Comments: Had fun milling around with Kim, made a quick run back for one more imodium (good thing!), and got a pretty good starting spot. Veered off course a couple of times, only got yelled at by the kayaker once. Starting passing the guys in the earlier wave before the halfway point, actually caught a few of them in the wave before them. Only got passed by one guy in the wave behind me - I think. It was shallow - I hit my hand on the bottom, and my first reaction was 'FISH'! Actually drew blood, but no need to panic, it was just the bottom. Ouch. Walked around the turn buoy so that I could say that I did.... actually walked faster than a few swimmers. Overall, a bit different, but a good swim. What would you do differently?: Learn to site better! Practice more.... Transition 1
Comments: This felt good, and fast. I didn't even get lost - I left my prescription goggles on until I found my bike! Got the wetsuit off well, no clue where all of the time went. I'm sure I didn't have a mimosa. What would you do differently?: Same old....move faster. Bike
Comments: I loved this course. The roads were horrid, but the scenery was beautiful, the hills were easy, and the descents were fun! I really wanted to beat 3 hours, and I did! I had one jerk spend half the course drafting off me - I was LOOKING for a marshall. Jeff has now explained how to use fluids to get a idiot off my wheel. Can't wait. We actually got a little rain - roads got a bit wet, and volunteers were yelling warnings. Not what I expected, but I rolled with it! Roads weren't closed to traffic, and while most drivers were great, there were a few fools. Loved having the intersections closed, though! I opened my 'slam' bottle with my teeth - new skill. Drank most of my SE, a 7 scoop bottle, and drank about half my water. Felt good. Thought about peeing on the bike, decided I didn't want pee on my new bike or wheels! What would you do differently?: I probably could have pushed a bit harder - still a learning curve. Not much though, I'm thrilled with this ride. Transition 2
Comments: Recurring theme - not sure why this was so slow. EXCEPT....that when I shoved my shoes on, I realized that I had stashed my gu in one. Dumb. Off with the shoe. Gu on the ground (where it stayed, another mistake) shoe back on. Pill bag still in shoe. Damn. Shoe off, pill bag in jersey (Yea!) Shoe back on. Oh, yeah, and no yanks. Okay, maybe I do get a minute of this. Oh, and it was a LONG run in with the bike. Just sayin'. What would you do differently?: Lots, apparently. Run
Comments: Bit discomboulated heading out of T2 - as usual. Took all of my pills with one swig of water, choked a bit. However, really glad Jeff gave me thermolytes or endurolytes or whatever they were. Maybe I should figure I what I took. Hmm. Headed out onto the course, saw my Wednesday Women buddies - Heidi and Amy - what a boost! Those girls can cheer!! Started off at a pretty good clip, realized I should slow it down a bit...tried to hold it to 8:30, almost did, first mile was 8:17. At mile 2 (8:35) I felt a wheeze starting - WTF? - I haven't had a problem with asthma in over a year, and I didn't even bring the inhaler on the trip. DUMB. It got a bit better, and then Kim came flying down behind me. WOW!!! She looked so good, it was a real boost. Of course, mile 3 was at 8:51, so she was holding a pace of about 2/mm faster....!! I held on, walking the uphills, charging the downs for miles 4-5-6, holding 9:36, 9:06 and 8:54. Then I hit La Crema. I was really looking forward to this part - flat dirt and gravel through a vineyard, awesome. Not to be - my chest started to hurt. Lightheaded, wheezing, horrid. Walking more than running, and really getting annoyed with myself. On top of all this, I had a 48 minute headstart on Jeff, and I really wanted to beat him accross the line!! He was over an hour faster than me at Wildflower, so that's what I was shooting for. No idea where he was, and if he caught up to me in the vineyard, during the loop, I wouldn't see him, and wouldn't know how fast he was gaining on me!! Mile 7 and 8 were 10:01 and 10:11. I tried to keep running so I wouldn't get busted walking by Jeff! Success - kinda. I was trotting when I saw him at mile 8 (his mile 5.5), and that was a boost. He looked strong, which was awesome, and I knew that if I didn't quit, he wouldn't cross the line before me! Not that I got faster, mind you. Miles 9, 10 and 11 were ugly - 10:22; 10:55 and 10:50. Aagh. It felt like a death march. The lack of gu (with caffeine) was coming back to haunt me - I tried a powerbar gel, and it helped a bit. Mile 12 was a 9:10, and the end was in sight. I can usually bring it home - and I did pick it up - but I got passed by 2 women in my AG in the last half mile...and I WALKED part of it. That hurt. I got it under 9 - mile 13 was 8:45 - but it felt horrid. I couldn't breathe, I had nothing left. I got pushed aside, at the finish line, by a 50 year old guy - really, dude? You had an 8 minute head start on me, and THAT'S when you had to pass? - and got caught by great volunteers. They held on for a few minutes, poured ice down my back, and tried to get me to medical. I didn't think that they'd have generic inhalers, so I declined. Turns out, they did. (Thanks, Kim!) Hung out with Kim - what an amazing race she had!! Waited for Jeff to finish. His best was a 5:35, and it was so cool to see him come down the chute with a 5:18 - not only did he shatter his PR, I got to finish first! Win, win. And, I called his finish time in advance - I thought he'd do a 5:15! What would you do differently?: I think I covered that.....big one being bring the inhaler. Post race
Warm down: Held onto a volunteer. Held on to Kim. Held on to Jeff. Sprayed Kim's sunscreen all over. ATE. ALOT. Drove 4 hours home.....Ate more. Last updated: 2010-11-02 12:00 AM

Drove up on Saturday - with our characteristic late start. Pre-race meeting (with good info), packet-pickup, setting out gear at T1 (saw Mirinda!), amd shopping! Got OOMPH shorts (3!)for 75% off, and a Vineman jersey. Doing my part to help the local economy. Checked in at the hotel, ran into friends at the lobby, happy coincidence - especially since they live 1 mile away! Had an awesome dinner at Hana Sushi, and saw the movie Horrible Bosses. The movie served it's purpose, we were resting, but it was, well, kinda horrible!
Got a good night's sleep, for a race night, and was up and ready to go at 4:30. Upgraded my breakfast from the poptart to a powerbar, still had the pepsi. Thanks to a family connection we found a shortcut, and made it too the river in less than 30 minutes.... much better than the hour we were advised to allow!
As usual, just setting up T1 and stressing. That gets my heartrate up just fine.
