Overall Rank = 83/303
Age Group = M 40-44
Age Group Rank = 10/31
Pre-race routine:

Traveled to Madison and slept at the in-laws, which is right across the street from the race. Ate a good pasta diner and got some rest. Up at 5:00 without an alarm, as usual. Little choc milk, banana, and 1/2 a clif bar and off I went.
Event warmup:

Rode my bike to the race start which was about a mile and 1/2 away. Visited with a few Donks and got all set up. Went to the water and swam a little to warm up. Back to the beach for the pre-race meeting. And then the highlight of the day....Got to meet Suzy. Only for a couple of minutes and then I had to go off to the races!
Swim
  • 27h 01m 8s
  • 1640 yards
  • 1h 38m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim. However, lots and lots of seaweed on the course. Literally felt like I was pulling weeds at times. Getting the floaters off your face was interesting....Had to learn a new stroke.....Stroke, Breath, Sight, get the weeds off your face, Stroke, etc.

My group caught the slow swimmers in the group before the first bouy and caught the group ahead of them by the second buoy. So it was full contact swimming the entire course. I held my own on this swim. My alergies ought to kick my a$$ later today with all that seaweed.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe hug the bouy line a little closer. I planned to stay to the left to stay out of the maylay...but with catching of the other groups in front of us, it was all maylay anyway all the way through.
Transition 1
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

Fairly long run from the beach to transistion. I still don't put my shoes on the bike because I gotta wear socks. Decent transition. Didn't forget anything except to start the garmin again. I don't know why I try to race with that thing. It is really just a training tool for me.
What would you do differently?:

Leave the Garmin at home.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 5s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.40 mile/hr
Comments:

Decent bike ride. Hills were tough. Rode and switched positions with #173 at least 20 times on the ride, to the point it got to funny and we were laughing at each other as we switched positions.

Got my HR right in line and just put my head down and rode. Bottle of Zym, bottle of water, and one gel on the ride. I think my nutrition caused my run issues that I will describe later.
What would you do differently?:

Back off on the water, it wasn't that hot.
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

Decent transistion. Took a while get my quick laces tight on the shoes but other than that everything went as planned. Left sunglasses, didn't need them today.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 55m 42s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Obviously the run is my limiter. My stomach was junk for the first 2 miles and then I got it under control. Had to stop to pee in the woods around mile 2. Fell into "my" pace that I knew I could hold, and just put my head down and ran.
What would you do differently?:

Fix bike nutrition on bike to prevent the first 2 miles of pain.
Post race
Warm down:

Meet up with Shelly and the family, ate a bananna, had a beer. Visited with the donks and picked up my race results. Looked around for Minnow, but she was must have been up getting her AG medal cause I couldn't find her...but the place was packed. Packed up my gear and went to get a gyro with the family after a nice long shower, etc. Man was that good!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutrition....soft course....the old bike technology that I ride.

Oh, running. and running. and maybe running.

Event comments:

Great Race- Wanted to be between 2:30 and 2:45 which is right where I finished. Battled through the tough stomach issues and finished hard. Need to spend a lot more time running...obviously, that is my biggest limiter right now.

Nice race Dino!  So funny - I forgot to turn on my Garmin for my race this weekend too!  Sounds like it was tougher to fight the seaweed than the swimmer!  Way to nail your time goal too!

Great race!

I feel your pain on the run, tough when so many seem to be able to run in the 6's, lol we just need to go even faster on the bike.

A+ Job....beating your goal on that course is way more than beating your goal.  The run is tough! Fun, but tough!

Come back to Madison to train and I'll give you my best run advice if you make me a faster swimmer!

My first open water swim was one of those seaweed races.  I came out of the water looking like a seaweed monster with the stuff everywhere.  Even found some down my top while I was out on the run.  Aren't they the best?  And I love that your post race recovery food was a banana and beer.  Great job.

Great to see ya out there on Sunday....even if it was on the toughest part of the run course.  That course is fun...in a sadistic type of way.  Glad your stomach cleared up a little to let you have a good finish.

Awesome RR and great job on getting it between your goal times! Now you know about your nutrition issues on the bike, and you'll do better on the run next time! Good job for pushing through the stomach issues...I don't think I would be able to do that! :-)
