Pre-race routine:

Got up at awful early to drive over to Flint. Drink a HUGE diet coke and ate a cliff bar on the way.
Event warmup:

Walking from the parking lot 4 blocks away to the expo, packet pick up area x2. Standing in line at the potty.
Run
  • 1h 55m
  • 10 miles
  • 11m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out the first 100 yds with Rick and Trixie, then got into my old lady pace. I was a little concerned about my lack of nutrition due to illness, but treated it as a training run and didn't worry about time AT ALL!! It was fun!

There were water stations set up every mile, I drank one and wore one at each station. I ran miles 1-5 fairly comfortably walking at the water stations. Puked up my gel and cliff bar at mile 4.75, then felt good!

Debated on taking my second gel, but decided to go for it. It took from miles 5.5-6.5 with some water to get it all in, but it stayed.

There were a million hills that just flat out kicked my ass!! I didn't realize how freaking hard it is to run up a real hill. I ran up the first few, but my HR was so high by the top, I had to walk to slow it down. So...I walked up the majority of the hills, so I could use the downhill for speed. Worked out much better for me.

My fingers were huge swollen sausages by mile 7, so it's not the heat that makes me swell!!
What would you do differently?:

Work hills, somewhere...
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with Rennick, Grillmaster, Trixie and Rick. Watched Trixie kick ass on the Marine pull up challenge. OMG, GI Jane has nuthin' on this chickadee!! I'm askeered!! :)

Tried to stay dry through the monsoon like rain.

Best of all...I got an official Mafia IZZLE!!!! WOOHOO BABY!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm a hill wimp, and lack of nutrition the week before.

Event comments:

This was a VERY well organized and run race. There were tons of post race activities and food. AND the finishers' medals were purple which matched my race outfit perfectly!!

GREAT run, Wendi!  Especially after being sick lately!  I can't wait to see you kick some butt in Chicago!  I'll be the one on the sidelines trying to hand you beer....

Awesome job on the race.  Glad you got to meet some of the Mi Mafia.  Are they as crazy as they all seem to be?  Hope you made it home safely.

Thanks for coming to visit, Wendi!  AWESOME race, you tacked those hills with reckless abandon and set a new PB for race run distance!!!  AND...not to mention...you killed you first out-of-state race!!!  Not to mention the G8RSizzle induction....oooh, what an awesome weekend!!

You've got every reason to be proud of yourself, conquering the nutrition and health demons to run a great race in spite of all the adversity.  Congratulations, and what a great accomplishment!!!

When's the next mafia event?!

Great job, Wendi!  (Was this your way of getting out of Katrina's way??)  You were awesome and made it a point to have a good time and positive attitude!
