Subject: Buying a Wet Suit...Do I need sleeves?

I am doing my first tri in July and I'm looking to buy a wet suit. The water temp of the reservoir on race day should be about 70. But, I will want to train in the wetsuit in open water before then (with colder temps). Do I need a wetsuit with sleeves? Anyone have any recs for a good value?

I was also thinking about buying used until I read that thread about everybody peeing in their wetsuit-- I think Ill just get a new one

Thanks,
Lou - Utah

This has been debated a lot, but my feeling is that if you're going to buy a wetsuit, you might as well get one with sleeves. As long as you get one that fits, you won't have any problem with range of motion, plus you'll be warmer in cold water and more buoyant.

Now is a great time to get a wetsuit, since there are tons of sales on the '08 models.

I personally have a sleeveless and really like it, but I've never had/tried a full one, so i really can't compare

I think it depends on the water temperatures you are likely to face.  I have a sleeveless model that I like since there is no constriction in range of motion, and I think it is easier to remove as I approach T1.  However, I haven't faced any supercold waters.

I'm in the same boat, getting ready for the Steelhead in Lake Michigan this August. I'm thinking sleeves are the way to go. Does anyone have any good website/store recs to find a good deal? I've tried trisports.com, but all of their closeout sales are xxs. Thanks for your help.

This is the website for a shop not too far from where I live.  They have a ton of wetsuits in stock.  They've also got some on sale right now.

I've had both sleeveless and sleeves as I've lost weight so I'm on wetsuit #4 and find the ones with sleeves are more comfortable. The sleeveless one felt more constricting in my chest and around where the edge of the arm opening was.

I much prefer the two piece DeSoto design over typical full sleeve wetsuit as it is less restrictive in both your arms and in your body length.

If you get sleeveless you may get into a cold  water race that then you'll wish you had sleeves. I've done races where water is about 55 and sleeveless would not have worked for me as just getting my face in the water was a challenge enough.

Most of my races with wetsuites are barely wetsuit legal (ie, warm water) so I prefer sleeveless for temperature comfort.  I find it less restrictive for my shoulders also, though most people say that properly fitted sleeved wetsuits are not restrictive.

Given you are in Utah, probably a sleeved wetsuit is the way to go.  In 70 degree water you shouldn't feel too warm.

IMHO, full sleeves is the way to go.  As stated above, if it fits properly, the newer suits allow plenty of range of motion in the shoulders.  If it's cold enough that I want a wetsuit, I want the extra warmth of sleeves.  If it's warm enought that I can be comfortable in a sleeveless suit, then it's warm enough that I could just HTFU and go without one at all.  Admittedly, many of my OWS's are in 60-65 deg water here in PA.

You do have another option that satisfies both criteria:

-Buy a sleeveless wetsuit.  Then you are covered for warmer races

-Buy the QRoo Speed Sleeves.  They are just the sleeve portion of a wetsuit.

This gives you nearly the best of both worlds.  You get the ROM freedom of a sleeveless and the ability to add near the same warmth & buoyency of a full.  The only exposed part is your shoulders.  Having had 2 shoulder surgeries, I found that even with a properly fit full, my arms didn't feel like they had the same ROM as in a sleeveless - and they *felt* like the fatigued quicker.  Could be me, could be the brand.  Being from Arizona I didn't have a lot of justification for a full anyway.

sleeves, it's faster.. enough reason right there.

Get one where you have good range of motion in your shoulders. Also one that has just enough room to pee in.

x2. There was a study just a bit ago where they compared bottoms only, a sleeveless and a sleeved, and the sleeved was the fastest.

Do you think when you are standing next to 100 other people all peeing in their wetsuits that all if it stays inside the suit?

...and they are much more bouyant. Last night, my wife and her friend did an OWS and the friend wore a full sleeve for the first time after only using a sleevless. She was shoked at how much more she floated in the full sleeve.

Awesome! Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm going with sleeves. I can use any speed advantage I can getWink.  There's a guy on ebay selling new Orca Sonar wetsuits for $149. Anybody have any experience with that suit? Is that a pretty good deal?

Sounds like a slammin deal to me.  Just be sure of the size, since returns are not possible with that seller.

It's a good deal if it fits. See if there are any local places where you can try them on, borrow from friends, etc. Fit in wetsuits is highly individualized.

Hey, if it warms the water enough, you won't need a wetsuit!

Just got a email from xterrawetsuits.com. Their $400 wetsuit is half price, usually $400, on sale for $195. Use promo code SPRING. (Must use caps as per email)
