Pre-race routine:

Woke up early. Verified that I had everything. Had a coffee only and headed out. Set up all my gear in order at the site. The bike stand was too low for my bike so I had to place it on a slant. Verified the ins and outs for the various legs of the tri. Then I went over to the beach to watch the first IM swimmers coming in.
Event warmup:

I biked to the event ... a distance of 12kms.
Swim
  • 17m
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 16s / 100 meters
Comments:

I knew that I was slow but 17 minutes for a 500 meter swim is incredible! Some people complained that it was more like a 750 meter course. It did feel like it.

Lots of jostling in the water but no more than usual.
Transition 1
  • 08m
Comments:

The distance from the T1 area to the cycle start line was about a half km!!!! Good warmup but time consuming and awkward in cycling shoes.
Bike
  • 1h 01m 11s
  • 30 kms
  • 29.42 km/hr
Comments:

I made a big mistake in toying with my front derailleur the night before. It was totally screwed up so I left it in the large front ring throughout the race and used my back sprockets only. Even the rear derailleur was acting up. I could not seem to lign up the chain properly and it skipped once in awhile.
What would you do differently?:

Need a new bike.
Transition 2
  • 03m
Run
  • 30m 17s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 04s  min/km
Comments:

Nice run. I found myself drifting off and losing track of my pace. Then i would run a bit faster. In the second half of the run, I picked up my pace and finished with a nice sprint again.
What would you do differently?:

Stop concentrating on women competitors and concentrate more on my pace! Well maybe not ... :-)
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate a bit, drank a lot of water.

Event comments:

The swim start and the bike start were both way too far from the transition area.

I met Jen (keepitup), Mark Benton and his wife and another yount BT'er from Tweed Ontario (sorry I forgot your name and BT handle!).

My brother JP (IceT2) competed and finished a few scant seconds behind me! If he ever gets a decent bike, he will kick my flabby old butt!!!!

Had a great time at the Canadian today.  Went to a tex/mex restaurant with Jen after the race.  I had intended to go with Mark Benton, his wife and children but lost them in the shuffle.  JP decided to go directly home.

In all it was a nice season ender.  So, that's it until next spring!!!!

Woo hoo....we did it again, mon ami!!  I'm proud of you...look at that run time!!!!!!!!

Yes, I do feel funny now that the race season is officially over.  Fortunately our tri club is making more of an attempt at doing stuff in the fall, so the social part is still there.

Do you have a headache from the "green stuff" ?

Well, sorry to hear those women slowed you up (probably on purpose!)  I know I would've tried too!

Great job.  This is your last race??  Come to Florida...plenty more races here!

I am afraid that I am addicted to looking at women and that at my age, I am not about to change ... sigh!!!  Florida sounds good but I think that I may save that for this spring; I might do the St Anthony's.   Anyways, it's time to get back to my studies and start gearing up for fall and winter.
