I'm hating this heat too.  But I admit those who have said we New Englanders are heat wimps are right.  But why not run at 15 degrees and snowing?  There's nothing like the looks on your neighbors faces as you run by their driveways while they're snow blowing away the latest 12 inches of snow!

Like some of the other southerners, I like the heat.  I won't complain about heat so I fully reserve the right to complain about the cold.  It was 67 the other morning and that, after a summer, was downright chilly.

Love the heat.  Grew up playing sports that included wearing some sort of pads in 100+ weather.  It keeps me loose.  The cold on the other hand is hard for me to get stretched out in.  Luckily I live in Houston where it's like a sauna 8 or so months out of the year.

the bear - 2010-08-30 3:09 PM Always have to laugh at New Englanders complaining about heat when it's still in the 80s! We call that a cool spell in august.

x2!!!

Of course the year I train for my first Ironman, we have the hottest summer in decades. There was a week where the high temps were over 105 every day. Brutal summer in Kansas.

Here's a thermometer (IN THE SHADE) from a training ride in July. I realize in some places that 70 or 80 degrees is "hot" but you really have to put it in perspective...

briderdt - 2010-08-30 3:27 PM Not at all! I love the heat! Low to mid 80's is perfect, especially for riding. Though, to be fair, I live in a not-so-humid area...

That's not heat.  95F and 95% humidity.  That's heat (and has been our weather for the last 2-3 months).  I DREAM of mid 80s.

I have had my fill of it.  Same time every year.  End of August and I'm ready for cooler temps.  Unfortunately, september us typically in the 100's as well.  Just make it to October...

Love that look! Although we have a lot of people who run and ride in the snow around here but there's always someone getting in their car or shoveling the walk that look at me with disbelief.  If they make a comment about how hard it must be I always respond with out much I love it.  Heck I remember one post snow run last November where my coach and I were pushing another running buddy's daughter in a stroller over snow banks and such.  It had warmed to 40ish degrees, she was bundled up and we all had a blast.

I will fully accept that I might be nuts but I'd rather be nuts and running in the snow than nuts and eating bon bons on the sofa.

I say the reverse about cold!  I don't complain about cold, wet, raw days (we have lots of those) so that I CAN complain about heat.  I hate it.  10 years of living and training in the south and while I learned to deal with it, I NEVER got used to it.  I'm so thankful to live somewhere where heat is rarely an issue!

If I could convince my southerner husband to move to Alaska, I would. Tongue out

I've run when it's over 100 and when it's -15. It's all good! Dressed properly neither is a problem. One thing I don't care for is freakishly strong winds. We get winds here that gust 50-60+ and that can make things miserable. Extreme windchills in the winter and a sand blasting effect in the summer. I'll still go out though. Once a person starts making excuses for not doing the training, then almost any excuse can be enough to blow it off.

Two things:

1. How does one dress properly for 100*F + weather? When I've run in the heat (90s), I'm wearing shorts, sports bra, and a light colored wicking singlet. What else can someone wear in extreme that's appropriate?

2. I don't think it's "making excuses" when it's too hot to run. For many people, extreme heat can lead to medical problems. Personally, I'd perfer to modify my workout than faint in downtown Baltimore or have heat stroke.. but I guess I'm just not that hardcore.

1. Sunscreen and a white hat.

2. People run the Badwater 135 in extreme temps. How do they survive? Certainly not by avoiding training in the heat. People can adapt - or they can make excuses - unless there is some underlying medical condition.

Or they can just avoid it altogether.  No excuses necessary.  I just don't sign up for races that require that type of adaptation any more.  I did that once and I won't do it again.  It's not an excuse, it's a choice.

Comparing the average athlete to the Badwater athlete is a bit ridiculous, IMO.

I - personally - feel awful and sick when I run outside in 95*+ heat, and for me this is a hobby. I'd rather run inside (or bike/ swim) on days where I find it's too hot to run outside. To say that's "making excuses" is insulting.

Lived in the south all my life and the heat doesn't bother me as much.  I had chances to move up north but I prefer the heat over the cold. You can cut the humidity with a knife in South Carolina.  I am not a fool and will try to run early in the morning or late in the evening to beat the heat as much as I can.

I hate the heat too.  I have MS, and the heat causes my symptoms to flare up.  Numb hands, feet, and loss of vision are not fun.  I can't wait until it cools down here in Oregon so I don't have to get up at 4:00 AM to go for a run.
40-50 degrees is my sweet spot.

I prefer the heat any day. So far i have not had any issues running in very hot climate. But as soon as i say that i will fall out from a heat stroke. On the other hand, i love cold weather but since i lost 70 lbs of body fat i get cold very quick and around 40 degrees i'm looking for some sweats.

you know its been hot when you're excited about cool running weather and it's almost 90...miami summer's are brutal. I used to live in Colorado and would rather run in 5 degrees, crunching through snow, than run in 95 deg and 85% humidity. can't wait to get back colorado even with the short tri season there.

Did you think the people who run Badwater are special? Or perhaps it's that they trained and adapted that allows them to perform in such extreme conditions.

What happens to people when they do a race in hot conditions? If they never train in it they most likely have a very difficult time.

Making excuses is not necessarily a bad thing. It's simply making a personal choice to avoid doing something a person doesn't particularly like. We all do it.

I dunno... I trained in 100+ degree heat all summer and still nearly blacked out a few times. Saw stars, felt nauseous, disoriented, the whole bit. Maybe only one summer wasn't enough to acclimate... maybe I had other issues going on, I dunno. But I think there is something to be said about the individual's body and their individual reaction to the heat. Cause we're not all the same, you know.

Why punish yourself... I think its just silly.  I run outside when I think its nice enought out.  If not I run indoors if not I sit on the couch. No issues...  Some of you guys should lighten up...  I do this for fun not to make $...
