Did not see the official thread...

So anyone who has done this one before (the HIM) what are your comments?  Well done?  Being Miami I assume the course is going to be flat and fast.  I like the idea of running through the zoo. Do you see any animals or is it on paths away from the exhibits?

Trying to get over my post IM blues and pick a new race.

I've never done it before, but will be there this year!  I decided on this race as my first half because I have heard great things about the race - great organization, great course to include a clear lake swim (unusual for Florida), fast bike (but wind could be an issue) and a run that takes you through the zoo.  Hopefully, those who have experience with the race will chime in with their experience.

I have not done. I did hear that the run to T1 is rocky - so people left shoes near the swim out. The weather is nice - November in Miami. The course is flat. You run through the zoo which I've heard is nice. It's put on by multirace and i think that they do a nice job. Oh and if it's like last year you get the swim cap with a shark fin on top. That's a keeper.

My race report: http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=233763

The swim was good. I was one of a few people not in a wetsuit, but it was barely wetsuit legal.

The run from T1 to the bike mount was rocky, and the run from the bike dismount to T2 was rocky. I scouted it out and decided not to clip my shoes in and run barefoot. The rocky run also managed to shift my sensor that read my speed, because my bike was bouncing all over the place! Apparently that happened to a few people. The bike was wide open though!

The run through the zoo is cool, but the zoo is OPEN, so there are people loitering around in your way. After the zoo, you run through grass and a parking lot. In the parking lot, people were cheering you on. I had heard such amazing things about the run that I was a bit disappointed... it's a great run but doesn't deserve the hype. If my expectations were a bit lower, I would have been really impressed. I do have a race picture with an elephant!

zoo

Last year, someone threw thumb tacks on the bike course. The race director got word of it and sent out at least a dozen additional SAG vehicles. Dont' forget your spares!

The race was near flawless from an orginizational standpoint, and support on the course was excellent.

This will be my 3rd year racing the course.    Last year I made the mistake of doing the Miami 70.3 race in downtown Miami instead and really regretted it.   This is no doubt a HIM PR course.  Bike is a bit short of 56 (most have it @ 54).    The swim is in clean lake and temp is perfect for non-wetsuit legal.  Every year they find a way to make it legal, but I would overheat for sure.   The Bike is a very flat course, but the wind can make or break the day.   If it is light wind, look out for big speed, but if wind is what it was a few years ago you will have gusts of 30 mph to deal with.   Road conditions are all pretty smooth.   Only complaint is that some of course is open to traffic and just need to use common sense.   I like the run, but to be honest, I have been so spent by this part of race I could care less about the animals.  I would say only about 1/4 of the run is through the actual zoo and the rest are on paths and roads.   Overall, the race is very well organized and worth the entry fee.   If you have family joining you this zoo at least provides some entertainment....

raced both.  to add to prior comments.  its a good race.  if racing in miami one of the good races to do.  personal suggestion is to do the international distance.  this is personal preference since i absolutely despise loops.  2 loop swim, 2 loop bike, 2 look run....

HIM distance or close to it, is just ok.  the swim is good, the bike is fast, the run is in no shade.  last year the weather was PERFECT.  we just had a cold front the prior week to race so it really cooled of things nicely.  there was virtually no wind, maybe 3-4 mph at start of race. just an FYI most the top AGers were in the 24-25 mph on the bike so it tells you how fast the course is.  there is a bit of drafting so get used to it.

2 yrs ago there was 20-25 mph wind with gusts of 30mph.  with wind 34-36mph on the bike, into the wind 14-16mph.

i loved the fact that the race director actually lets 30-34 & 35-39 in first 2 waves which makes absolute sense.

Hey Guys

I have been racing the Miami Man for many years...since 2005...and...helped as volunteer at the Water Station in the Bike Course in 2004...and....racing for 3rd time the 1/2 Iron distance this year....

It's my local Race...living in the Redlands area...the Bike Course is my back yard...I have been helping the people of MultiRace since 2004...in special in the Bike Course...marking...placing the signs, etc...etc...

Excellent Race...very well run and organized...safe Courses...plain of water stations...full volunteers... and...the best Swag Race Packages...Awesome Awards and Finisher Medals....Love this Race....!!!!

The Swimming is very nice...a very clean crystal lake...you can see the bottom of the lake...the Bike is a flat and fast course...and...the run...it's a very fun run through a mix of paved / dirty trails in the Metro Zoo of Miami and part of the Larry & Penny T. Park...

Cardenas - My friend...I can't believe that You didn't see the animals...Yeah I know You were too focused on your brick Garmin and you didn't pay attention of them...LOL....
Believe me...For all of you racing for first time this Event...the Run Course is very fun...You will see the lions, tigers, zebras, giraffes, monkeys, gorillas, antelopes, etc...etc....and...the huges elephantes...BTW....smile...cuz...the photographer will be there taking pics of you with the background of the elephants....

Trix - You are right...the Bike Course is flat but can be challenging with the winds...You are very lucky to be in the first waves...cuz...by the time I'm leaving with my bike the winds usually pick-up a lot...and...2 years ago was brutal...we had strong gusty winds at more than +35 mph...and..still I finished my Race in 6hr05m...Did you imagine how I could do it without those winds??? But this year I will start in the 1st Wave and have the advantages of you guys usually have...
The winds usually come from NEE...that means...you will need to safe some energy to go back to Transition...in special the last 11 miles...cuz...You will need to fight against the headwinds/crosswinds...
And be aware about some packs of drafters...in special...those competitives AG 30-34 and AG 35-39...saw big groups last year...

ratherbeswimming - Yeap You are right...some stupid people tryed to sabotage the Bike Course tossing thump tacks...Grrrrrrr...and...I was one of the lucky one with a flat tire...that costed me 23 minutes of my time...but....they couldn't stop me...cuz...even...the cirsunstances I finished the Race and it was not too bad...in 6hrs23m...and...Thanks Godness the Race Director sent some of his crew with mechanics to help people that had more than 1 flat....

Also...If You have the chance to ride the Bike Course...We already started the Miami Man Bike Rides (Orientation/Training) as usual every year...and...we will have the 2nd one this Weekend...and...then during the month of October and the Weekend before Race...every Sunday...Paul Kvedara from Hammerhead Tri Club and we (My Buddy and me) will be leading 2 groups....and...Everybody is welcome to join us...I will post here every Ride...!!!

Good Luck to Everybody....!!!!

Velorider,

Thanks for all the good information about the race.  This will be my first HM and I'm a bit nervous, but also stoked about it!  I've done a number of the multirace events, so I know they put on a nice race, but it is always nice to hear all the good things from someone who has actually done the particular race.
