I enjoy the sprint and Oly distances b/c they allow me to focus on my strengths.  I was a sprinter in College and have still not managed to "correct" my pacing problem.  For me I can redline the Sprints and not worry about if I have enough to hold it.  The oly are more of the same.

My goal for next year is to compete in the Augusta, Georgia 70.3.  Not everyone is built for HIM or IM so it's nice to have races for everyone who has the drive and will to tri...

I just want to see how fast I can go. I have no desire to go longer than Oly.

Plus, when you can get up, go to a race & be home around lunch time the wife & kids stay much happier.

Thanks for the input.  Is there a mac-daddy sprint event?  Similiar to the hawaii ironman? ( I'm new and that is the most famous tri to me, it might not be.Laughing)

I love it! Mac-Daddy Sprint! Bring it on baby! Woooot!

Sprints and one oly here. I actually would want to try an IM but honestly don't know if I'd find the time to train for it in this lifetime... So... now that I've been doing this tri thing for 3 years, I think by next season, I'll feel 'almost' competitive at a sprint level. So that is an accomplishment!

I like sprints because it just about all my attention spane can handle and I like the amount of training that is required to prepare.

I enjoyed my first tri which was a sprint this year.

However I felt that although I could increase my speed the challenge wasn't enough for me personally.

I think the Olympic distance is great - however I would also like to do maybe 1 HIM every year or every other.

At this point doing a full Iron seems crazy, a friend of mine does marathons and he talks about the HUGE difference between doing 10-12 miles 4 times a week to hitting that 22-26 mile mark.

Whatever makes YOU happy should be what you do triathlon's for - don't let other people tell you that they aren't long enough!

Have FUN!! Be HAPPY!!!

briderdt - 2008-10-02 11:38 AM I've raced sprint to Olympic distance pretty much exclusively. I like the speed aspect. I can (and have) trained for distance, and quite frankly I don't find as much challenge in "making the distance". I prefer to ride the edge, push as hard as I can, and go at the risk of completely blowing up. It's my drug of choice.

Aww hell yeha you said it..... my last sprint the 30k bike was painfull and awesome!!

Personally i like these distances because you can easily compare times from one sprint to another. Im loving the improvements i am seeing....cant wait till next year!!

Oh and sprint finishes with another age grouper are mint.... ill win

I'm in the market for that drug, too.  I'm gonna dabble with a HIM this April, mainly because it's in New Orleans, which is close and fun.  After that, give me the .5/20/3 range up to an Olympic and let me try to puke.

And whoever said without the sprint distance, the sport wouldn't grow... I couldn't agree more.  It was much easier to jump into a mini-sprint (250yd, 8mi, 2mi) than an Olympic or longer.

A sprint race is like a gateway drug.  You eventually say "hey, I can do an OLY", then you do the OLY and say "I can do a HIM"...and that's as far as I know right now.

One reason is that they don't take as much training as the longer distances.

Another reason is that there are more of them to choose from than the longer distances.

Another reason is that they are cheaper.

Another reason is that the are less intimidating for beginners.

Well no official ones but I would think the Lifetime fitness triathlon and Chicago Triathlon are some of the biggest ones out there. Neither have the same history and awe as Kona but then again they are not as differcult to complete.

Sprints are fun and great for speed freaks and first timers.  They usually have an Oly event with them and that is a fun distance also.

I'd say the ITU Triathlon World Championships, held in a different country every year (2009 - Gold Coast, Australia, 2010 - Budapest, Hungary, 2011 - Beijing, China), but you'll have to qualify for it.

For me......there's something about that dizzying feeling from endorphine release, oxygen deprevation and muscle lock (ie gorilla on your back) coming down the final stretch of an all out butt-busting, nothing-left-in-the-tank, "lactate maximus" type effort!

When I finish a sprint race I have to immediately keep walking or I fear that I might puke on the volunteers trying to remove my timing chip.........seriously, I nearly puked on "Miss Middle Georgia" who was handing out the medals at the finish line in my last sprint tri.

Of course I felt the same during my Oly distance as well

This has turned out to be a cool thread. Glad to see others feel the way I do (and have the same time limitations).

The pressure to do more comes, oddly, from both ends of the spectrum.

Read too many serious tri forums and threads and you begin to wonder if you're not committed to the sport without a desire to go iron distance.

Tell non-athletes you are doing a tri, they ask the distances, then give you the old "that doesn't sound so bad", or "oh, its a mini-one". Dude, I'm not trying to *complete* it, I'm trying to haul at the speed of a$$ for over an hour!

I am targeting a HIM in May as more of a thing to prove to myself I can do it...However, it is a major headache from a time to train standpoint. Sprints are easy to do on my 5 hours a week of training I get in. I am MOP in my races. I am also done by 9:30am and can spend the rest of the day doing the 'have to's' around my house and spend time with my 4 kids. For my wife and I sprints are the perfect endpoint to a block of training. They give us something on the calendar to keep us training, but don't eat up so much time that it adversely affects kids homework and other activities...

After a dozen 1/2IM's and a couple of full distance over the last five years, I realized I preferred sprints..It's tough to say why exactly but I think I'm programmed for the intense, quick burst of racing vs. longer, steadier effort. Certainly, I'm more likely to come home with hardware in a sprint..

In the beginning, there was definitely the "Hey, I can do an Oly, how much worse could a half be? Or a full?" A little bit, I got to the 'been there/done that' place in re. long course.

Having said that, there's nothing to compare with thrill of the finisher's chute at an IM.

*slight hijack*
That is what I am so wanting to experience, just once. HIM next year. IM in '10. Bask in the glory of the finisher's chute.......then nothing but sprints and oly's.

I love that this sport calls something that takes me an hour and a half to finish a "sprint".
