Subject: Whats your boss done for you?
Today at work my boss called me into her office and I'm thinkin I'm in some kinda deep doodoo cuz this is the 'big boss.' Big boss knows I'm a triathlete and have a HIM this year as well as most likely an IM distance race this year. She asked me a while back if I ever got massages and I told her I simply cannot afford them.....

Fast forward to the office visit-she introduced me to this lady and this lady happened to be the big bosses massage therapist and she was there to give ME a massage...and told me to tell the folks in my department I'd be busy for a bit.

Wow! Double wow!! It was amazing to be treated to something so nice! I am actuallt humbled by her thoughtfulness.

Please tell me there are other bosses out there who are openly, or secretly rooting for you?!

That's pretty awesome. Back when I did my ironman, my boss and a collegue took the time to search out my results while I was still off work and travelling back home. Theses are non-athletic type people, so I thought that was pretty nice.

That's really great!

When any one brings food to our office, my boss  (sincerely) suggests that they bring a healthy option for me. So, if a sales rep is coming in with coffee and donuts, they usually come with a fresh fruit cup for me. I appreciate the gesture and extra effort.

Um, not a dang thing.  He does not understand my drive, and pokes fun whenever possible: "You mean you PAID to torture yourself like that?"  "You RAN 26.2 miles?  I get tired DRIVING that far!"  "Share the road?  Why should I share the road?  The road is made for cars, not bikes, so you'd better stay off MY road!"

These are all actual comments he's made in relation to my training/racing.

very nice to see you guys so appreciative.  here, i'm the boss and i try to encourage a healthy lifestyle.  it can be trying at times, as you all know, and most times i just get on their nerves but over time i have seen some changes.  they snacks they bring have slowly become more healthy and i see far fewer buckets of cookies, brownies, and cakes come in.

i also give them the option of working out here at work, if they want to walk, use the treadmil, use the elliptical or the bike i give them 30 minutes on top of their lunch to get the workout done.  when the others came asking if they could take the half hour for non exercise things (like this was some new universal benefit) i told them this wasn't a democracy, that it was my program, that i had the blessing from HR, and "no" they couldn't.  big hurrah for the workout people!

Tag - good for you. That is great that you give that additional 30 minute option to workout. Seriously, great job!

To the OP, my boss (and team) will inquire about an upcoming race, or how I did afterwards. Most of them think I am crazy, but they are supportive and that is all I can ask. I did tell my boss the other day that I was going to cut out early so I could knock out a 9 mile run in the wonderful temp that day (70F), and she simply said "have fun".

My boss texts me on race day to see how I've done and he's been awesome about working with my schedule while I'm training for IMCDA. He is an athlete himself so he understands why my training is so important. Nice to hear that others have supportive supervisors as well

When I was first interested in tris, I was looking for a cheap road bike. My director (boss' boss' boss) got wind of it and gave me a late '80s Centurion. Later that year when I was looking for a trainer, my boss gave me his set of rollers. He never really liked them and wouldn't use them again.

My boss is very flexible with my schedule.  There are only 3 in our office and we work around each other's schedules so we can all get our workouts in.

That is an amazing story. Now when your boss starts to do the massage let us know. That is a whole different story! :-)

Seriously though, not my boss per se, but the organization I work for. We have a pretty nice fitness center on site with spinning and yoga classes, etc. , jogging trails outside in the woods (on packed dirt), bike racks, etc. It is really amazing. I get most of my workouts in at lunch and can ride my bike in and shower here. It is a really good deal. Oh, and they reimburse you $100 at the end of the year if you can prove that you participated in a fitness program (i.e., paid gym fees. No, they won't reimburse for new running shoes!).

These are great stories and i am glad to see there are some great supevisors that understand the rigors and commitment we make to the sport and staying healthy in general. For me personally he gave me a little extra $$ for race fees and equipment as a bonus this year, which certainly helps and when we move to our new office he is installing a showered bathroom and excercise area promarily so i can commute by bike to work a couple of times a month (35miles round trip) and to promote better health in our office, which is a bunch of overweight men, lolo.

My supervisor knows how much I train and figured out that I can't possibly swim three morning a week and get to work on time.  The pool doesn't open until 6am and my work starts at 7:30am.  So he just doesn't ever say anything to me when I walk in at 8:30am everday!

I think he admires my hard work and always asks me what I eat and how much I ran or swam!

I get more work done than other people despite my tardiness!

My boss is awesome. At my last day in the office before leaving for IM, my former boss (in cahoots with my current boss) had invited me to lunch. Well, he invited me like a week prior. Anyway, he drives me over to the restaurant of my choosing, and I walk in to discover a big table full of my work friends who all wanted to treat me to lunch and send me off to my IM. It was a great lunch, and it was awesome because they all asked so much about training and racing, and my race plan, etc. It was great to talk about it in depth with everyone, especially since they all planned to track me on race day.

Then, later that same day, I am sitting at my desk and suddenly hear "Chariots of Fire" playing from another part of my building. I turn to my boss as if to say, "Um, do you hear that?" and I discover that NO ONE is at their desks. Suddenly, like 50, maybe 60, co-workers come marching down the hall to my cubicle complete with music, cheering, balloons, noise makers, signs, and lots of fun gifts, including some gag gifts (e.g., swimmies in case I run into some problems during the swim). They also gave me a generous gift card which covered all my gas to LP as well as some other expenses. My boss organized the whole thing. Then, on Monday morning after a race, the whole team got into a conference room to call me to see how the race went .

Not hiring...just laying off more and more people. Another 6000-10000 set to be cut sometime soon. Not good.

My boss, where to start.  We are allowed flex time, but he does not want me to take it to exercize.  When I completed my first marathon a few weeks ago his secretary got a picture and wrote a small blurb to put in for the monthly, in house newsletter.  He tore the picture out, crossed out the text and told her she better not put that in the newletter.  He can't stop me from running at noon, but I am sure that he thinks about how to put meetings in during that time when he can.  He told some of my coworkers that he expects I will move soon.....  So he like wants me to quit the job because I want to train for triathlons and use some well earned flex time during hours that do not impact anything.......sigh.

Well, my boss (organization really) doesn't necessarily do things specifically for me but we do have a shower area so I can run at lunch and ride to/from work.  He also doesn't fuss at me when I leave a few minutes early to get to spin class on Wednesday nights or to the pool on Friday nights (it closes early).  Not big and fancy but it makes my life easier.
