So i'm looking for one more event to add. came across the pinehurst event. granted the course appears to be new for this year, what are people's take on this?

I know the area well as i went to grade school there and have swam in the marina before...(not competitively.. )

No, i'm not that competitive of an athlete this year in triathlons as i'm more into  "experience the distance" first. I feel this may be a great final tri challenge for me to hold me over til next year, when i come back and add close chase to my AG.

thoughts?

I'm also doin the OBX marathon in Nov, so i need some initiative to keep my enduro levels up and NOT get bored with running...

It was a fun race last year.  It was my second olympic distance ever (Over the Mountain the previous year).  My fitness was better last year than this year, as I had done White Lake half in the spring, and spent a lot of time on the bike last year.  I also was a strong runner during that portion of the year, so the run course was a lot of fun.

What was not fun was the fog we had to swim in.  Check out my race report for more details.

It's a pretty good challenge, but not too hard.  I think most of the hills are about like Triangle's course, more rollers, but not as steep?

If you want a good prep for OBX, sign up for the ATT 10-mile race October 24th.  Flat, fast, and world-class!  I had a blast on it in '08, signing up again in '09.

OR - do the Pinehurst Tri on 10/10, the ATT 10-miler on 10/24, and the OBX in Nov. That was my schedule last year and it went pretty well though I wasn't shooting for any records. Throwing in some swim and bike training breaks up the constant running grind. Enjoy what you're doing.

I did Pinehurst last year and thought it was a tough race, but that was more my fitness level and cooking myself on the bike than anything else. I loved the race site, the atmosphere, etc. and am planning on doing it again. Even the fog was kinda awesome. I'll post a pic of it- freaky to swim in but some good memories. Overall I would recommend the race- its one of the few OLY's around here and is a nice step up in challenge level from sprints.

I've done Pinehurst the last three years. It's a lovely course, all three legs, and a great race.

Last year was the first it was so foggy. That was an interesting swim. I ended up just following all the yellow caps and flying elbows in front of me. What else can you do? It worked!

The bike course is more crowded than Triangle was, for some reason. That's the only down side of this race, too many slow bikers in my way, lol! I'd agree with fgumps description, more rolling, less big hills than Triangle. Which I find harder, because none of the rollers are worthy of resting on the way down. Either way, not a difficult course, so you'll do fine.

I get lost every year on my way. Google maps directions just suck, so I always end up just driving around until I find cars with bikes on top to follow. Leave early so you have time for this!

Parking is a hike away from the spot. Plan gear bags so you can ride in. Also, someone told me there are burrs in the parking field that can give you a flat. Plan to carry your bike from car to road.

I'm not doing Pinehurst this year. Too close to B2B.

Oh come on Keyone, Pinehurst is a great little shakeout for B2B. Oh, and registration is up for the ATT 10-miler on www.insideoutsports.com - Event & Team Registration. NCRC is limiting it to 200 men and 200 women so sign up early.

I'm signed up for Pinehurst.  It will be my 2nd OLY.  I did my first this year as Kerr Lake.  I swam the mile faster that I had planned, but my strongest leg, the bike, I was slower..on slight rolling hills..go figure...then my weeakest leg, the run, I had to walk 4x for abot 30-45 seconds.  I bonked.  So I have been experimenting with different nutrition. My goal was to finish sub 3 and I did 2:57:41.  All said and done, Im gald I bit it off early and now have the experience of an OLY.

So what Im sayinmg Scottie, is go for it man..if you don't you'll wake up that morning, play with the dog, grab some coffee, read the paper and mid morning probably think to yourself..I could be rocking out with everyone else at Pinehurst!

If y'all don't stop hyping Pinehurst you're going to force me to go ahead and sign up. I don't want to risk missing it, but I usually start to burn out over the summer and miss a lot of training, so I'm reluctant to sign up too early.

LOL...peer pressure is the devil!  Signed up for the ATT 10 miler (yey for flatness!) and hopefully the lake swim tonight will persuade me that my awful swim Sunday was a fluke and I will be ok for an OLY

Well no turning back for me now. I just signed up for it. This will be my first olympic distance triathlon. Not sure what possessed me to do this.
If nothing else, it will have high entertainment value.

Will I need a wetsuit for this?

I am really considering, but would only have 5.5 weeks now to train for something that is four times as long as i have been swimming and in open water. I can get ready for the bike and run, but the swimming is... YIKES.
Going down on Saturday to check out the course.
