I love training. I do it on my lunch break and after work so it breaks up my work day.

Yes I enjoy training very much. To me, doing something you dislike day-after-day (training) in order to do something you do like just a few days a year (racing) doesn't make much sense.

I have to make myself train sometimes... but once i get into it i feel great.  I had my first triathlon last week and that gave me a TON of motivation to train further.

My only problem is i have a sensitive ego, and whenever a workout doesn't go well (i can barely last 10 miles on the bike or my pace workouts completely blow),  I get depressed for a few days.  It sucks cause i try so hard but sometimes i just fail.

Its a part of life tho

But i promise, after you do a tri, you'll enjoy training a lot more

I love both. But, I get so darn nervous and worked up for EVERY race (I've been doing this for four years now) that I hate race week. I love being out there on race day, but in the days preceeding it, I don't look forward to it at all, just because I hate the nerves and stress I put on myself.

I really love to train. The bike and swim are new to me so it's true I won't really be racing when i do my first tri in a couple of weeks. Honestly, the event is the reason for the training so without the goal I am not sure I would be so totally dedicated.  Nor would I really push myself to find out where my training has really gotten me.  I ran my fifth half marathon today. It was fun but there was a point where it was mentally tough. I didn't love the whole thing while I was doing it but i feel like I just did an amazing thing for myself afterward.

Yeah I love training most times.

Swimming- I have done since I can remember, so it's ok, but I don't get excited about it. I just do it and enjoy it for the most part.

Biking- Now this I love!! I really never rode much at all before. In fact I hadn't since before I could drive, so 20 years. I got a pretty nice fuji road bike when I decided to start this and it is actually my favorite part of training and racing. I love hills, and feel empowered when I climb a killer one. Even better down hill, I can't go fast enough. If I get sick of the swimming and running I will cycle forever.

Running- I like it when I feel good, and can keep a good pace. Sometimes I don't like it. Funny it seems the better shape I am in, the more I am ok with it. I get tired of my legs hurting sometimes.

Run - I'll never stop running. I love it.
Bike - I enjoy every ride I do.
Swim - It depends, as I get better I love it more and more.

Since we train much more than we compete, I don't see how you can race and don't enjoy training.

also, i do like talking to people, and when they ask what i did for a workout today, it is cool to get the 'what?!' ' you are crazy'  ' i couldn't even run X miles!'  etc

This is one of the only things that has kept me motivated for the higher volume half IM training--knowing that almost no one I know on more than an aquaintance basis is training as hard as I am. The half IM training caused me to cross the line in which it feels mostly enjoyable and only a tiny bit like work to feeling mostly like work and only a tiny bit enjoyable.

This is how I know that I need to go back to Olympics and Sprints. I miss my nice balance between cardio and weight training, between speed/power workouts and endurance workouts. The half IM training threw the balance off so this will be my last (for now). I really miss my ripped arms

Once I get going, I do enjoy training.  The hardest part is just getting off my arse and getting going.  I like the "wow, I'm tired and it's cause I actually DID something" feeling at the end of it.  And it enables my bacon cheesburgers & beer habit.

I like both equally.

For me, every bit of training is focused on some part of the race. Every time I go out, I'm practicing some little part of the race. If its not actually at race pace, its mental, its physiologic, or nutritional, practice for race day. So its hard to just enjoy one and not the other. I also really enjoy the structure that training for a race provides. Also helps with the IBD, so that's a plus.

The only thing I don't enjoy in the moment is swimming. I'm not very good yet, but every once in a while I'll put together like 3 or 4 good strokes and it just feels awesome, makes it all worth it. Especially as those sets of good strokes become more frequent.

I think its the perpetual climb towards perfection that I find most enjoyable. Its something I can always keep getting better at, from now til the day I drop dead.

I do enjoy training.  It's taken a solid year for me to see real improvements, and I'm enjoying that aspect.  Some days it does feel like work, but I remember this is a hobby, it's supposed to be fun---and I give myself a break, have some fun with whatever workout I'm doing.

Getting to the point now that I would really rather have people around to train with than just by myself, too.  Racing, other than nervous dry heaves, is fun, though this will be the first season I'll actually be setting goals other than just to finish.

Improvement is self distilled motivation!

I have to remind myself when I'm training that I'm doing it because I enjoy the sport. Then, I like to train. It's always great to get out and see God's great earth and all His creation.

Do I look forward to every workout? No, but fast forward 10 minutes in the workout and I'm enjoying every bit of it.

I still have to figure if I prefer training or racing.

I am with you on this. I like to bike/run early so I dont have to think about it all day.

I have not done a tri yet, but I have done 1 marathon and 3 halfs. Looking forward to my first race in June! Very nervous.

I DON'T like training, but I LOVE writing my time and miles in my log.  Sometimes I open up my training calendar and just stare at what I have done so far each month and smile.

I am a former couch potato beating the lazy out of myself one day at a time.

That's one of the main reasons I stopped having a coach and switched to a BT training plan. I didn't need another person setting goals for me (yeah, they were my goals too, but still).

I love the goals in Triathlon. I live for beating my weekly, monthly, yearly numbers. I'm the type that has to be active and has to have a goal in life. I don't really know if I can say that I love Cycling, swimming or running but I need to workout and have goals.
I dig open water swims but hate the AM pool swims. The only thing I like about cycling 5 hours is that I got a killer workout and I can log those numbers. I do love MTB'ing and trail running.

The racing scene is awesome and it drives my training. After I complete the HIM and IM this year I will have done two of most Triathlon distance races and will stop chasing race distance goals and start trying to place in shorter races like Xterra. Some times I wonder if I do this because I love it or I need it. I think it depends when you ask me. Right now, I'm 23 weeks into an IM training plan and kind of ready for a break. What keeps me going is that I keep breaking my distance records each week.
I guess my answer is "I need this to stay sane!" If it isn't Triathlon, it would be something else!

I love the training; it only occupies a small amount of my day, but it makes the whole day seem a little more worth while.

As for the racing...I wouldn't know yet.  I've been training for about 8 months so far without any race to speak of.  The race will definitely be a good measurement of whether or not my training paid off.

Definitely train to race. Racing is the only thing that keeps me motivated to train. I used to do the "exercise just for my health" thing and I couldn't get motivated. I also was in the worst shape of my life. If I don't have a race to train for I start finding reasons to just blow off training (especially swimming).

I enjoy training on most days, but then there are those days where I really just dont wanna get out of bed and have to drag myself to do anything.
