Did anyone do this one this year?  I understand the course changed to downtown Birmingham.  Wondering if I could get some input.  On the radar for kicking off the 2010 season.

I am interested in the response(s) as well I have heard great feedback about it over the years. (I actually officiated the 2007 race.) The same race management company that puts on the Chattanooga Oly puts on this event.

Perhaps we can get a good sized BT brew to drive over, stay at the same hotel together?

This is for Whistle Stop.  Is that the same race or course?

They changed the course this year to downtown.  I am going to approach the RD with the concerns and see what I get back.  I wil post the results.

I talked to the RD today.  He indicated the city did not give them all that they wanted last year and they did the best they could with the road closings that the city was willing to do.  I completely understand their challenges.  They now have economic impact numbers and are working with the city to "improve" or change the course.  There is not guarantees it will change.  He is going to stay in touch with me and give me the updates.  They are starting the talks with the city this week and hope to have the logistics worked out shortly.

I am going to wait to sign up until I get more information, but I am not giving up on going.  More to follow.

Well, first off, Team Magic typically puts on a quality race and is a first rate race organization that is well thought of in the triathlon community. For example, they do the highly successful Chattanooga Oly that is a regional favorite.

That said, David is a pretty seasoned athlete who is the furthest thing from a whiner.  He is also an accomplished rider who could ride a trike up Bull Mountain and not complain ... that said, if he says that the race course is both dangerously laid out with the roads in disrepair then that is enough for me.

I too am hoping that they come up with a better course design on smoother roads.  Birmingham would be a great place for a race and Team Magic knows how to put them on.

Maybe Jim Rainey at Georgia Multisports will make it easier for us by putting on a turn of the season duathlon near Atlanta?

Easy...they are trying to make some changes and the old venue had a long tradition.  So, it could end up being fine.  I do not want to kill the race.  They have to make some changes, but let's give them a chance.

It was downtown and a fantastic course.  The bike course ran about 15 miles out of town and back and was three loops.  The road leading out of town was rough, but maybe they will repave by next year.  The also hosted a downtown Crit. race so it was fun to finish and watch the pros race around downtown.  If you have kids they have the Power Kids duathlon on Saturday.  Lots of fun.  Great race and I will be going back in 2010.

Hey Damon ... good to see you here.  Hopefully they will rectify the problems with the course lay-out as I like the idea of being able to kick-off the season with a du and that they have a kids race.  That said, the feedback is that there is significant room for improvement - which might just open the door for a season-opening duathlon in the Atlanta area.

Hey Brian!!!  There is some room for improvement for sure, but they put on a good show but I would love Jim R. to put a DU here in Atlanta.

It is very much on Jim's radar, but dealing with the city and finding the right venue is his biggest challenge. I think he will make it happen sooner than later

So ... let's help him out.  Where would we like a duathlon to be and what type of course? Flat and fast vs. rolling and technical vs. hills?

A thought would be to have it at or near Vogel State park, have Three Gap as the bike course and then a trail run ...
