I see flat coke at a lot of HIM and IM races, including the HIM I'm doing.  What's the deal with it?  Just to get some caffeine and sugar?  Is it a good option over Hammer or Gatorade?  If the "nothing new on race day" holds, have you guys trained with it?

Yes, quick shot of sugar/caffeine.  As for the nothing new rule, by the time you need Coke in a HIM/IM, the rule is more like "what do you have to get me to the finish....."

Next year I'll try it at 15, this year I'm done at 13.1!  Thanks, sounds great.  Do you hold off drinking it until then to prevent the diuretic problems, or just drink more water?

Nice, I had always assumed it was warm at IMs? Is it not???
I wish they had veggie broth for the vegetarians. I guess I will just pretend it is veggie broth if I need it that bad...

IMCdA 09 was on June 21st.  The water was in the mid 60's and was by far the warmest part of the day.  By the time I finished it was in the 40's and it may have dropped into the 30's by the time my wife finished(12:30 or so).

Talk about a shock.  I had trained in TN and TX in 100+ degree heat!

Cool, I was afraid to try the coke at my last HIM because of the "nothing new on race day" rule even though it sounded so good.  I will go for it during my IM though.

If it's cold out and rainy, I will try the soup too!

Mmmmmmmm coke. They don't even break it out until late in the race but once they do it doesn't matter if you never used it before in your life, start in on it!

Warning, once you start on the coke, you gotta keep going with it.

I'll have to find the reference.

I vaguely remember that the Ironmen of Mark Allen's era, used to drink a coctail of flat coke, no-doze, and advil.

I don't think that's recommended anymore.  :-)

Meh.  Not a huge fan of Coke...tried it at both Vineman and St George and it didn't do anything for me.  Not enough caffeine to really amount to much of an effect, at least for me.  But definitely a winner compared to chicken broth--I was looking for anything that might stay down and maybe replenish electrolytes at St George when I was fighting dehydration and the broth I tried to sip was the one thing that just about finally pushed me into active vomiting...tossed it after two sips.

IM Canada they had Pepsi

IMLP had generic Sam's club cola..yuck!

It has phosphates that can calm your stomach. Concentration of carbs is really high so when I drink cola I dilute it with some water too.

What he said.

I'd never used Coke or bananas in training, but they SAVED MY BUTT on loop 1 at IMAZ in 2008.  SAVED.  I had occasionally used coca cola on long bike rides but only after already bonking.  Mmmm...coke or mountain dew and a snickers bar...that will get your back on your bike and rolling again!

I actually noticed riders in the tour this year sipping it in the latter parts of the mountain stages.

Sur you gotta try Coke and Chicken Broth for yourself, but it could go either way.
Coke never settled for me, but the Chicken Broth was perfect.
