You may have to race in the rain.  So......perhaps you can get some experience riding in the rain, but do so in a safe location.

I'm in the Phoenix area too, and nearly bagged my 4-hour ride this morning because it was sprinkling in Tempe when I was getting the bike ready and the radar looked like it was going to rain all day. But I took a light, waterproof jacket and extra pair of socks with me, met a training buddy, and we set off. We were sprinkled on a few times, but it turned out that I didn't need the jacket (took it off within the first 4 miles of the ride) or socks. And it turned out to be a great training day (the wind added an extra training challenge).

If it had been raining cats and dogs at the start, we might have bagged the ride since Phoenix doesn't get a lot of rain to wash off oil, etc., from the roads, and they can get really slick when it first starts raining. I would also bag the ride with lightning or hail for obvious reasons.

I have no problem running or swimming in the rain as long as there are no storms, but I am still nervous about riding in the rain.  Anything more than light sprinkling and I bag the ride and switch to a run.

Survey Says....  Personal preference.  I do unless it's a legitimate safety issue.  Train like you fight and all that.

+1 on good to practice it once in a while. Hope for the best day, but train for the worst day.

My rule of thumb on weather: If you have to think twice, you already know the answer.

I don't like it, but I will - mostly because I get caught in it (like today).

I won't leave the house if it's raining, but I don't mind if the weather turns and I have to finish a ride in it.  I slow down and take it easy on the corners of course, and start my braking a lot sooner.

No, I personally think it's dangerous because cars can't see you as well. Also because it's cold and it sucks.

I'll either ride a mountain bike or inside.

Last year in the 5-6 weeks before IM, it rained each of my last four 100 mile rides sometimes for couple of hours sometimes most of the ride, you know when it rained all IM day I was ready.

I don't like cleaning my bike after riding in rain but I do.

Cyclocross racing in the rain is the absolute best...get dirty and muddy and ride through puddles...cross racing in the snow is fun too.

I've ridden in the rain on occasion.  It's not terribly fun.  But I picked up my trainer this week, so the only way I will ride in the rain again is if I accidentally get caught in it or if it rains at a race.  Otherwise, it's the trainer.

so you guys aren't getting more than usual this year?

I think it's definitely wetter than normal this summer but we've been in a multi-year drought so this weather is more normal that what we've had during the past four summers or so. I've only had to water my grass twice this summer which is definitely on the low side.

Yes, I've even had to race in the rain. Not a fan of it, but I'll do it if I'm really due for a ride. Right now I prefer to be on the bike every three days at least.

I am in the SoCal high desert so we don't get much rain.  Yesterday was my long ride of the week so I got up stretched, dressed, had my gel, and was ready to go.  Got outside and found it was raining lightly.  I almost turned back but went ahead and powered on.  Glad I did as it was a good ride till the way back, headwind all the way, built some character there.  The only thing that sucks is my fav jersey (white in the back) is pretty much ruined with dirt, grime, etc.  Ah well, it was still fun.

I just got home from a rainy ride.  I never set out in the rain, but if it starts while I'm out, I don't turn back.

I hate the bike clean-up afterwards though.

Start a ride in the rain - NOContinue if the rain comes - YESI've raced in the rain so it helps to be prepared. I just can't bring myself to start a ride (or a run for that matter) in the rain...

I'll ride in light rain but will head for home or not start out if it starts to pour.

I've ridden several 40-50 mile rides in a down pour before, and many shorter ones.  Water proof pants seemed to be the ticket, since it isn't that hot in Vermont where I did that.

Granted, this was before I had an indoor trainer...

The worst part about it is when your shoes get completely filled with water, and the fact that you have to detail your bike afterwards...

I've had at least 10 races where all it did was rain.  If nothing else training in the rain is a mental workout.

I used to...

After waking up with EMTs standing over me, I'll try to avoid it in the future.  Metal and paint are both pretty slick when wet, and I'm slowly realizing I'm not immortal or invicible.

I think it's important to do some riding in the rain if the opportunity presents, just so you don't find yourself riding in the rain for the first time during a race.  But I will be doing any wet rides much more conservatively than I did in the past.

The bike cleanup sucks.  Both from riding in the rain... or like me, sending your father back to the crash cite to collect bike parts.

I do.  I find it really sharpens your senses.  It makes me very vigilant about my every move, and those of others, so it's a good refresher on how to be smooth on the bike.

Plus, it washes the sweat off the bike.Tongue out

I ride in the rain as long as it's not cold.  I'll even go out if it looks like it's going to T-Storm.   I just use caution going through turns.  Other than that I actually like it.  But I'm not playing with a full deck either!

bzgl40 - 2009-08-22 2:41 PM I live in the PNW and my first century of the season is in May.  So yes, I ride in the rain and way more then I ever want to, plus snow, haile, and whatever else nature throws at us.  Thankfully we rarely get lightening.  Once that century is out of the way and it starts to get nice though it takes a lot to get me out in the rain.  Near everyone I bike with out here has two bikes, their rain bike and their nice bike.  Sadly I have just the one...

X2... except the just having one bike bit.
