Subject: What's in your blender?
As part of my new year's resolution, I plan on nailing my diet.  I'm not bad (33 yrs old, 6", 165lbs, low teens in body fat), but man... I go deaf when it comes to learning about nutrition! So, to those that this thread applies, I'm curious about what goes into your blender. Here's mine:

(1) One scoop of whey protein, 3/4 strawberries, one banana, & 2/3 cups of skim milk, or

(2) One scoop of whey protein, 3/4 strawberries, one banana, 1/2 cups of skim milk, & a full serving of yogurt.

P.s. Please feel free to critique (I also weight train 2/3 times a week).

Every morning (after my workout):
~2 cups spinach (you honestly don't taste it) + rice/pea protein powder + banana + mixed frozen fruit + 1 tbsp flax

Awesome! I was going to fix my OP & say, "your MORNING blender" but then realized that you might have been referring to your morning blender to begin with.

Yeah see. I "brought" the protien-centered shake concept from my weight training days & am now wondering if it's not working w/endurance sports taking center stage. I don't know, I do like to maintain good muscle mass & I don't think (but what do I know?!) that it affects my endurance.

No shake here. Real food, a balanced diet. What are you looking to get from a shake that you don't get elsewhere?

Sometimes I throw an orange in there.

x2.
I eat mostly whole foods.  I haven't done shakes since I stopped weight training exclusively 2 1/2 years ago.

the bear - 2010-01-21 12:03 PM No shake here. Real food, a balanced diet. What are you looking to get from a shake that you don't get elsewhere?

convenience. Easy to eat on the road. Easy to switch up so you don't get tired of eating the same thing.

How is a shake not "real food" or part of a "balanced diet"?...

Yeah. I'm on the same boat as far as convenience is concerned. Of course I wish I could sit down & consume "real" food but I just don't have the time.

As clarification, the shake is POST-workout.

Really!? I'm assuming that's a compliment Laughing.

As a compliment to my "nail my diet" NY's resolution, I'd also like to pump out quality races this year (ie, PRs I can brag about on BT). So, while also wanting to maintain "aesthetic muscle", my "concern" is striking that balance... like what to eat after mY bi/tri-weekly 13 mile runs and weekly long run.

Classic.  I am sort of wanting a Margarita right now.

I'm sort of lazy most times and throw in a EAS Myoplex packet in there nowadays and it tastes decent enough.  I used to get a little creative but then I figured if I was going to be mixing all these ingredients, I could just cook myself some eggs and toast or something in the same amount of time post workout.

I've been in this trap lately where I've been downing banana chocolate vivanno smoothies from starbucks after my morning runs since I never seem to have time to really eat a real breakfast and the group I run with parks at a starbucks every morning.  I happen to like a nice shake after a workout sometimes as opposed to eating real food for some reason.

I buy my margherita's already made!!!!

I save my blender for Metabolol Endurance w/glutamine for those days that endurance workout lasts longer than 1 hour.   Mix with water or juice!   Mmmmmmm

Maybe not a compliment, but definitely not meant to be derogatory. If anything I would say envy would be most appropriate. At 6'2" Im just praying that training for triathlons will someday get me back under 200lbs.

There was a pretty cool thread on ST recently where folks posted thier before/after fotos. Astonishing! (I wonder if it's been done here.) Point is, I'm sure the tri life WILL make the difference. I'm far from a pro (handfull of marathons, one IM), but I always encourage people to not to do too much too soon... allow some time to "discover" the endorphine high. That way, you become addicted to endurance sports so that it's no longer a chore but a necesity.
