St. Anthony's Triathlon
84F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 34m 49s
Overall Rank = 2980/3651
Age Group = F30-34
Age Group Rank = 97/138
Event warmup:

Walking around. Standing around. Watching the pro's do their flying dismounts coming in from their bike rides. Yeah, it took that long for me to start.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 0 meters
  • / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim was cnx'ed. Instead we lined up for a time trial start. You could wear whatever you wanted (as long as it was legal) so almost everyone had helmets and stuff on. I would say this was one of the "unfair" things the RD did. Ideally he would have said you can't wear anything you wouldn't have coming out of the swim. I mean, people were all decked out in their GLOVES and SOCKS and CAMELBACKS. I could have gained a lot of time on those folks in transition if they had not been allowed to put all of that on before the start.
What would you do differently?:

Tell the RD not to be a pussy and let us swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Well, since I already had my helmet and sunglasses on, all I had to do was run to my spot, put on my bike shoes and GO. My flip flops were hard to run in. Otherwise, no real issues with this. I went as fast as I could.
What would you do differently?:

Find something easier to run in than flip flops.
Bike
  • 1h 24m 42s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Supposed to go RPE of 15/20. I think I did.

I saw a few instances of blatant drafting but the course amazingly was not much more crowded than I remember it being in years past.

Nothing else memorable. Yeah, it was windy.
Transition 2
  • 04m 15s
Comments:

Oh I sucked this one up. I couldn't find my rack. The problem was that instead of having bikes on the same rack in consecutive order...they did something else. Case in point...the bike racked right next to mine (so, on the same rack, just facing the other way) was racer #3664. My number was #3759. Wouldn't that confuse you?

I usually don't have a problem finding my bike. There were NO good landmarks. I was several rows in and right in the middle.
What would you do differently?:

Find my bike the first time.
Run
  • 1h 04m
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Hot. Very hot. Do I need to say anything else? I was supposed to go RPE of 17/20. I did okay to start, probably faded in the middle due to the heat, and picked it up a bit at the end. I was HURTING. So hot....OMG hot....
Post race
Warm down:

I couldn't find anyone so I just got my stuff and left.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Carrying an extra 50 pounds I don't need.

Event comments:

I probably won't ever do this race again. It wasn't just the RD decision to cnx the swim for everyone but pro's. I have to admit I think that was STUPID. The water wasn't that bad...the pro's times PROVED that. We could have handled it. Offer people the option to not do the swim and the majority of your folks that would have DNF'ed on the swim are probably going to take you up on it...and the other 95% of the people would have been able to do their whole triathlon.

Now, as to why I won't do this race again. The RD is a jackass. He always puts the women last! My original swim wave was scheduled to go off at 0858. 9am! 9-freaking AM in FREAKING FLORIDA! Seriously? The pro's would be LONG DONE before I even got to START! It's just flat out wrong to make the women have to deal with the worst of the heat every year. We've all complained and he won't change it. I will not do this race again until he changes that policy. I was going to MELT on that run.

Since I was last...the food tent was full so I didn't get any food. The massage tent was full so I didn't get a massage. This race just isn't worth the time or money it takes. I could have paid my coach for a month with the amount of money I spent on my HALF of a hotel room.

Nope, no more St. A's for me. I am done with it.

glad to see i'm not the only person upset that we didn't have the option to swim.   i swam yesterday with some BT'ers and was actually looking forward to the challenge.   when i found out that it was only a bike and run, i nearly walked away.   $160 for race fee and $165 for a hotel leaves a bad taste in my mouth.   the wife is quit unhappy about the turn of events.

i'm just glad i only live a couple hours down the road and my wave started at 7:30ish.   heck, i had finished, hit the food tent, and went into transition and most women were still coming in off the bike.   i probably was 1/2 way home before the last person finished.

this was the first event of this size i have done, so i don't know how it could have been changed....other than giving us a choice to swim.   i can't tell you how disappointed and upset i was when i found out.    really disappointed in my weekend.   other than finally getting to meet BT'ers, it was a waste of time and alot of money.

Sorry you had such te in your mouth from it this year.  Besides my shoulder surgery, Bob and I decided not to do it this year because of the cost anyway (HE never had to wait as long as MY wave used to be)!  What a double bummer you couldn't find anyone to vent with when it was over.  It must've been pretty bad in the water for them to cancel it.  I remember how bad it was a few years ago and they still held the swim....must've been a nightmare.

nice job.

I don't see myself doing this one again....there were some things done right - road closures...which is more a function of St Pete.  The RD did lots of underwhelming things, canceling the swim being the biggest of them.

For a different perspective:

What if someone drowned during the swim and the rescue team did not see it or able to save the person?  Still think it was a bad idea to cancel the swim?

I am sorry the race was such a negative experience.  Perhaps it's too big.  I have been to races where racers from certain range of numbers would rack on certain racks, but not necessarily in consecutive order.  That is confusing.
I think you should come go Cranberry in August.  Very well organized, and BBQ afterward!

I hope you still had fun.

Nice to see you

I couldn't find my rack either..no bikes were in my area back and the labels has all fallen off so I was lost for awhile trying to find my spot and my running shoes.

Swim I wasn't sad it was canceled. The cost of the race for just registration, add in what it cost for us to come from MA to do it, I'm not sure I'll do it again. I do like the flat fast bike course though. Sucks we women always run when it is 15 degrees hotter than for most men. Food and massage lines were to long for me as was getting my bike in time to make hotel late check out.

Well, I live in Texas and let me tell you... if someone drowns NO ONE will see them. Our lake water is nasty and you can't see 2 inches in front of your face.

Yes, someone drowning WOULD be horrible. Absolutely. And unfortunately some people who have no business swimming in rough water, will try it. But saying that someone would not be saved because they couldn't see them... is a bit odd, at least in my book since all our swims are that way.

Anyways... $160 for a race that's isn't a HIM? ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? WOW! Expensive stuff.

You did a good job out there, but it's probably a smart idea to not do this race again.

160? for a tri?  Never.   That's just not right.   They'd have to do some pretty amazing things for me to believe it was worth it, and so far, I  haven't heard "amazing".  I'll just cross THAT one off my "to do" list.

Congrats on hitting your RPEs despite the lousy race logistics....was the water really that bad?  How'd it compare to 3 years ago when the dude drowned?

It's come a long way, this race, from the group love from a couple years ago to the expensive mob scene that we've got now.  It's the poster-child for a race that has outgrown it's value to the athlete. Sorry that it's your last, but I understand, I made that same decision starting 2 years earlier.

I don't regret it for a second, I don't think you will either.  I know I don't miss that friggin cot at La Veranda.

Nice race Jen. I feel you about the swim. A swim at your own risk would have been nice. But I do understand why they do it. As for the heat and wave times, most people know this going in. In 3 weeks I'm doing IMFL 70.3 and i'm in like the last or second to last wave. You have to roll with the punches and make the best out of it.

Actually, you DO NOT know when you sign up.  Wave starts are not officially posted until a few months (sometimes less) before a race.  And my only point is that he should at least ALTERNATE the swim waves from year to year so that's it's gender-fair.  The women get screwed at this race...big time.

Nice JOb Jen.  Sorry you are so upset.  The swim waves me off too.  And I have complained to the COO of St. Anthonys. Maybe we all ned to bomb Phillip LaHaye with emails.  Maybe he wants it to be a men's only race.

Glad I opted out this year. The cost and logistics just aren't worth it. Lots of other races out there. Sorry you had such a bad time of it. Don't forget that the more mature (older) get to start late. I did the Nation's Tri last year and didn't start until 840 in the next to last wave. By then the temp topped 90
