Turnout is looking suprising light for this race. It's a great place to race. I wonder why it's not picking up in popularity. Maybe we're just not getting the word out enough...

Battle at Buckhorn is a great race!!!

  • It's easy and surprisingly quick to get to
  • You can park steps from transition
  • Lots of room for spectators around Transition
  • Beautiful lake
  • Wonderful rural roads to ride on
  • And wide open views of the competition and friends for much of the run

I have nothing to do with FS Series or this race other than enjoying all their races and especially this one.

I'm ready! This will be my third tri and I'm excited! How's the water? Is it usually wetsuit legal?

I didn't write anything about the lake itself in last years report, but I did write that it was 73F last year, so I bet it will be wetsuit legal this year as well. I remember it being very clean. Everyone says White Lake is so nice, but I think I like Buckhorn better.

Check out all the comments of others who did race reports in the races section.

This is my favorite sprint - ever. FS Series did an awesome job in designing the course and producing the race. I did this race in 2009 when it was held in June. The May date likely makes for cooler temperatures -- too bad it conflicts with my work schedule now. Very clean lake, all right-hand turn bike course with lightly rolling hills (keeps me in a good rhythm), and a pretty darn flat run course. There's a slight climb coming out of transition on the run, but it makes for a nice gradual down hill finish - definitely a PR quality 5K.

Anyone want to go for an open water swim? I'm on Kerr Lake and close to Mayo and Hyco. I really need to practice in open water and my husband and 7 year old won't be able to save me if something happened.

Anyone know of any groups that get together and swim OW? If so, give me the details, please.

I rode this course today, then went back down to my Dad's house. It was a pretty good course except for Antioch Church Road and New Sandy Hill Church Road. They have recently been resurfaced and there's fine gravel (grit) on them and they are pretty rough as well, slowed me down a bit, but may be better on race day. Also, New Sandy Hill Church isn't marked, but I can give you a landmark if you want.

On a personal note, I had a good ride and I'm ready to race on the 21st!

Oh no, I hate when they use that fine gravel! In lingers on the turns for ever, making them very sketchy (for me anyway). I'm sure it will have blown off the main part of the road, just be careful turning onto and off of those roads.

So have they just scraped the roads preparing for new paving, or have they already repaved? Some of it was repaved and in great shape last year.

My dad says that's "resurfacing" not repaving. It was rough turning and riding. It changes over on Antioch Church road where it goes into Wilson CO and continued to New Sandy Hill Church and it's on that huge hill making it pretty hard too. The rest of the roads were in great shape! 581 and 42 especially were awesome!

This race is awesome!  I did it for the first time last year.  Depending on how I feel after the White Lake 70.3 on May 14, I will be doing this race again.

Very well organized. FANTASTIC bike course.  You can really move, but it has some rolling hills to keep you honest.  The run course is okay, but I'm not complaining!

It was very full last year, which was nice as it was my first race of the season, but now that I have a couple races already done, I want more people!!!

High 60s Monday night according to FSS website it should be wetsuit legal. I just soaked mine because someone told me they can rip if you don't moisten them up before wearing for another season. My gut stresses it bad enough.

I need to come up with a race plan. So far it's have fun and don't get hurt. My training has been terrible and I've been sick for almost 2 weeks. Sinus infection and ear infection left over to remember it by. Zero training last week. I do want to push myself on one of the three. If the roads are good I'll push the bike, otherwise the run. I really felt like my core work was paying off.

I'd push it on the bike, it's a fun (read: fast) course.

That was the plan until I saw charminchick's comment about resurfacing, not repaving. If I see that stupid fine gravel on the road, especially turns, I'm slowing down and just getting through it. I am looking forward to getting my season started!

I asked my dad about those roads and he said they weren't too bad. The fine gravel is really only on two roads and it's on that big hill (be ready after you cross the lake again ) Otherwise, it's a really good course and there's some fast flat parts and good roads. Hope to see you all there! I hope to make the prerace meeting tonight, but I gotta run home before I drive down.

Wow! I had a good race. 2nd place Athena category.

Hey Scottie, were you #43? I think you were next to me in the TA now that I look at your picture. Hope the race went well for the rest of you. That was a fun race. I'll do it again!

I was looking at the results and the swim times seem really speedy for everyone.  Was there a current or was the swim just a tad bit short?  Or did all the fasties just show up?  I might need to add this race for next year- seems like a good one!

My time was pretty fast and I wondered that too. It felt like 1000 meters and it was pretty calm easy water to swim in. It wasn't too crowded either, so no one really got in my way and slowed me down. I'm not a fastie, but this was a personal record time for me(18:36)!

I think it was pretty true. The men's wave was crowded but after the first bouy things were good. No chop, 70 degree water. Personal best hre to @1:20/ 100 yds.
