Pre-race routine:

Drove down on Saturday after a 35mile ride around WRL and the vicinity. It was raining at the site when I got there for packet pickup. Stopped by John's house and then off to Eric's for dinner and then back to John's to try to get some sleep. Sleep pretty good but started waking up every thirty minutes at about 3:00. Finally got up and snuck out of the house. Discovered that the string of my tri shorts had come almost all the way through. Decided to get some safety pins at the gas station and rethread it.

Ate two La Madeline's chocolate croissants and had a cup of gas station coffee on the way to the site. Gas station did not have any safety pins, but I did find paper clips. Should have gone to the bathroom there at the station and fix it, but I was in a hurry to get to the event.

Got to the parking area, checked the air in the tires, put on the race numbers for the helmet and bike and headed to transition. Got body marked and met fellow BT'er JChron. Found my rack and set up. Now to fix the tri suit... Uh, no place to do it - it was dark and port-a-potties had long lines. Finally after the first wave went off for the swim, I went to the welcome center where a nice girl let me in to use the lighted bathrooms - potentially embarassing swim crisis averted!
Event warmup:

Questing for a place to fix my tri shorts... should have ran and swam some, but didn't happen today...
Swim
  • 12m 37s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

Didn't get in the front row of the clydes, kinda stayed back a bit on the start. Water was icky warm (like the entire wave pee'd in the pond as we got in.) Horn sounded and we started swimming. Lots of contact at first, but it separated out after about 100-150 yds or so. Didn't really find that fast, smooth place and I seemed to be a bit off on sighting so I ended up pulling up a time or two to make sure I was still on course. Swim was OK, but not all that I am capable of.
What would you do differently?:

Not take two weeks off from swimming before a race (yes, this will be a recurring theme...)
Transition 1
  • 02m 91s
Comments:

Found rack spot quickly. No socks, just drop stuff and throw on helmet / sunglasses and shoes and go. 5th fastest T1 time for my AG.
What would you do differently?:

Not much - it was the highlight of the day :)
Bike
  • 43m 31s
  • 14 miles
  • 19.30 mile/hr
Comments:

Started the garmin up and it promptly died about 100 yds out of transition. I should have charged it after the 3hr ride the day before I guess. So I was racing by feel. I should have felt a little more. I was below my 20mph goal. I should have dropped one more gear. I was able to push that gear for about 4-5 miles in the middle, but about 4 miles from the end it seemed harder to push it so I backed off a little. Of course, had I rode in aero I would have most likely picked up that speed as well...

Oh yeah, didn't drink on the bike - not sure if that's a problem or not for me
What would you do differently?:

More aero, fry the thighs... practice drinking when rolling with a high intensity...
Transition 2
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

When I took off my cycle shoes, my feet were still soaking wet. Decide it would be a socks day with the heat and humidity, wet feet, distance, etc. Took a bit to get the socks on and then I was on my way. (From how long T2 took me, it would appear that I had brunch too)
What would you do differently?:

Not much really
Run
  • 43m 39s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 12m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

It was a brutal run/walk for me. The heat and humidity and sun were doing the 1-2-3 on me. I even got the cold chills at one point (never good when exercising in the heat). Actually the best part of the run was off the bike - the first half mile was not bad compared to the rest. Sadly I was soo zapped by the end of the run that I couldn't even hammer the pace down for the last 200-300 yards...
What would you do differently?:

Not sure there were any race day decisions that would have changed this death march.
Post race
Warm down:

Cold water, found a spot to sit in the shade of the tent in front of a fan. Hung out there for a good 20 minutes or so to get my body temp back down. I was not feeling real good after the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sporadic training over the prior two weeks, heat and humidity

Event comments:

Race production was fantastic. Band, plenty of food, beer, big tent and fans. Lots of vendors, etc. Both races I have done with this race company have been top notch!

Great effort through all the distractions....and good that you got your shorts fixed just in time.

I was like you after the run, though I did not find any fans.....I was looking for shade.

Not hydrating on the bike could have a huge impact on the run on a day like this was.

Andy,

Nice T1 and way to push through on a rough race day.  It is amazing what the heat will do to your racing plans.

Now train, recover, repeat......    Laughing

Great job Andy....My girlfriend volunteered for that race this past weekend.  She is actually sending me a shirt from there.

Awesome job under those conditions.

Holy Cow - it sounded super hot there.  Glad you were able to cool off at the end.  Great job to get to the finish.   Smile

I think you need to move to a less hostile climate - all of your races seem to be super hot.

Great job Andy especially given the conditions.

Was John's snoring waking you up every 30 minutes?  Next time make sure he gives you your own bed instead of sharing : )

Nice job on the race.  Racing in heat and humidity is extremely tough especially down were you are.  Good job pushing through a tough race.

Nice to finally meet you as well!  You did a GREAT job especially considering all the traveling and the long bike ride the day before.  And way to go on "feel" on the bike.

Andy, good job in tough conditions. I'm not sure I would've drank anything on the bike either... but in those conditions, I think hyperhydrating beforehand might be something I'd try. Nice work adapting on the bike and going by feel.

Way to perservere through the heat!  It's races like this one that provide great experiences for the next one and the next one! Maybe next time hydrate like crazy the day before and the morning of to top off the tank.

PS Next time charge the Garmin

Hey, good job on your race and hanging in there tough.

It's a great race and it sure made me wish I was on the other side of the fence instead of working the volunteer side.

Too bad I don't know what the other BT'ers look like and I only "knew" you by the BT shirt you were wearing.

Good luck on your upcoming races.

Nice race in brutal heat.  I think your 2 hr ride the day before in addition to no fluids on the bike is probably what killed your run.  You could have been dehydrated from the get-go.  But what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger, right?  Well done!

Yes, it was hot.  Too bad we weren't in the same wave we could have hung out together out there.
Glad you could make it over after the race. Please let us know when you get back in town.
