3 Disciplines Racking
78F / 26C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 38m
Overall Rank = 43/125
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 10/26
Pre-race routine:

Woke 4AM, on the road by 4:30. Sucked down 2 gatorades (40oz), a diet pepsi, and a McDonald's bacon, egg, cheese bagel. Arrived at transition in time to rack my bike really close to the bike exit...a good thing, since I was going to have to run in my road cleats...

The hardest part of pre race was getting past the Oriental Health Spa at exit 147, and the Velvet Touch, exit 129, without stopping and demanding change for a $50 :) After all, mid-Michigan IS noted for it's asian culture and high-class establishments :)
Event warmup:

Did a quick swim to test out BRAND NEW goggles (nice thinking) and a quick ride (2 mi). Then, BS'ed with Gary, Greg, Trix, Dana, Charles and slipped in the goose shit on the way down to the water.

Swim
  • 26m 5s
  • 1500 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

First 400 yds forgot to exhale while swimming...so I caught myself exhaling AND inhaling with each breath...and ran out of oxygen. Had to stop after 400, tread water for 30 sec, then kicked for a little bit, then finally got back at it...this time exhaling underwater. Got back int the groove quickly.

Also, there was one swimmer, roughly the same speed, playing bumper cars. Wherever I went, this dude was pushing me one direction or the other. Finally decided to stay 10yds from the buoys and give him space, which cost me time, but got rid of the a-hole factor.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to exhale in the water. Rip that guys goggles off and stay closer to the buoys.
Transition 1
  • 03m 13s
Comments:

T1 was just as expected. Fine, except for the wrestling match with the wetsuit. It was kind of a long T1...run up a hill, around some fencing, down the length of transition, into transition, back the length of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to be faster??? Cut my wetsuit off with a boxcutter?
Bike
  • 1h 13m 20s
  • 25.2 miles
  • 20.62 mile/hr
Comments:

No issues. 21 mph avg, felt good but HR was slightly elevated, so I shut it down over the last 5 to (in theory) save something for the run. Took the opportunity to drink / gel while rolling, rather than in transition. Brought overall avg down to about 19.8.

Also...The timing for the ride and T2 were fouled up. I assume a 1:30 min T2, leaving 1:13:20 left for the ride. Went back and computed what I WOULD have been in the AG / Overall placings.
What would you do differently?:

Train more...
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Good transition. No issues. Again, time for ride and T2 were combined, so the 2:00 is an estimate...
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Smoov.
Run
  • 53m 55s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was a BEAR! Very hilly. Ran 8's for 5 mi, then was completely out of juice for mile 6...took 14:28 for mile 6...hamstring cramps required stretching every 150 yds...that's about all I could get before I had to stretch again...
What would you do differently?:

Train in a frigging kiln next time. It was damned hot. More bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

Dana brought me life-saving gatorade. Grabbed two cold towels and worked on my sunburn...walked around with Lisa / Dana...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bricks, volume of work, lack of training in the heat.

Event comments:

Good race, overall. Small enough that it wasn't too goofy, but it had some big-race amenities...beer, TONS of munchies (fruit, oreos, pizza, gatorade, everything else you could think of).

Courses were well marked, volunteers everywhere...no chance to get lost. The one aid station on the run ran out of cups for a period of time...

HEY SPEEDSTER!!!

Hmm...our times are pretty similar actually.....EXCEPT that your swim kicked my ass and my run was better.  Our T1, bike and T2 times were about the same

Good times yesterday Rick!  You're such a fun person to hang out with....thanks for all the jokes

I think the box cutter solution for T1 is kinda expensive....but be cheaper to hire a wetsuit stripper

Ewww goose shit! Great race Rick - I understand there is a great video called TI that could help you with your swimming technique! Still a very respectable overall swim split, having to reposition yourself and re-teach yourself at the last moment how to breathe!

Your last mile on the run sounded painful, but the first 5 in the hills were very nice!

Welcome back after the 3 years being away, and thanks for posting pics in your album! Looks like you guys had a great time!

Way to be Rick!  Great race!  I would have loved to know what was going through your mind when playing swim bumper cars.  LOL!  That bike pace rocked.  20+ on a rolling course impressive.  Great showing overall and in AG.  Congrats!

Sweet race Rick!  You really kicked ass on the bike my man!!  Take a spear gun with you next time on the swim for buttheads like the bumper car guy.  I've heard it works wonders!  Congrats on getting back into it after 3 years...you rocked.

Dang, Rick. You're fast. No old guy qualifiers needed. Just fast!

By the way, I hate geese. The little f***ers have overrun Ft. Collins and goose shit abounds. Join me and we shall rid the world of geese. Bwaaaaaaahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy crapola, I had no idea how fast you were.  I'm blown away that you posted a 54 min 10k at the end of a tri where you basically walked the last mile.  Unreal.  Great race, Rick.  Simply awesome.
