Arbor Schools

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 16m 38s
Overall Rank = 161/837
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 3/53
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5am. Granola w/soy milk plus coffee and Advil. Arrived at race right about the time transition opened. First one on my transition rack = space at the end. Nice!
Event warmup:

Ran about 10 minutes after I set up transition. Swam for a few minutes just to get my face used to the water (cold!).
Swim
  • 06m 21s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started at the front of my wave, caught an earlier wave after the 1st buoy. Got some good practice with swimming on/being swum on by other people. A little crowded.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster!!! My time was not very good compared to others I know... That said, I tend to do better the longer the swim is (can hold on to my pace well).
Transition 1
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

Mud-fest in transition, but did OK. Had a really hard time clipping into my pedals... might have been due to mud? Felt like it took FOREVER!!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, other than not enter a mudfest race, but who knew?!
Bike
  • 46m 23s
  • 15 miles
  • 19.40 mile/hr
Comments:

Tried to work this. What was sort-of fun was actually passing people -- in my last tri it was a mass start and I spent the next 25 miles being passed. So I liked doing some passing this time around. Tried to work it, but of course when all is said and done I feel like I could have gone harder. Definitely tried not to pansy on the downhills -- hammer!
What would you do differently?:

Ride faster.
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

So I came into T2 -- dismounted where I was supposed to, crossed the timing mat, and then tried to stop my Garmin while I ran. CRASH!! Over I went, on top of my bike, totally in the mud. Shouted some profanities. Oops! At the pool later that day, my son asked about some strange cut right below my butt -- ayup, a lovely gear pattern. Niiiiice. Will need to see if I trashed my tri shorts!!
What would you do differently?:

Not worry about stopping the Garmin and stay upright.
Run
  • 20m 32s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Hello? Legs?? Oh yeah... legs, you were busy remembering the 104-mile ride you did on Tuesday. And the 15-mile run you did on Thursday. And the 2-hour ride you did on Friday. Run fast?? Ha ha ha ha. Legs would have NONE of it. Seriously, my HR was lower than when I ran a half mary a few weeks ago. I just could not GO. It was sort-of a weird feeling -- different from it hurting like a mother because I'm going super-duper hard. I was pushing hard but just not feeling like I could "find it," if that makes sense.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing... This was a "dust-off" race, so the fact that I had lead legs was part of the bargain.
Post race
Warm down:

Hang out with team, cheer on teammates, eat a brat and a cookie, enjoy the SUNSHINE.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

IM CDA training.

Event comments:

Really great post-race food. Love that -- they serve up brats and have homemade cookies. Lots of sponsors with goodies too, and a nice venue for chillin' with the tri folk after the race.

Nice race!  Congrats on that swim, it was smokin' fast!  Way to get it done with all the miles you already put in this week.   As far as the garmin, now I am going to be afraid to multi-task through transition - thanks!

Awesome Race!

Would love to have no legs left and run 6:50/pace.

Next time put tape over your cleats and pull off right before you hop on the bike. Keeps the mud out.

Great race... Considering the week you had with workouts you did fantastic.  This was (like you said in your swim) all about redlining!! You can't compare Ironman vs. this!  You did very well!  (I am not a fan of that race though because of the run course)

Great job on your race! Whether it was a 6:50 or 7:30 pace, how awesome to run that fast with such a low HR - just goes to show how fit you are and ready for CdA!!
