Veteran 190 | Subject: Should I be Offended? Cause I am! So I'm in a group of about 20 other moms that train together with a coach once a week in preparation for a race in September - generally a fun, supportive group. Four of us raced this past weekend because we couldn't wait until Sept - (a try-a-tri of 375m,10k 2.5k) and I was pleased with my results especially my bike leg where I placed 15/82 in my AG and 114/387 in the field (27:14 for the 10k in the pouring rain no less!). |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Should I be Offended? Cause I am! Yes, it is mostly the engine and you have every right to be bothered by their comments. This sparks more of jealousy than anything else and sounds really petty on their part. 15/82 is front of the pack (FOP) and I can guarantee that you beat other people on road bikes as well, not just all the hybrid/mountain bike crowd. Be proud of your accomplishment. And welcome to BT!! |

Yeah, let them ride your bike and see if they are faster. Yes, the bike does help SOME... but not completely. Ignore those ladies. They are just being catty. Like women can be. |

Expert 1053 Culpeper, VA | Subject: RE: Should I be Offended? Cause I am! Yes and no. Even a vintage road bike is probably a bit better than garden variety mountain bikes I suppose, but over a short distance I'm not sure the difference would be that much. We are a unique bunch with interesting dynamics when we get together. You know you're working hard, so I would just let them think whatever they want. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Should I be Offended? Cause I am! It sounds like a definate excuse to go buy a Cervelo P3 and say, ok NOW it is the bike, catch me if you can! Ok well that was jk. When I got my tri bike, the first day I was 3-4 mph faster than I was on my moutain bike. My fitness was the same. A bike can help, but it takes nothing away from your fitness level. You have earned your fitness level and if they don't want to fork out the $50 (or whatever) for a comperable bike to yours, well then you can be nice and wait for them at the finish line.... The clock does not care what equipment you do or don't have. Some folks do not progress as quickly in any sport as others. Sometimes that frustration can turn into snippy remarks that are made in the heat of the moment. Others take that frustration and chanel it into more effort to overcome the genetics they were born with. It is usualy best to be the adult and invite them to be adults as well, but sometimes ya it makes you want to go get a good workout on the punching bag. Other really key ways to ps someone off is to say, you only did a Sprint, Oly, HIM..... when are you going to do a real traithlon (IM) by which of course they mean Kona because they have no idea..... I completed my first sprint tri this weekend and got snubbed by my best friend because I did one first. And she's the one who qualified for the Boston Marathon twice! It's frustrating, but take the high road. Invite them to do more rides with you if they have time or have them come to a spin class. And keep working your butt off because you deserve everything that YOU earn. |

Just beat them in the swim/run as well and squish their excuses. |

Master 2638 | Subject: RE: Should I be Offended? Cause I am! Those ladies are just jealous of your engine and what all of those bike rides have done for your legs. Sometimes folks say stuff without meaning it to offend you, so let the comments roll off. . . and really kick-azz at the Sept race. Way to go on your first race! Keep up the good work! |

Master 2477 Oceanside, California | Subject: RE: Should I be Offended? Cause I am! Since I have been married, and my life has seemed to have finally fallen in place (job, school, finances, relationship, kids, etc.) I was appalled with the amount of people that will be your friend when they feel superior, but cannot be happy for you when the results of your effort pay off. It used to really upset my wife when they would talk about our relationship. "Why are you holding out? The guy you describe does not exist... Ok, he seems fine now, wait to you have a ring on your finger... ok, you are married, wait until the anniversary... Happy Anniversary, wait until you have a kid... congrats on the kid, all men are the same, just wait until the second kid... etc. etc" My wife and I have adopted a new motto in life. "Work hard enough to be as lucky as they (the haters) say we are." When we choose people to be our friends, we found one make-or-break criteria. Can they be genuinely happy for other people? Tell them some good news about another person. How do they react? You have seen their character. Edited by eabeam 2009-06-23 2:52 PM |

Veteran 190 | Subject: RE: Should I be Offended? Cause I am! Thanks everyone! I guess I'm just surprised that these women would choose to belittle what I think is a big acheivement. I chose not to rent/buy a wetsuit and I don't compare the times of others to mine and say "the wetsuit is why their time is better" - I say I need to work on my swim. I don't look at the other's run times and say well "she is faster because she weighs 50 pounds less than me" - I say lose some more weight and run more and my time will improve.

You run your own race, a lot of people have a very hard time doing that, they are too busy trying to make themselves look better by bringing everyone else down. Thanks everyone! You have seen their character. After getting heckled during a recent training run by several people at a bus stop we passed, I said to kat_astrophe that "I've come to believe that the American dream has nothing to do with fancy cars, big houses, or picket fences. The 21st-century American Dream isn't to rise above and get up on top of everyone else, it's to pull them down to your level, then sit on 'em and be on top that way." |
