Pre-race routine:

Woke up, got dressed, went down to make breakfast. Got a call from Marilyn asking me to bring her a pair of socks (she didn't want to repeat my mistake from last year!). Andy drove to the race site while I ate. Got there, set up transition and met up with Carly and Marilyn. Chatted for awhile, then picked up my chip and got bodymarked. Decided to try to go inside and use the bathroom. Crazy long lines. Marilyn and I thought we had awhile before we started based on our bib listed time, so we didn't go outside until 7:15. I got in the pool about 10 minutes later - good thing I didn't wait until 7:59 like I thought!!
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 09m 38s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

Exact same swim time as last year. I tried to work on the things that John Pace talked to me about in the coached swim session, but I just forgot when I got into the pool. I got passed by quite a few people and was breathing a lot more often than I usually do. Felt slow, but I did pretty much the same as last year.

Same time as last year.
What would you do differently?:

Work on swim positioning.
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Ran out of the pool and got lots of cheers from the RTC volunteers, which was awesome! Ran into transition but miscounted my rack. Oh well. Stepped into my shoes. Right one folded under my heel and I had a hard time getting it unstuck. Got it straightened out and ran out.

22 seconds slower than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Freak thing with the shoe. Seems to be the theme of the day (see T2 for more on that)
Bike
  • 43m 56s
  • 11.4 miles
  • 15.57 mile/hr
Comments:

I really forgot how hilly this course was. There were lots of parts where I was doing 18 - 20 mph, but just as many in the 9 - 11 mph range due to the climbing. I still passed quite a few people, but I just wasn't feeling confident. There were parts where all I wanted to do was pull over and take a nap in the grass.

28 seconds faster than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Work on my hill riding.
Transition 2
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

Revenge of the shoe here. I tried taking my shoes off on the bike. Left one came out easily, right did not. By the time I got to the dismount line, I knew it wasn't coming out, so I just unclipped the shoe. Ran in with one bare foot and one shoe. Probably looked hilarious, but I figured it was better than fighting at that point. I'm sure it slowed me down.

Got back to the rack and found that someone racked over my stuff, so I slid her bike down while racking mine. Got socks on - stumbled a bit - and then into shoes. Tying laces takes a bit.

30 seconds slower than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Work on getting my feet out of my shoes. Maybe lace locks?
Run
  • 43m 12s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 13m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

As usual, here's where my race started to suck. I had a great first two miles (25:00 total), but the last mile was just a mental struggle. It was all I could do to keep running and most of the time I lost that mental battle. I was having a hard time getting enough breath despite using the inhaler, which I think was a result of the humidity. It was frustrating because I had such a great start to the run.

Neil gave me the best encouragement of the day as I was getting to the finish line and really struggling - "50 meters to River City Diner!". That really gave me the final push I needed. I was so looking forward to being done and having breakfast!

15 seconds faster than last year.
What would you do differently?:

No idea. I need to do more bricks I think.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and tried to find water, which was way harder than it should have been. Took a shower and grabbed my bike as it started to sprinkle. Chatted with Marilyn and Carly again - they both had great races!!

Then went to breakfast - YUM!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mostly mental. I was listening to the doubt and giving up even though I could have done it physically. I just wasn't feeling the race that day.

Badger Jen Moose darling ...

I don't think you've ever lacked for a moment in mental strength. You have gotten better at the disciplines, and you know that; the rest of the missing seconds went to "shyte happens."

You had fun ... you won. That is it--that really is it. And thank YOU for reminding me of it ...

other than transitions you were faster than last year so that's a big positive!  My transitions always suck...so I put little emphasis on them.  Nice jon and glad you enjoyed a nice breakfast after!

Nice job....

You overcame every obstacle and kept on towards the finish strong! Faster bike and run rocks!

Just think how the run would be with no humidity and the ability to breath w/o limitations?

Thanks for the shout outs.  Good job on the faster bike and run.  I don't have an inhaler and it was hard to breath on the run!  Definitely humidity!

Great job Jen. To see improvement even with the problems you encountered is definitely a win.

I hope you don't mind but I had to laugh at the thought of watching you run to T2 with one bike shoe on.

Lace locks are a great help. It is so hard to tie your shoes quickly in T2. Definitately buy some.

Great job! Those little demons on the shoulder are there - but even though you might feel like you gave them a little credence getting through it is pretty good proof that you are mentally tough!
