues?

Yep you can up cycling miles faster in general.

Have fun riding but listen to your body.

Hang the code, and hang the rules. They're more like guidelines anyway

As long as you are smart about it and listen to your body, there is no real "10% rule."

Thanks for the encouragement.  In fact I did a 100mile ride yesterday.  The guidance was perfect.  Turns out my technique was poor and I was not unweighting my pedal on the upstroke (working against myself).  Although I was tragically slow, it was good to hit a new milestone.  Thanks!
