Subject: Update - not good news
Peyton had the MRI and saw the doctors at the eye clinic again... it is retinoblastoma, and is advanced (stage D) so they are taking her to the OR  next Wednesday to remove her left eye.  They don't think it has spread to the other eye.  They also want to see her sister (who is 8 months old now) next week to look closely at her eyes.
I had to come home for a couple days but will go back on Monday - I have 2 weeks of vacation starting Mon. so will spend them with her.   This is very sad news for us but we are hopeful that there has been no spread of the cancer and the removal of the eye will cure her.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread - although I don't post much I do lurk daily and love the BT community for being so supportive to complete strangers.. you are all special people.

As an ophthalmologist and a father of 5 young children, my thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.

If it has not spread outside the globe, she had a good chance of doing very well (greater than 92% survival rates). I have seen multiple kids with retinoblastoma and, with removal of the eye, I have seen many do wonderfully in the long run.

I realize that only "92% do well if it is confined to the globe" is not 99%, and if it was my child I would still be scared, but the treatments are getting better every year and the odds are in her favor.

Also, diagnosis at an age of less than 2 years helps her prognosis.

Truly praying for all of you.

God Bless you.

Cathy - just saw this upon returning from vacation. Prayers from our family and our church family going up for you all. The daughter of a friend of mine from church had this, and I can safely say she is a well adjusted well loved and respected sophomore in High School now, I am sure that technology has improved since her surgery. Keep us posted.

I am so sorry to hear about your grand daughter. I pray that they are successful in removing all of the cancer and that it hasn't spread to her other eye.

I know the cancer itself is overwhelming right now and you're not thinking much beyond that. However, as someone who wears a prosthetic in their right eye, I just wanted to say that eye prosthetics have come a loooong way from the 'glass ball' days. Unless I told you I wore a prosthetic, you wouldn't even know! And I have been able to live a full life just fine with vision in only one eye. I know you are in Canada, but I go to http://www.dallaseye.net/here in Texas. He is amazing and I've seen him fit the tiniest of babies all the way up! I was fitted for my first when I was 8 years old. Anyway, just wanted to post some hope and good thoughts for the future beyond cancer.

I am so sorry to read your last post.  I have son not much younger than your granddaughter and all I have wanted to do since reading your update is to hug him.  What a horrible thing for any family to deal with and what a traumatic thing for your granddaughter to live with.  I hope you got some comfort from grbfrog's post above.  I will be thinking of you and your family.

Important and fortunate she has such a great support team.  Just as hard on family as it is actual patient.   Kids bounce back in amazing ways and there are reasons we were fortunate to be given two of alot of things on our body.   God always has a backup plan   Told my wife about your situation this morning and we are both thinking/praying for you lots.
