Age Group Rank = 78/182
Pre-race routine:

Arrived to transition area rather LATE... Got to my sister's house at the prescribed time of 4:30 AM... to find her in her PJ's... lights off, SLEEPING! She changed quickly, and we got on the road around 4:45 and arrived at transition around 5:45 after parking. They were giving the "LAST CALL" before transition CLOSED! I don't know why I am unable to plan my time better in the AM. (!!) I wedged my stuff in between two other people's stuff and prayed for the best.
Event warmup:

Hung around with Tri-take-me-away (Jessica) and my sister... General people watching, saw some of the Sprint participants getting started on the run. Cheered them on... Didn't do much of a formal warm up, aside from some stretching. Chatted with a couple of guys in the porta-pottie lines.... glamorous.
Swim
  • 34m 20s
  • 1619 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

It should be noted the SWIM time includes the TREK from the water to the transition area. (3 minutes) My actual water exit time was 31:15.

Water was refreshingly CRISP! Not as COLD as last year. Water was pretty calm, and I didn't run into as many sideways waves as I did last year. I did have a little trouble sighting, which is rather inexcusable as we were routed along a WALL. I found myself meandering off to the right.

My wave was a mixture of women my age and men aged 50-54. The men were quite aggressive, and I spent a fair amount of time in the beginning of the swim trying not to get kicked in the face.
What would you do differently?:

Pay closer attention to the wall. (DUH!)
Transition 1
  • 03m 38s
Comments:

Took off the wetsuit without sitting down. An OK transition, not fabulous.
What would you do differently?:

Practice taking off that stupid wetsuit. I already cut 2.5 inches off the bottom so it doesn't get stuck on my ((HUGE/WELL DEVELOPED/BULGING/MUSCULAR)) calves. ;)
Bike
  • 1h 13m 1s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 20.38 mile/hr
Comments:

When I hopped on my bike after the swim, I felt unusually comfortable... I was able to be aero almost the entire bike ride... something I struggle with. In fact, I felt SO comfortable on my bike, I actually took the time to glance down and make sure it WAS MY BIKE! I almost thought I may have picked up someone else's bike! But no, it was Lucy... I was just having a remarkable bike-day. I felt great on the bike, I was pedaling my A$$ off but I didn't feel winded or tired.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. An improvement over last year! And I thought I had a good bike ride last year!
Transition 2
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

An OK T2. Probably not as fast as it could have/should have been, but OK nevertheless.
What would you do differently?:

Just picked up the pace a little.
Run
  • 1h 16m 2s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 12m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

So I was having a great bike ride pedal pedal pedal... Jumped off the bike and started to run, and just got off to a miserable start. Feet were moving but not really taking me anyplace. Started talking with a girl who was having similar running issues, but she took off on me. Tried to keep running, but was feeling stiff and sore and unmotivated.

My run was almost 12 minutes faster this year than last year. I'm wondering what I was doing last year? On all 4's? I don't know. I don't remember feeling THIS bad last year.
What would you do differently?:

My off season plan is going to involve a heck of alot of running. I've got a plan, and it should help a great deal.
Post race
Warm down:

Stood in front of the water blowing fan. Cooled down, felt great. Got shoes all wet and sloshy.

Met up with Jessica, who had a GREAT race! We then walked around out to the transition area to collect our stuff. We saw the portapottie guys again and high fived them... :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My tree trunk feeling legs.

Event comments:

My only complaint is the condition of LSD. It was bad last year and it's getting WORSE! Also, the water stations had warm water. But it was awfully hot outside, so I can't imagine how they could have kept that water cool.

Course: Out and back down LSD. Lake Shore Drive is **STILL** in need of repair. This year I saw quite a few bikers with flat tires, broken chains and other mechanical problems. I've got to wonder if they got stuck in some of the potholes I saw, or if they just all had bad luck simultaneously. (??) I don't know. Also witnessed an auto accident, which may have been caused by a cyclist. Organized chaos. You must keep your wits about you. Other than that... it was a fast/flat/out and back course done twice.

Jeeze, I was going to ask if you wanted to go for a ride with me and my pop when I'm in Chicago in October, but now I'm reconsidering! Way to smoke it! That run must've been pretty toasty by the time you hit the pavement, huh?

Nice race -- really good bike. It was definately all those miles you put in for the June Bike Challange!

Great race.  I agree with LSD needing just a little work.  The patches they laid down were probably as bad as some of the potholes.  I couldn't believe the number of flats.  Great job.

Nice race Whizzer! You really cranked on the bike! Don't worry, I always have lead legs for the run. My goal is also to improve on the run. Planning on doing quite a few running races too.Congrats!

Great race! Don't feel bad about the run - I had the same problem in pretty much every race I did this summer too. Keep up the running in the offseason and you'll be zipping out 8 minute miles next year

And I agree on the condition of LSD. When I rode it on "Bike the Drive" back in May, I noticed that it had deteriorated A LOT over the winter. This was one of my deciding factors in not doing this race.

Wow great race Laura, and geezus jehosaphat, that was some smokin' bike leg. You are one fast chick....and I mean that in a sincerely good way!

Keep it up, the run after the fast bike gets easier with training...or so I've been told. You and I are in the same boat!
