Do some people actually believe mustaches make them look better?  Most cases it makes people look older? I guess that's cool if you're under 21 and want to buy alcohol.

I originally grew mine to break up the visual line in my face.  I have a largish nose and I thought the mustache helped.  After I had it for a few years, it just felt weird to shave it.

I don't have it anymore for the following reasons:
1.  it makes me look like a 80's porn star
2.  my wife says it's scratchy.

I grew up in the 70's, and had a mustache until I was about 30.  I flirted with a goatee for one summer years ago, but have been clean shaven for the most part for the last nearly 20 years (not counting the month I spent in Nepal and Tibet with my daughter, where I stopped shaving because I could - although all the barbers kept offering me a shave, especially by the last week).  Mustaches used to be cool.

The funny thing is I started riding a motorcycle this year - I prefer cruisers over sport bikes.  As I get to know the culture, mrs gearboy is fretting that I will morph into one of the hairy tattooed types, as opposed to the clean shaven triathlete types.  I'm pretty sure taking about shaving one's legs in the biker community is not very common...

Because facial hair is HAWT!!!!  I think most men look better with facial hair.  That being said, sometimes just a mustache can look very 80s.

Is your questions directed towards men or women?  I have two different answers.

I rock a full beard 3-4 times a year, but after a few months it get's old and miss the clean feeling of shaving every day.   I always wanted to keep the stache when I shaved the beard, but it is not kind to my face  Will wait till next reunion and sport it then.

I recently entered the insurance business and I attended a gathering of insurance agents put on by one of the companies we represent. Looking around the room I was in the minority by not having a mustache. In fact I would say that 70-75% of the guys in the room had a stache. So in answer to your questions, you grow a stache to obtain the magical power it bestows upon your insurance sales.

my facial hair grows in so patchy I look like a total dufus with anything other than clean shaven.

But I'd grow one once, just to say I did......  if I could.

Sometimes a good "stache" can break up the monotony of someone's face.

Because my wife likes it, mo being part of the overall goatee

Secondary reason found after having it was an amazing saving in razor blades, seriously go through less than half of them that I used to, the chin area of the face seems to take most of the sharpness out of the blade.

What's the point of long hair versus short hair versus voluntarily bald? I'm sure there can be arguments for each or none of the above.

I hate shaving and it ( plus the goatee) cuts daily shaving time down to about one minute. Besides my wife and kids say I look goofy without them.

I have to admit it's graying faster then the hair on my head and is making me look much older than I feel

If you're having trouble with your mustache point maybe you need some mustache wax, a la Rollie Fingers.

I have the good fortune to grow a thick, Tom Selleck-type mustache. I don't know if I look better with one, but I know when I wear one for long periods of time & then shave, everyone who sees me comments on it and seems...uh, well disappointed.
