Pre-race routine:

Woke up with enough time to watch my coffee pot overflow and make a second pot while playing a game of chess with my 11 year old son (which I lost!) Had a bowl of cereal in the car while going to my sisters.
Event warmup:

None, didn't even get my hr monitor set up properly, so time is approx.
Run
  • 2h 11m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m  min/mile
Comments:

I have had no desire to run this past month and no extra energy to force it. Between chronic crisises and a cold virus this week, I was strongly leaning toward bailing on this race. But my son said "mum, you would just tell me to go do my best; so go do the best you can do today - and if you walk or stop, it's doesn’t matter. The time is not that important"

So off I drove on the slippery roads to get to Jo's careening all over on the way, to find that she is still in her PJ's and she tells me she is not racing (yeah, only joking she said - while I had quick, lovely visions of coffee and muffin instead of a cold wet race!!). John drops us off, we thinking we are actually pretty organized, determined this time to not start in a panic. Casually getting our gear set up and notice there are lots of volunteers around, but not many runners. Figured we were in the wrong tent, so I asked one of the women there and she replied “Oh, they are gone.” GONE???? WHAT DO YOU MEAN GONE??? Well, I guess I had just got in my head somewhere along the line that this race started at 8:30, and never thought to actually check this!!! Thank God it was Jo I was with, so we burst out laughing and gave very serious consideration to skipping the run all together and going for a coffee and chat. But upon discovering we had no money, we decided we’d begin and see what happened.

Well neither of us have EVER had a run partner – and yet we ran perfectly in sync. It was wonderful to simply enjoy the run, the company and watch Jo do snow dances and play the air guitar as we ran. I thought near the end that I had never been so comfortable in a race before – well considering I stayed at 70% heart rate the for almost all of the “race” – I guess that explains it. We kicked it up just a notch for the last three km, and crossed hand in hand.

This ‘race’ was the most special event I have done – because I ran with Jo and I know in my soul that despite all the hell of these past months – I am rich with family and friends, and that I know I won’t lose that.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing, if we had showed up on time the whole event would have been different.
Post race
Warm down:

Joined Jo's husband John and Grant (Shrike) for hugs, snacks and a chat. Grant had run a great race and stuck around in the miserable weather to cheer us on at the finish - thanks. :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not having the drive/desire to work harder right now.

Event comments:

Definitely do it again.

Great race Sann, you are an awesome runner, BUT an even better mum!!! How great that you were given a dose of your own medicine and from your son to boot! I love it! You are raising those boys rights, they are real troopers and so are you!!

You overcame circumstances and difficulites to do what the vast majority of people only dream of being able to do!!

You and Jo are both very blessed to have one another! I wish I could have run with you two fine ladies and I could have belted out a few choruses while Jo played the air guitar! ha!

I'm proud of you!!!

Kristi

You are an amazing athlete.  I know you've been very busy, very preoccupied.  You've not really been training very hard and on a whim, go out and rip off a half mary.  Unbelievable.  I totally envy your running genes.  Great race report.

Sweetie, you ROCKED out there. Like I said, watching you and Joey come in hand-in-hand was my race highlight. You two looked simply awesome! Way to see it through to the end. I'm proud of you.

What more can I add?  Sann, it's pretty clear that are coming out on top of all of your past difficulties...and I am so happy for you.  Stay strong

Laerka. That's a great race, but most important is the fact that you got out to run with Jo, had a great time at the race, and took away a great memory/attitude of the whole day!

Keep it up!

Awesome job Sann! Great race and an even better race report. Sometimes it's just about spending time with family and have fun rather than worrying about split times and hear rate

Thank you all for such kind words. It is great to have my bt friends who can understand what both the training and individual races can represent - pretty special.

Life is so strange .... that it can throw such wonderful moments in at the most unexpected times. Guess that is why we keep living it eh??
