Pre-race routine:

This was a poker ride, not a race....so preparation was all about making sure I had enough clothes on! It was only 30 degrees at 9:30 when the ride started. Found LaVonne from the LUNA Chix, and we went in for a cup of coffee before the start, and to use the ladies' room. Met RugyRuss from BT, as well.
Event warmup:

I put shoe warmers in my shoes, which really helped! That's about all the warmup I did.
Bike
  • 1h 42m

Comments:

I had to walk three times--twice up the first pipeline trail and then once at the end of the last huge uphill...although I was walking faster than some riders at that point. It was crazy to ride up these steep hills, think you were to the end and then look up into the fog and see the bright colors of riders' jackets going up yet another hill. It kept happening like that-- the fog hid the hills. The sun came out as we finished. Everyone appeared to be having a lot of fun today, and there were around 300 people (best guess) compared to around 100 last year.

There were three poker stations on the course, and we also got one card and the start and the finish. They had great prizes and both LaVonne and Russ won some. My hand was a pair of 7s, not very interesting.
What would you do differently?:

Perhaps ride my mountain bike more often, and get better at hill climbing! I have to say that my bike is OLDE (yes, with an e, it's that old!) and ultra heavy, no shock absorbers besides under the big, cushy gel seat. I feel like I did pretty darn good all things considered.
Post race
Warm down:

We lucked out and got seated right away at the Redhook Brewery, the race HQ. We got a free beer with entry (mmm, porter!) and ate lunch. I had the California burger. So delicious, especially since I hadn't really fueled well before the ride, so I was hungry!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fat ass as usual! Also lack of mountain biking skills and lack of actual mountain bike. But I didn't do it for time and had a great day out there.

Event comments:

I will definitely do this one again next year--the money goes to a great organization and they were well-organized and had good swag as well.

Performance: Good
Wind: None
Course: Paved trails and then onto the pipeline trails....a lot of very steep ups and downs...some through the woods, some on the streets. The final downhill was insane since there was a gate and a road at the bottom so it required brake-holding for speed control (not that I would have let myself go any faster). There was one point where the 'real' mountain bikers were jumping fallen trees on their bikes, but I got off and lifted mine over. I am not equipped with things such as mountain biking skills. It was all I could do to stay upright in the lose gravel a few times!

You look awesome, as always, but also very cold! Nice job with the ride -- it says a lot that you can tackle something that difficult and still have a great time.

One thing I should add as a public service: If you are on Medusa Ann's wheel on the trail, be very careful. She likes to stop right on the cusp of a big downhill. :-)

Thanks for letting me ride with you, it made a great event even better.

I need to defend myself---it was a long, steep hill, very thick gravel.....and about 2/3 of the way down there were exposed 'beams' across the trail (probably to stop erosion) and I just didn't have the mad mountain bike skills to jump over so I either had to crash, stop suddenly, slow down a lot, or veer way off into the shrubbery.  I chose slow down....and due to the downhill braking I couldn't signal to you guys behind me that there was something in the trail!

Nevertheless.....it was totally fun!  We'll know what to look out for next year, for sure!  Thanks, Russ!

CHR15 TREE - 2009-01-21 3:32 AM

That sounds like the best ride ever... FREE BEER, porter too, only stout trumps that! And riding "Ye Olde Mountaine Bike" has gotta give a great offseason fitness boost.

A great take on the 'checkpoints' handing out playing cards... were the prizes based on the hands?

Great pics too I love your smile and your twin six jersey... give it to me

Yes, prizes were based on hands...mine was awful, pair of 7s.  Both Russ and LaVonne won stuff, so that was cool.  At least we got beer, pint glasses, lots of swag and a knit hat that says Stinky Spoke.

Chris, that shirt is mine, all mine!
