I just ordered my first tri jersey and bike shorts.  I am so not looking forward to wearing them "outside".

I wondered how you felt the first time you wore it to a competition..............

I was excited.

I did my first two tri's in swim trunks and an old cotton t-shirt.  I picked up bike shorts, tri shorts, bike jerseys, (a road bike), clipless pedals, bike shoes, and a wetsuit during the off-season.  I'd worn them out in public during training rides/runs/swims.

A little funny, I have to admit.  Went away after the first race, though...

The tri suits don't hide much....

Definitely something you have to get used to!

After 3 seasons, I find myself doing things like mowing the lawn in them after a ride  It's only when the teenagers point and laugh that really make you question why you didn't throw on a pair of gym shorts OVER the spandex...

It's no big deal. What you have to learn is that no one else cares what you look like, so why should you.

Peeps are way too self-conscious.

Meh, I've walked into the grocery store in bike shorts and a cycling jersey on more than one occasion. Same with running clothes - the people at Whole Foods must LOVE me stinking up their store

I don't think I really felt anything?  I was excited about my first race, but not because of what I was wearing...

shoulda seen the time i decided on a lark to do a little wade fishing and all i had was a pair of low cut short leg training speedos.  i got a lot of looks and many laughs.  the funniest part was how they looked with my wade belt.

you'll get used to it, you'll blend in easily with a couple hundred other folks all wearing similar duds. Laughing

Over dressed. :D

My first triathlon was in 1983, and I had a trisuit. Most everyone else wore speedos, and not much else. (This was also after about 14 yrs of swim team workouts/meets/etc in speedos personally). So a trisuit was way more than I was used to.

Cycling stuff is the worst.  If they made tutus with a padded a$$ I think I'd choose that over  a team cycling kit.

Walk through the grocery store, Starbucks, really anywhere in mine.  Maybe I look like I am stuffed in a sausage casing, but I worked out and the rest of the people in the express lane did not

Overdressed is also what I was going to say.  Everyone else was wearing speedos, shoes and a hat.  It took me til my 2nd season to be brave enough to wear that in public.

Stood in line at subway after a long bike ride. Everybody stared at me like i just crawled out of the black lagoon. I might not be cute but I'm doing the best I can.

I wore a trisuit for my first sprint.  It was powder blue, super-sweet....and totally overthetop for a sprint...I kinda felt like everyone was eyeballin' me, but shrugged it off as soon as we got going.

I'm not sure which is worse -- the fat bulging out of my tri shorts or the fact that my "unisex" tri shorts have huge lilac stripes with baby blue trim down the sides. Oh well, they were the last pair my size and on sale for half price. I'm sure the colors are the last thing people are noticing anyway

I did stop by Taco Bell once on a long bike ride in my cycling shorts. I saw the look of horror on a teenage girl's face when she checked out my tree stumps for legs in spandex. It was so funny to me and so horrific for her it made me want to wear them more often in public.

trisuit for me....but same thing....here are several thoughts and questions that raced through my mind:

self-conscious. embarrassed.  do I look like a geek?  do I really want to wear this?  let me try in on on more time.  Honey, does this make me look fat?

than I wore it for the first time and looked around.  everyone was wearing the same thing.  I had a blast....

dont wory, your feelings will dissapair when you realize everyone is wearing the same thing!

no problem with wearing the spandex stuff at a race and when I train.  If I have a change of clothes I usually change before going inside of a public place.  Not so much for appearance but I really do not like wearing sweaty-padded shorts after working out.  funniest place I ever wore my spandex, I commute on bike to work sometimes.  At the last minute we decided to do happy hour after work on a day I rode my bike.  I show up to happy hour in full spandex.  yea, I got some pretty weird looks at the bar. imo...spandex only looks good on women.

I have to admit the first time I put on my tri shorts, I looked pretty good (from the waist down).  However, the predominantly red tri top (XL...not "normal" XL mind you) did little to hide the remaining spare tire...returned the top for a solid black one...now at least I look like I can play the part

At my first race it only took a few minutes to get accustomed to hundreds of people in tight spandex, and it didn't feel any different than any other setting with a lot of people - In public I've gotten a few odd looks and some redneck yelled something about me being a fag out of his car window one day while I was running in a pair of tri-shorts [I do sort of secretly wish he'd turned around and come back so he could have told all his Cletus-buddies how the "fag" whipped his punk-a$$ ] - But, who cares - What most people think or say reveals more about them than it does you anyway... So, put on that spandex and wear it proudly!

I just love your responses ! Thanks for the stories and the encouragement....

I got running tights a bit back, had never run in them and felt very "exposed"the first time I did...... never been one to wear tight things and feel comfortable in them.  I am so over that, the bike shorts would not be so bad, I think it's the tri top i'll have to get used too !

I wore a pair of tri shorts to my first sprint and was a little emabarrassed.....until i found out everyone else was wearing them and no one was talking about me.....they were talking about the guy who decided to wear boarding shorts instead of spandex....in this community spandex is the norm and anything else is considered wierd. You should fit right in.

Lost 30 lbs since last June, still have 10-12 to lose. I've worn tri shorts before which isn't any big deal but the tri top is a different story so I'll let you know what the reaction is if/when it ever happens.  Doesn't seem terribly likely though.

The tri I did in Octover I met a couple of lovely ladies and we were all there by ourselves... the Transition area was quite a way from the swim so after settting up we walked together back to the swim start in nothing but lycra... me in a tri suit and they in their swimsuits...

None of us had traditional triathlete bodies... we got to the swim start and one said something along the lines of 'I cant believe I just walked around in ublic in nothing but a swimsuit'!!!

But you know what I realised at that moment... in that context it just seemed normal... no one was checking anyone out they were their to race and spandex was just a part of that!

I always spend so much time worrying about what I look like in spandex, checking out my options in the mirror... worrying about my belly... but once i get to a race or start my workout/ride i just stop caring!!!

After that race I mentioned earlier I drove home and stopped at the supermarket on my way home... I was STARVING and walked around not just in my tri suit and hair a mess but with my race number still on and my medal... covered in a chamring mixture of sweat and sunscreen and who knows what else At that moment I didnt care one little bit!
