Sunny
Total Time = 1h 16m 35s
Overall Rank = 94/438
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 13/37
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4am, packed up and drove 2 hours to the race site. Got there at 6:30, set up, ate a Cliff Bar, and got ready for the swim.

Ran in to 3-4 other BT'rs (Tom, Crispin, Bethany, and JamesReeves).
Event warmup:

Swam about 200 yards. The lakebottom was MUCK.
Swim
  • 12m 28s
  • 600 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

This included a pretty long run up a hill once out of the water, which accounts for the slow time.

I didn't get passed by anyone once in the water, but did pass quite a few folks. It was a "rough" swim, lots of thrashing and jockeying for position at the start. I actually like the rough and tumble, since I'm very confident in the water. I find that when I bump into people, they wind up slowing down and allow me to pass.
What would you do differently?:

I'd love to be the first out of the water one day, but I don't think that will ever happen. The fastest time was just over 10:41.
Transition 1
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

T1 went smoothly.
Bike
  • 36m 51s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 20.19 mile/hr
Comments:

Decent bike. I was passed by 4 riders in my AG. Another must have snuck out of T1 ahead of me.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

There was no time recorded for T2! So, I had to fudge it based upon the race results. I think T2 was buried in as part of the bike leg. I approximated T2 and made sure that all the time splits added up to match the total of 1:16:35.
Run
  • 25m
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was hilly, much like the bike. But, it was a blast to run this sprint race after doing so many long distance tri's this season. The weather was perfect and it was fun to finish.

I am pleased with my AG placement and my overall placement.
Post race
Warm down:

Drove 2 hours back home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My own tolerance for pain.

Great race. Hope my times next Sunday are this good. I am going to set new goals based on your times - not that I'm going to beat them, but it is a higher set of times. Congratulations.

Good job Karl...hope you had a good time....Don't you hate it when include this monster run in your swim time????  That always sucks.  I usually hit my watch coming out of the water so I know what my real swim time is...I already know I suck at running ....Have a great weekend and congratualtions -SMO

Sprints can be a lot of fun - no pressure, no stress, and you can really hammer the bike and not worry too much about the run. Great job all around. It must be nice to be strong in all 3 sports!

Nice work Karl!  That's some serious speed.  And I bet it was VERY COOL to finally run a tri where you weren't worried about fitness level or nutrition plan, it was just how fast you could go. I'd bet that was fun!

And I always wondered who the guy was behaving like a bumper car at the swim starts and rounding buoys...

You are FAST, Karl!  Great race!

Nice race Karl!  Bet it felt weird only racing for a very fast 1h 16min after those HIM's.  You sure can ride that bike of your and you ran like a deer.

Way to go bro!
