What's the recommendation on pursuing the training plan after a mild injury?

Here's the scoop:

I have a mild back strain in the middle of my back. It was not workout related, but it DOES impact my ability to sit for more than a few minutes at a time, and I cannot do the trainer workouts at present. I was right on target with Jorge's plan, but now, I'm clearly derailed. It's not SO bad that I'm out for weeks, but I'm thinking a week would be good to relax and heal up. Problem is that the injury occurred after Week 7, Q1. So, do I start back up with Week 7, Q2, or should I back up a bit and re-do a few weeks to get back into the swing when I start up again? I'm definitely going to drop back to my first power level and work up again.

What's the conventional wisdom for restarting after a short interruption?

JorgeM - 2009-12-20 12:21 PM week # 8 is up!

http://jorgepbmcoaching.blogspot.com/

Thanks Jorge!  These workouts have been great so far!  I noticed a big difference when I changed from RPE to measuring power (even if it is a Super Nintendo Computrainer )  I am sure they are going to pay off come spring/summer!

I have printed out Week 8 and read through it...  Now my question is, "Why does Jorge hate me?"   I see pain in my future...

I have a quick question. I don't have a power meter so I train by heart rate. For the last week or so, my trainer seems easier then it used to. I'd like to think I'm getting stronger since I'm pushing much heavier gears on the bike, but I have a feeling it's the trainer! Should I change the trainer settings to make it a big harder? Or, will this mess up my heart rate zones and testing? I just finished week 5, day 1.

W8 Q1 done...  A lot of weakness left my body...  there was some pain...  I could barely hold on to my watts in the 4th interval, the 5th was misery and the 6th, well, it was something special

Thanks Jorge!

I'm not doing the Cycling Plan because Jorge is my coach but I had to respond to the "Jorge is trying to kill me" comments.

I AGREE!!!  I think the workout he had me do last night qualified as Human Rights Abuse.  My dog even felt bad for me once I got off the trainer.

Why do I have the feeling it will get worse before it gets better?

I felt the same way on Week 8 Q1 on Tuesday, especially on the 5th and 6th interval.  Definitely pushing my fitness forward with that workout.

I watched the DVRd version of Kona 09 while running on the treadmill, but while doing these bike workouts I can do nothing but listen to music, no focus for watching anything.

Just finished Week 6, Q2 and I have to say THANK YOU, JORGE

Strictly from a Strength standpoint -- both physical Muscular Leg Strength and Mental Strength -- I think I've advanced further in these past 6 weeks than I have at any point in my past two years of cycling.  I  cannot wait to translate this Strength and Power into endurance once I can begin riding outside again in three months or so.  My legs have never felt this strong and capable, on the bike atleast.

Due to holiday travel schedules, etc.  I had to hit Week 8 Q2 tonight, which was a day early...  It was just as hard as yesterday, deceptive on the schedule, but trust me, that last 4' hard interval was a beat down!

I am 1 week behind the actual plan and I did for the 3rd time the testing protocol
1) 8 weeks ago
2) 4 weeks ago
3) this week

I am 35 years old, 68Kg, solid runner and quite fair at swimming and cycling. Here are my improvements over the last 8 weeks following this (great!) plan:

8 weeks ago: 5mins-262W, 20mins-208W
4 weeks ago: 5mins-262W, 20mins-234W (12.5% better on the 20mins)
now: 5mins-287W (+9.5%), 20mins-256W (+9.5% vs. previous, +23.5% vs. 8weeks)

I have an FTP now of 246W, 3.61W/kg, while I am at 3.76W/kg on 20mins and 4.22W/kg on 5mins.
For Coggan book I am just in the Good rating and I am very happy with that.

I think Jorge is providing us an amazing plan which should be taken as an excellent free and valid resource for all here.
I thank you Jorge! and I will keep following you for the next weeks, testing in another 4 weeks time and see...of course, things start to be more and more challanging here because training zones are higher even if I improved...

This is really what I was searching for!

Thanks Plissken74 for sharing your numbers

I saw similar results

I went from 5 min(263), 20min(225), FTP(212) 8 weeks ago
to 5min(261), 20min(248), FTP(243)

That's a 14% improvement on the FTP and the price is right: a few gallons of sweat.

I also noticed that at a given power level, my HR is lower than it was 8 weeks ago, showing it's less effort to maintain a given power level

I still feel my bike is weak compared to other numbers I have seen thrown around, but I finally feal I am making progress

Thanks Jorge

You're just as mean as Jorge.  You must be taking notes.  And btw, I don't need some silly dog to feel sorry for me cause I feel sorry for myself everytime I get on and off the trainer!

Glad everyone else is suffering and enjoying this. I posted this in my training log and thought I would share it:

"Funny, I looked at this workout (Jorge Wk 8 Q2) and thought it looked easy- only 3X4 mins. OK, so each one is meant to be at 110% LTHR but its only 3 of them so how hard can it be? Well, I was dead wrong! I was panting like a dog after the third one."

Finally with this amazing plan, I can feel on the bike the same pain I have been feeling training running on tracks with Intervals up to death for several years...
