Subject: HIM Finisher!!...it definately is all about the bike

Finished my first 70.3 yesterday, and pretty psyched since I had just started about a year ago tri-specific training..... so all in all it went well, a battle yes, but I finished.

But it leads me to the bike.  I will get a race report up for those looking to do the race.  My time was off about 30 min from where I projected.  This was because it was a very hilly course both bike and run and due to my training being on mostly flat land (convenient since I , like most, juggle work family etc and difficult to get to hilly training sites) , the hills really took there toll on me so my bike split was about 15-20 off what would be good for me.

Most would ask how the run was.  It was pretty good for me.  No death march per se.  The first loop was slower pace but no walking, on the second loop other than about 4 hills that brought me to a stop I ran slowly the rest...so all in all for someone with comparatively less training and my first time cant complain.

I learned on thie board but learned it first hand yesterday that if you can have a good bike you will most likely have a good race , time-wise.

Looking at it honestly, I learned I need to log many more hours in the saddle, work those hills, and do more longer rides so I can get faster.

Thanks for listening, I am aware 99% of this is blatanlty obvious to all of you since you have much more experience than I.....but I am a finisher!!

I'm not sure if you mean that to have a faster total HIM time, you need to have a fast bike split, or that having a faster bike split = a good HIM time.  If the latter then I disagree, if the former then I agree.

Congrats on completing your first HIM.

Hey congratulations FELTGood!!! It is such a satisfying feeling finishing that long race, it is a great learning experience for sure. Good luck on your next, I'm sure you'll meet or beet your goal just with having this first experience to go by.

Sweet.  Great job!  And I, like you, will be putting in some T.I.T.S this winter... my HIM bike split was not what I was hoping for either.  Looking forward to the RR.

I did the mightyman olympic (same course, one loop only).  The bike was hilly but fun IMO.  I can't imagine doing that run twice.  Good job!

tall vinny, I thought it was a good idea to have bothe races at once.....not sure if you remember on the run course after murder hill when the oly went straight and the half turned left, well that was "the Pits" and it felt like you ran into a pit and had to run out...ouch.....the photographer was taking pictures when we came up it, and i told her "i look better running down the hill than up!" lol..

Congrats!!!

I took the same thing away from these forums as you.  Work on the bike and then do some more on the bike, and I believe it paid off.  Not that you can ignore the other two disciplines, but a strong bike sets you up for the run.

Congrats! Did you decide to push it on the bike or keep it easy? Was your run affected more from the bike or the hills?

thanks

From gathering info from many of you I decided to back my MPH to about 18, I had averaged 20 for an oly earlier in the year on nearly the same course, but I was just concerned with finishing etc this time so I did not want the "death march"

So yes I did try to take it easy on the bike, figuring I would finish the bike aroun 3 hrs but due to the hills it really slowed my down and since my hill training was lacking it took its toll on my legs.

I think my run was affected more from the hills than the mileage...even though I had to walk a little in the race I did run about 95% of it.....in training I had run off the bike doing the distance and felt and granted I didnt do a 1.2 mile swim before hand in traing but my legs felt great in training, so I think if I was doing a flatter race I would have knocked aroun 20 min on my bike and 10-15 on my run...but that is pure speculation

Congrats.

I have my first two next year.  The death march is my concern.

Recently did my first HIM as well (Loved it!  Orangeman), and yes, it is all about the bike.  Cervelos are much faster than the other bikes.

Then again, there were quite a number of people in my age group that took me for 10 min on the bike, but I took 20 min back from them on the run.

Congratulations man!  I know what you mean about T.I.T.S.  I'm racing in my first Oly this weekend and it's going to be a hilly course (total of ~3000 feet @ ~5% in 3 ascents).  Right after the swim is going to be a 7 mile climb!  Did some heat training for the course last Saturday (it was 80-90F) and it was grueling to say the least.  Anyways, I'm happy hear you finished your 1st HIM!  *highfive* =)

Congratulations.  And good job on a successful race.  You were asking a lot of questions, and it sounds like you incorporated the advice you were given well.

That being said...it is not all about the bike.  It's just as much about the run

Great job. Congrats on the execusion. and yes hills will take a bit out of you..... if you did what you thought you were able to, and then tried to do it on hills... my prediction is that you would have blown up on the run. Just a guess. But that is really awsome. Sounds like you did as much as you could for the whole thing and finished with a strong run. 95% is much better, and much more pleasant than my 50%.
