Along the same lines.....Is it bad to have Mdot apparel, but never have done a full? I have a tri top and visor with the logo(because they were cheap and work really well), but have never done the distance.

Naw. Honestly, the M-Dot logo is on so much stuff, lots of people who havn't done an IM wear it. Shoot, Timex has an IM watch.

The key is not wearing FINISHERS stuff before you have finished one.

How about no tatoo at all. I just don't get the "I want to brand myself" thing.

Now I am going to really start something.

Nah, everybody's entitled to their opinion. I already have 1 tattoo so another isn't that big a deal. I'm not the type to get a ton of them, but if/when I finish Longhorn I'd like to get something to commemorate it. To each their own.

Huh...I never even thought of this before...I had a timex ironman watch a decade before I ever considered doing a tri, let alone and IM

I have a Timex IM watch also, but the logo is so small it's barely readable. I didn't buy it for the logo anyway, just the functionality for the price.

Honestly, after I finished my first I realized walking through a store one day that I was a walking NAS Sports/WTC frickin' billboard .....

IMFL finisher hat, Eagleman 70.3 shirt, IM logo'd socks, Timex IM watch.  Damn, I should ask for advertising rates!!

Ironman is Ironman. If it was about the distance we could all train and then pick any day to swim 2.4, bike 112, and run 26.2 and say we did an Ironman. If that were the case then why is so hard to get into an actual Ironman event? Because it is an IRONMAN!

jonmetz - 2008-09-11 3:11 PM Ironman is Ironman. If it was about the distance we could all train and then pick any day to swim 2.4, bike 112, and run 26.2 and say we did an Ironman. If that were the case then why is so hard to get into an actual Ironman event? Because it is an IRONMAN!

Agree technically, disagree theoretically.

The Ironman M-Dot is trademarked, therefore only a sanctioned Ironman M-Dot race is an Ironman M-Dot race.

The 140.6 distance is the Iron distance no matter who sanctions the race. Yes, we could all do that combined distance on our own, but the logistical support offered by organized races makes it much "easier".

This thread is about the M-Dot tat. Personally I would not get an M-Dot tat if I had not done an M-Dot race, and will not get an M-Dot tat when I do complete an M-Dot race. I'm not really big on corporate logo tattoos. I will get a tattoo that is personal and significant to me. That being said,  IMO, one should only get the M-Dot if they have completed an M-Dot event, but it could be a full or a half, or any M-Dot sanctioned event.

To me, “Ironman” will always mean “Ironman”, ie, 140.6. I’m doing IM70.3 Rhode Island, next year, and if they want to hand me a finisher medal with an M-dot on it or say I’m an Ironman as I cross the finish line, that’s fine with me, but in my mind, what I’ll be is a half-ironman, NTTAWWT.

What about just getting the "M" and leaving off the dot.  Then when people ask what it means, you can say, "Mmmmm, not quite a full Ironman."

(I'm actually staying out of this debate.  This is just my normal, sarcatic commentary.)

I like the idea of a M-Dot with 70.3 not colored in and then filling it when you finish a full.

I was actually thinking about this on my way to work this morning... weird...

sooo...to ask another question....I will not have an opportunity to do an M-dot IM, but will be doing a non sanctioned race next year. But I was planning on getting a tattoo to commemorate the event...should I not use the Mdot logo...since technically it wasn't an Mdot race.  What should I get then...just the 140.6  or can I augment the mdot in some way to not actually be the logo but to signify that I have done the iron distance.

Uuhhhh... there have been many threads and discussions about this... but... to me the M-Dot represents 140.6 The distance. Not who put the race on. Although I know it's a corporate logo. But to me, getting the cute little guy is the same writing out 140.6. Just like I call "soda water", Coke and "facial tissues", Kleenex.

When triathletes see the M-Dot logo, they think, "Oh that person did an Ironman". Not "Oh, that person did 140.6 miles put on by Ford and the Ironman brand."

I agree... to me the M-Dot logo is about the distance not the race organization.

Just my .02 though...

I think If you feel good about it it's fine. is someone really goind to say ya you did 140.3 but your not REALLY an IronMan? I doubt it.

You can, but NAS will own the rights to your skin.  If you're OK with that.......

After I complete my first 70.3 (non-IM brand) hopefully next year, I want to get a tattoo, but just wouldn't feel right about getting the M-dot.  I'm a Harley guy too, and I think it would be like someone who rides a Big Dog getting a bar & shield tattoo.  (Equally good quality, just a different.)

I'm thinking I'll have something custom designed with 3 guys swimming, biking, & running with a 70.3 incorporated some how.  Of course, there'll be a space where I can add a 140.6 in the future. Cool

I just laugh at the people that think they are selling something or advertising for the company..

I'm sure the people you pass in the grocery store are going to see a mDot on something and immediately go out and attempt to register for a race that is already sold out and sells out in  hours or go buy some merchandise with a mDot on it

that really cracks me up

Considering that the IM-distance is 140.6 and not 140.3, it is a distinct possibility, yes.

I'd say go for it. It's your body, you shouldn't let other opinions stirr you differently than the way you truly feel. Be your own man.
