Pre-race routine:

Left work at 4:30 and then drove to Chatfield. Got there in plenty of time. Changed into tri suit at gas station picked up granola bar. Saw Stacie at the registeration table and then ran into Alpine (Brett) and Mark. Fellow Bters. Don't understand but had pre-race jitters.
Event warmup:

Swam a couple of 100 m just to get the kinks out. Haven't swam in OW all season.

Comments:

It felt like I was swimming alone oh wait - I WAS!!!! By far my worse swim ever in OW. I was slow, slow, slow. Time is unofficial but I knew when I was swimming that I was in granny gear the entire time. I had some trouble sighting but really I started off slow and kept up that pace. It was my first OW swim this year and I just wasn't in a groove. I was like one of the last people in the water and it felt I was just out on a training swim. I didn't really see it as a race.
Also it was my first time swimming 1500 m in OW. So I was really conservative on the first loop. I don't know why I didn't think I could finish or something but I was just gingerly going at a lesiurely pace. It also didn't help that most people thought the course was longer than 1500 m. But the race organizer said he measured it correctly.
What would you do differently?:

GO OUT HARDER! Leave it all out on the course. Not be so timid. Remember that I'm in a race not at a Sunday morning picnic. Also it didn't help that the male winner of the long course race was coming through the finish line just as I was starting the run! Damn Air Force Academy triathletes! :) I always see him at races. He's always first and I'm always last. Oh well.

Comments:

Felt really wobbly after getting out. Could hardly stand up. Got a HORRIBLE calf cramp while putting on my socks and shoes. Hurt like hell. But got out of my wetsuit pretty fast. I did forget to drink my Gatorade though. Pretty much got no nutrition during the race. But it was a short race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Pretty good transition.
Run
  • 40m 30s
  • 3.2 miles

Comments:

Weird but this was the best part of the race. RAN THE ENTIRE 5K and even sprinted at the end. I had to have had a good time because I finished at 1:22, which was about 40 min after I got to T1. My 5K's in multisport races are usually in the 50s. Never in the 40s. I'll have to wait and see the offical time. Felt lonely out there. I was DFL, for sure. Calf hurt like heck and then hamstring started to twinge. But when I got to the turnaround I picked up speed. I know I had a hell of a negative split. I just picked it up. The race director rode a bike while I ran helping me bring up the rear and Brett and Stacie were so cool they ran out to come and get me. It was awesome. And I finished with Brett yelling at me to keep up. Thanks guys, couldn't have done it without you guys. The best thing about this is that it felt GOOD to run. It really felt like I was racing and I was running.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. I was proud I picked it up at the turnaround and I ran it the whole way.

Warm down:

Nothing.

Event comments:

This is a great race. I would definitely do it again. Also there was a lot of swag. Whooo. And plus I won a free gift. Even though I didn't do so well. It was still a great race. Mike Ricci really puts on a good time.

Great race O! Don't worry about your swim so much. I know what you are capable of and it must have been some sort of solar-flare induce anomaly or something Go do some more OW swimming and you'll be in the swing of things in no time at all.
