Whitfield, who looked like he'd been dropped from the front running pack a few times, hangs in there and outkicks Frodeno.  Sweet Redemption.  If you look at the replay from behind, you'll see Frodeno almost ran right into the barrier at the very end.

Love the desperation dive for 2nd place.

It was an amazing race!  Great to see Simon rebound from a rough outing at the Washington event to capture the biggest payday in the sport!

Thanks for the heads up.  Saw your post 5 minutes before it started.  Great finish in the men's race.  Would like to have seen some more coverage of the women.  I think they could have given them more than 5-10 minutes.

I guess Oakley Radars slow you down on sprint finishes. Good thing Simon was the only one not wearing them.

I caught most of this on TV and have a question.
Were there no women in this race?  I didn't see them cover any women at all.
I was doing some cleaning at the same time so wasn't glued to the TV so I guess I could have missed it.  The announcer was female but I didn't see any female athletes and I watched most of the coverage.

The women's race happened before the men's race so they are not on the course at the same time (that would lead to all kinds of confusion in an ITU event).  For some reason, they decided to only show a few highlights of the women's race before showing much of the men's race.

If you are interested, you can watch many of the past ITU races at their website (www.triathlon.org) and they brodcast some events live as well.

Got to be there in person and "holy smokes" did those guys truly define "digging deep" for that last push. Not sure about others, but blazing into a full sprint for 100 yards into the finish line would be excruciatingly painful for me.

I managed to get a solid pic with Kemper. Forgive the goofiness as I had just come from the post-race beer tent.

It is; the women's race was pretty exciting as well (in a different way); normally when ITU events are brodcast they tend to focus more on the men's race but this is by far the worst coverage of a women's race I have seen.

This is why I try to catch these events live on www.triathlon.org even if it is being brodcast later.  The ITU does a really good job of their online brodcasts and they seem to raise the bar with every brodcast.

Simon has a wicked finishing kick .. we're pretty proud of him here. ;-)

Remember the Olympics? Threw the hat aside and dug deep - came from way back to medal. Just awesome.

Watched last night (Tivo). Unreal finish. They all used roadbike handlebars with the "small" aero cli-ons. Was this becuase the narrow course?

I was wondering the same thing.  And why no aero helmets?  Are they illegal? Insane kick at the end.  I also wish they showed more of the women results.  Or atleast the splits these guys had.

It was an ITU sanctioned race, and therefore are draft legal.  Because of that, the rules require the setups like they have because the athletes are going to be in more pace lines than they are single/aero spots, and for safety they need the brakes and gears on the hoods vs. the aero bar extensions.
