My monthly cost $160/month not including annual association dues. I enjoy training (I'd rather train than race) but is this the norm? Monthly: gyms 85 swim 45 tri group 30 |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: How much $$ do you spend on training I spend very little on training apart from buying shoes, maintaining my bike, etc. Tri club: $25/year Running club: $15/year Gym: $0 Coaching: $0 ETA: I plan on spending $35 - $80 on being a BT performance member for a year. Still haven't decided if I want the silver or bronze one. Edited by Artemis 2009-11-23 3:02 PM |

Extreme Veteran 1942 In front of computer when typing this. | Subject: RE: How much $$ do you spend on training $7/month so I can shower at work. $1/swim at the ghetto pool down the road from work. Then nutrition costs for longer workouts. Shoes, tires, bike maintenance, etc. but I don't think you want to quantify that. I don't belong to a gym- have a treadmill and bike trainer at home if I need it. Otherwise I just run/bike outside. Those $1 swims are awesome :-) However, every penny I save from not belonging to a gym and using the ghetto pool goes towards little alien creatures, stuffed animals, legos, etc. for my seedlings. |

Monthly: gyms 85 swim 45 tri group 30 My gym and swim is similar, but no tri group. I won't have any major purchases next year so I'll budget $50 a month ($600 per year) for general stuff and race entry fees. I also budget for four pairs of shoes a year at about $100 each. Brian |

Pro 4578 Vancouver, BC | Subject: RE: How much $$ do you spend on training Hmm, I don't really want to add it up. Swim club: $50/year & $50/month * 8 months = $450 Track membership & training/racing pass = $550 Bike maintenance stuff ~ $50/year? Gas to races = not sure Non-sponsored clothing (like gloves & glasses) ~ $50/year Luckily, I don't pay race fees, nutrition while training & racing, hotel for out of town races and that sort of thing. And also I didn't include the big ticket items, like a bike, because I've got that now, but these things were certainly a big expense one year. So I'm at $1100 year, just for maintaining my lifestyle. Hopefully nothing big comes up. ETA: I'm sure there is a ton of stuff that I forgot. Edited by jeng 2009-11-23 4:17 PM |

Expert 1116 Thornton, CO | Subject: RE: How much $$ do you spend on training It's hard to quantify everything, but here's some of the more common things that wear out and need more replacing than others. gym/pool - $29/month tires - $240/year (two sets) = $20/month tubes - $5/each (say an average of 2 flats/month?) = $10/month running shoes - ~4 pairs/year @ ~$100/each = ~$35/month cycling gloves - 2 pairs/year @ $35 = $6/month so that "basics" adds up to about $100/month for me. But that lacks a lot of other things. Nutrition (from supplements to daily food to shot blocks) , clothing (from socks to shorts to shirts/jerseys), extra deodorant, body glide, gas getting to/from training groups and the gym, water/gas costs from the extra showers I have to take, chain lube/bike maintenance products, recovery beers with the running/cycling groups, bar tape for the bike each year or two, 4x more razors than normal to shave the legs. But then some things save a little money too, like riding the bike to work during the nicer days. All in all, I'd say it probably comes out to closer to $300/month for me without me realizing it. |

Just a question because I saw you post something in another thread about tubes: do you ride exclusively on Broken Glass Drive or something? I have no idea your regular weekly/monthly mileage--looks like between 100-140 or so if your logs are accurate--but that seems like A LOT of flats...I've ridden more than 1400 outdoor miles since April and have had just one flat. Is it possible you don't check tire pressure before rides or maybe don't pump them up enough or something? It just sounds like you experience WAY more flats than I'd expect for that kind of mileage--unless, of course, you DO ride on Broken Glass Drive every day . |

Champion 7547 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: How much $$ do you spend on training I'd say I'm probably "abnormal" and I'm sure my wife would agree. Swim: $1.50 per swim (average twice a week) so about $150 per year for the pool. A poly swimsuit ($25) and goggles ($12) per year and I'm still << $200 per year. Bike: I figure a bike tune-up ($60) per year plus a set of tires/tubes ($60, yea, pretty inexpensive tires) and a jersey, shorts, and pair of gloves (about $75 for all 3). I have a trainer. Figure $200 per year. Run: I'm going through more shoes this year. I've been lucky to find and be OK with clearance shoes of various brands. Latest pair were $35 (a splurge from the $30 I've previously paid) and I usually retire them after 300 miles so cost per mile is about $0.12. For the 1000 miles that's $120. I figure a new pair of running shorts per year $15 and maybe a pair of sweatpants ($30) and I come up to $165 for the year. I got a bunch of tech-T's a couple years ago for $5 apiece so I don't need to buy new shirts for quite a while. Nutrition: I'll just count the nutrition-during-training which is maybe a case of gels ($25), a $20 package of sports-drink powder, and maybe $50 for powerbars, bananas, Payday's, Clif bars, Lara Bars, breakfast bars, granola bars, etc. BT membership ($65ish for Silver) plus $25 for the local tri-club and $25 for the running club. No magazine subscriptions. $800 per year? |

It just sounds like you experience WAY more flats than I'd expect for that kind of mileage--unless, of course, you DO ride on Broken Glass Drive every day . I attach the pump everyday I ride. I rarely get blowouts. I've only had two flats during a ride where I had to change it out on the side of the road. I just recently started using the BT logs and they are accurate (Right now my mileage on the bike is lacking because of the winter, but from March until October I average 100-150miles/week). Most of my flats are discovered the next day when I come downstairs and find the tire either flat or at like 40psi. The bike is always kept in the house in the living room. I don't live in Glassville, but I do live in Thornton. ;-) I get a lot of slow pinhole leaks, never in the same place within the tire or anything. I do occasionally pull thorns out, so I figure I must snag a few that puncture enough but don't stay embedded. Maybe one day I'll suck it up and go with a Mr. Tuffy.. but I have a mental block on putting added weight on the outside of a rotating wheel when I'm often trying to keep up with friends going up mountains. ETA: I've only had two flats during a ride in the past year... Edited by zionvier 2009-11-23 5:27 PM |

Expert 1123 Columbus | Subject: RE: How much $$ do you spend on training good question: i have no gym membership but i have contemplated getting one i train in $85 shoes that I go through in about 5 months (though half have been free b/c of race prizes) i train on the same bike I use to race so that depends on how you slice training/competing money i use the public pool and state park in the summer - no cost. i use the city pool (50¢ a shot) and occasionally a suburb pool on rare occasion (a few bucks per visit) clothing - shorts and tights had costs but it was a while ago, shirts are free, socks ~$5/pr x 10 new per year, warm clothing - i paid $20 for a close out jacket last year. i have no bike trainer most training can be done pretty cheap. shoes and socks are my biggest cost >$150/year the rest is just stuff I have if i do a pool membership costs will be $300 per year. time is a bigger cost. weekends i spent time training (weekdays it is transportation mileage on the bike and run) the swimming doesn't get done because i don't have the time to spend. |

Expert 1053 Culpeper, VA | Subject: RE: How much $$ do you spend on training Gold's Gym: $60 month (wife and I) Freedom Aquatics: $8/per swim (once a week presently) No other clubs... I don't spend lots on the sport and hate paying $8 each time I want to swim. My other costs are similar to othesr with respect to shoes, etc. I do get mine for less than most though, generally from clearance at runningwarehouse.com with 15% off... Brooks neutral shoes of some sort. |

New user 219 | Subject: RE: How much $$ do you spend on training similar to others with gym and pool membership and basic bike maintenance. But I spend a lot of money on clothes, and that is even with sales and last year's styles and discount stores. I have more exercise clothing than regular clothing. Dh had to talk me down from buying more spandex at Dick's Sporting Goods today. I probably spend $600 a year alone on sneakers. |

Expert 763 Behind you | Subject: RE: How much $$ do you spend on training Gym: bought yard sale/craigslist items cheap, so no gym fees here. $0 Bike tune up: I do a website for the LBS, so all tune ups and gear all I want. $0 Clothes: I resell my old tri stuff on ebay and buy new stuff for the same price. $0 Swim: Local hotels. I simply ask them for a membership and they say they don't have one, but they let me swim there as much as I want, which is a lot in the winter, the lake if summer. $0 Shoes: Local shoe store takes "nike/adidas" trade ins at $10/shoes, regardless of condition, so each summer I go to yard sales and buy my normal stuff and ask them to throw in some shoes, they always say yes, therefore I take them to the local shoe store and get a free pair, last one was Asics 2120's, which I had credit of $220.00 So I bought a few pair of them. $0 Debt free and loving it. |

You just go to a local hotel to swim? Have you gotten in any trouble from that? Have you had any difficulty getting in anywhere (e.g. room key requirement)? |

New user 30 | Subject: RE: How much $$ do you spend on training At the current point in time I spend about $5.00 (Australian dollars) per swim session - about 3 per week, though I am looking at upping that (we're heading into summer). All run and bike sessions are free - it's Australia even in winter you can still do sessions outside with a minimum amount of fuss and a couple of extra layers and in summer you get up at some undecently early hour to beat the heat and the sun. For my budget bike maintenance and other equipment expenses are separate to my training expenses. They actually come under the same heading as entry costs, accomodation etc. |
