Subject: Number of races
Hey
I'm just wondering what is the average of amount of races a triathlete participates in a year.

Hi JJ, welcome to BT ...

There really isn't any average. Some people do one race a year, or even skip years; some people do 10 or more races a year; professional triathletes may do dozens (or just a few select ones!). It completely depends on the person, spare time, training, goals, funds ...

Most triathletes also participate in races other than triathlons, such as running races, cycling races, and swimming races.

I had/have 6 planned for the summer.  Missed the first two super-sprint (one missed for a suspected cracked fork, one for illness), completed a sprint and an intermediate.  One olympic and one HIM still to go.
Did 4 last year.
Thankfully Texas has a pretty long season so four or so feels pretty good for me; they are spaced out enough to keep a near goal but not wreck myself.

This year I am only getting three in. One so far last weekend. One on the 28th of Aug and one on the 18th of Sept. All were Sprint Tri's I had four scheduled but I got kidney stones three days before the race. OUCH don't get those. I also plan on doing my first Mud Run this year if I can get a good date that is somewhat close to my home. Last year was my first year doing tri's and I got in two. Next year I hope to up my total to 5 or so. I would like to do one earlier in the summer months and not wait till Aug for my first. But a lot of the ones I would like to do early get sold out very fast.

Totally depends on the person.

I will do 16 races this year...10 Tri's (6 sprints, 3 Oly, 1 (1x34x10)), 2 Dualthons, 4 running races.

Oh, and 7 car races....but I don't think that's what you're talking about ; )

Next year might look completely different as I move to longer distance races to see if those are for me.

as others have said, it totally depends on the person, the length of the races, your free time, your ability to train and also to recover, etc.  For me, I've done two fulls, two halfs, and 1 oly so far this year and I'll probably sneak in another full this year.  For running, I'll do at least 1 mary, probably a couple 50Ks, and a couple 50 milers.

I typically average 6-8 races (triathlon) per year.  This year I only have 5 (2 sprints, 1 oly, 1 HIM, 1 IM) on the schedule as I'm doing my first full.  I will usually replace the IM with another Oly and find another sprint or 2 for good measure.  I try to do the HIM yearly as my last race of the year; it's local and fits in the schedule nicely.

I have done 11 races so far this year. 3 Half Iron, one Olympic, and then 7 running races done earlier this season. I use the running races as speed workouts as part of my training. Then when its tri season, its ALL about tri season. I still have 1 last Half Iron this weekend, then its Marathon training till November.

....this is turning out to be a looooooooong season for me. But! I am still mentally sharp with it all and most importantly, injury free. I owe it to my huge base building early this season. Gonna take a few months off after the marathon!

I think I did the same number of races last year, but they were all much shorter in distance.

I've done 4 tris (2 sprints, 2 olympics) and one 40k TT so far. I plan to do one cycling road race and a marathon coming up this fall/winter.

Next year is blowing my mind.  I want to do so many races, but having trouble picking which ones I want do focus on.  The only thing I really have planned for sure is a 70.3 in June.

Other than that, there are about 26 other races I want to try out.  Hoping to focus on 3-4 of them, then do 5 or so for the learning experience.

I usually do 4-5 triathlons each year. Starting in May, I do one a month with the last one in Sept as my "A" race. Last year it that one was a HIM. The other ones are sprints with one OLY in the mix. I usually do the same local triathlons each year to measure my progress or lack there of from year to year.

I can't put a number on it...3-4 multi-events and as far as running races they have them every weekend and during the summer every Wednesday ...the fees range from $5 - $20 dollars so I do a ton of running races...or at least I try to when I'm not pregnant hahaha

Last year I did about 40 races. 8 of them were multisport, most others were running. I did at least 1 race every month and usually 2-3, and up to 6.

I'm not sure how knowing the average number of races other people do is helpful to you other than just curiosity.

I live in the midwest - tri season is April - October. Last year I did 5 races but it was my first year racing and I thought I was just gung ho. Turns out this year I'm on track for 5 also and I might pick up one more in October unless I'm totally wore out by then (which is a strong possibiliby . I actually feel pretty lucky to have a lot of races close to home (under 1 hour drive) so that makes it a lot easier. If had to travel I probably wouldn't race as much.

Like others have said already, it all depends on a number of factors.  In my case, I do about 6 tri's a year, 4-5 running events, and 1 organized century ride.  Skipped the century this year...adding a 2nd marathon for the first time.  Tri's this year will be 1 IM, 3 Olys, 2 sprints.

I do 2-3 tri's usually each year.  This year I am doing a 1/2 mary as well.  I do a bunch of 5 k's locally, to keep up my training.  Ironically, I hate running the most of the three parts of tri's.

First year of tri's - done 3 and signed up for one more, so a total of 4.

Running races this year - done 2 5K's and 2 more planned, done one 10K and one more planned, one 1/2 marathon planned.

Total will be 11 races (4 tri's, 7 runs)

This is my first season and I had the same question when I started.  I've done 2 sprints, have 2 more sprints and an Oly planned.  I also have done as many 5k races as I can plus a 1/2 mary planned at the end of the year.

We should make this into a poll!

This year I've done:
1 1/2 marry
2 Oly's
1 Sprint
1 HIM - Sept
Possibly 1 more sprint in Oct

So 5 on the books as of now.

1 sprint tri so far this year (and it may be the only one). Y'all make me feel lazy.

I'm currently training for a charity bike ride in October (century 1st day, 60-miler the next). Once that's done, I'll start thinking about more multisport races in '11.

Hello

I have done 2 Sprints, 1 5K beach run,   canceled 2 Sprints because of injury, have a Sprint Relay (swim-ride) next week and I will be doing a 1/2 IM AquaBike to finish the year.

According to my race log I have done 8 races this year ranging from running (5k-7mile) to sprint to Oly. I have a HIM in sept and possibly a half or full marathon in October and then at least 3 more running races. I feel a little out of sorts if I dont have something to look forward to. Although I am not a FOP triathlete or runner, I am still improving and I like the excitement of a race.

I've done:

1 sprint
1 oly (next weekend)
1 duathlon
1 organized bike ride
3 running races (between 5k and 6m)
1 adventure race (this weekend)

I'll probably do a couple more 5ks before the end of the year.  I get burned out if I do too many races and it can get pricey.
