Rose Hulman, heh? I was that close to choosing that school for its aero program, but then I remembered that it was an all-dude school (in hindsight it really didn't matter, seems there's a "Rule 3" that all hot chicks live by or somethin'...). I woulda been a year behind ya. Great school and reputation. |

Being a woman in engineering: The odds are good...but the goods are odd! Yea...well...I recall getting a college brochure from Washington & Lee University in Virginia (an all-male school) and thinking "No way I'll ever go to an all male school..." a short time later, I'm sending in my matriculation fees for Rose. Rose-Hulman was all-male (undergraduate) at the time I went there. There were a few female grad students and one of them was my lab partner once or twice. At the time, there was one phone per floor (in-room phones were available, but expensive) and everyone was expected to answer the phone and go see if the person being called was in his room. She called, asked for me, and told the guy she was my lab partner. Yea...right..."Mike, your lab partner is on the phone (snicker, snicker)..." It has since gone co-ed. I just looked, and 92 of the 468 freshmen are women (20%). Relatively high by engineering/science/math standards, but they are fielding women's sports teams and you gotta have enough women to have the team...(I don't have a problem with this, it just helps explain why Rose has a higher percentage of women than the engineering school at Purdue for example). I met my wife while I was at Rose when she fell in love with my roommate. |

I worked as a "peer tutor" one semester where people could come into the Student Center and get tutoring free assistance. Working in, or near, the level of classes that I was taking, math-wise, was easy. Hardest thing I had to do was try to explain the mathematical concept of gravity to a student from Physics for Poets who didn't have a grasp of derivative calculus. I scanned the first part, then read this whole thread hoping someone would explain that... and this is all I get degrees in language, journalism, and business management... and now I'll get out of your thread /hijack off/ A limit is a way of expressing the behavior of a function. In a traditional sense it would be written. lim of f(x) as x->c = L. So f(x) gets closer to equaling L as X gets closer to c. So the joke is... as your GPA in you major of engineering gets closer to zero your major gets closer to business. The rest is left as an exercise to the reader... Hardest thing I had to do was try to explain the mathematical concept of gravity to a student from Physics for Poets who didn't have a grasp of derivative calculus. Funny you mention, I was just about to start a thread celebrating that I JUST found what the f#$% "sine" and "cosine" are actually used for. All I remember learning about them in high school math is "here's some triangles, if you divide this by that you get the sine and if you do it the other way you get the cosine, here's how to make a neat graph on your calculator, know this stuff 'cause it'll be on the test." I would have been a LOT more interested if anyone had pointed out "By the way, you can use this to figure out stuff about vibration and sound waves." Only NOW, at age 26, in grad school and learning about acoustics for a master's in speech-language pathology, has this come up. |

My favorite part is that all new jobs want ou to have a PE, and I need at least another year of work experience before I can take the test. if you get stuck in this situ for long, you may consider finding a school to do an MS. at many schools you can get GRA funding (some source of income) to do your MS. it may take a year and a half to two years, but then you get one year of credit towards your professional experience for PE. then you can sit for your PE and get those jobs. better than having no income and not getting more experience for PE. |

Now that the base is closed, apparently they turned it into a high end housing community. Funny story: I have a fraternity brother that went to Nuke Power School. He was interviewed by Rickover (I hope I spelled that right). During the interview, Rickover did not like one of his answers and had him stand in the closet to think about what he said. Needless to say Rickover did not accpet him. Turns out he was accepting hardly anyone, so they went over the candidates again and my brother got in. He served quite sometime and is now a civilian. |
