Subject: Philadelphia Marathon

Okay, 6 weeks to go.  How is everyone doing?  I'm just starting my marathon training now ;) But I was HIM training so I have a fitness base to work with, sort of :)1

I'm (finally) done with tri's for the year.  I'm thinking for the next 6 weeks I am going to do the following Long Runs: 14, 16, 20, 20, 14, Race Sunday.  I'm thinking 35 miles this week; 40 miles, peak at 50, back down to 40-ish, then back to 30-ish, then taper week. Any thoughts on that?

Is anyone in the same boat as me? Doing and abbreviated marathon plan?

I'm coming off IMKY and just started re-building long runs.  14 this past weekend, 16 this weekend coming up.  Doing about 35-40 a week now, will peak around 50.  Haven't gotten beyond that yet.

Wow, you're blunt   There are no short cuts in life.  Well at least that's what my fifth grade gym teacher always said.

If I recall, you have somewhat of a running background?  If so, you can probably get away with that schedule.  If I rememeber wrong and you don't, then it looks a bit aggressive and I don't think I'd advise 2 20-mile runs back-to-back weeks like that.

I'm currently doing ~50mpw, which I'll keep up until the taper.  See you there!

Hey man!!  Very cool that you are running Philly, too!  What is your goal time (if you don't mind me asking)?

I do have a little bit of a running background (been running non-stop for a little over 3 years with 1 full marathon and six halfs under my belt).  I've done a few semi-long runs in the past three months - 10, 13 and 14-miler.  I know back-to-back 20-milers might be a little extreme, so I'm going to listen to my body and see if it lets me.  I'm going to focus on good Recovery (Ice Baths, elevated legs, Recovery nutrition) and hopefully that'll work.

LOL. You might be finishing your marathon at the same time I am finishing my half-marathon. I'm slow, but hoping to finish under 3:00. At the PDR, I finished in 3:16, but had a mental breakdown and walking the last 3 miles. I hope that doesn't happen again.

4:15 goal time for me. My plan calls for a few more 40 mile weeks, peaking at 18, 20, 17 mile long runs. Already done two 15 and one 17 mile runs. 8 weeks in with 6 to go till race day. This is a beginner plan.

Been taking a gel every six miles mixed with water only. Do I need more nutrition than that on a marathon? I don't have a set plan like I did for HIM. What is everyone doing for nutrition?

I like to get ~150 cal/hr or so (up to ~200 depending how I feel).  Mostly from sports drink (Gatorade Endurance in this case I think) plus a couple of gels along the way.  If you're going for 4+ hours, you certainly need some nutrition.  If you did a gel per 6 with water and then took Gatorade at some of the other stops, you'll probably be fine.  See how feel over your 20 mile run.

I tried to get in last year and it was closed, There are something like 15,000 slots however they are divided between the 3 races. I did the Harrisburg marathon instead last year. it was a nice event. Much smaller, easy to get to and they give away a nice wind jacket to finishers! One note is they use Cytomax and Cytomax gel on the course which caused me to have stomach issues in a race for the first time...

They've increased the size every year though, as you noted, it's only been an issue the last 2 years.  This year they had an 18,000 limit.

Here is an excellent article on tapering by Pete Pfitzinger.  Of all the running material available, I like Pfitzinger's advice and plans the best - hands down.  http://pfitzinger.com/labreports/marathontaper.shtml

And for the record, I lile Galloway's the least :p

Looks like I'm going to bump back my one 20-miler to three weeks prior to Race Day, as opposed to two weeks.  Which now that I think about it, is a much better idea.  Unfortunately though it looks like I may only get in one 20-miler than, when I ideally I would've like at least two.  Damn HIM training

I'm doing great, thanks. Doing F.I.R.S.T., with 5 20 milers total. Running 3x a week with bike a and swim on off days. Less really is more. I did the PDR and according to Macmillan I should easily make my BQ goal of 3:30.

I'm in the exact same boat as you...except that I don't have a good running background.

I plan on doing pretty much the same thing as you. I would like 2, 20 mile runs in but am going to listen to my body and see how I'm feeling. I'm not doign this marathon to prove anything to anyone or even to try and be fast. My only goal is to get through it so I can feel it before my Ironman next year.

I'm planning on a run between aid stations, walk the aid stations combo. I was also thinking of using one of the Cliff pacers. That will be a game time decsion for me though.

I'm doing ok...back from a little hiatus. I'm doing the half, so luckily my runs won't be too long. I'm up to 7.5 miles this weekend (following Galloway plan), so I feel pretty good. I'm just hoping we have good weather in Philly, and there aren't too many hills. Anyone know how tough the course is?

Course isn't too bad. There is one short decent hill in the first 1/3 of the course and then there is a long out and back section going into and out of manayunk which is near the end of the Marathon. Not too bad but it's still a several mile long hill. The half doesn't do that part i don't think.

Couple short hills for the half (all after mile 6 or 7)--you don't have to go to Manayunk.  Mostly flat.

In general, Philly is a reasonably fast course.  Lots of people use it to try to get their BQ.

Magella:  The more I think about it... we may not have time for two 20-milers.  I think I am changing my running plan to the following:

30+ miles this week, LR 14 ;

40+ miles, LR 16

50+ miles, LR 20

35-40 miles, LR 16 (possibly 18 or 20, depending on what my body tells me)

30+ miles, LR 10

taper week ... easy runs, 2 super-short tempo runs
