Expert 1037 Portland, OR | Subject: Crazy Limitations on Vacation Destinations I know there are a LOT of vacation threads that get posted on here, but this one is going to have some different limitations...I think...and that makes it difficult for me. First, hubs and I want to go somewhere to celebrate me graduating law school in May (woo!). So it has to be FUN. Gosh darn it, once I'm done with this 3 years of insanity, I want to go nuts. Usually I opt for more outdoorsy-type stuff, but... (which leads me to 2) Second, it has to have a lot of different options because we want to bring our families (his mom and possibly brother, and my parents and brother) -- NONE of which would bite if we said we wanted to go camping, hiking, etc. No national parks (this time!). Third, it has to be a relatively short get-away. We won't have a full week to go, maybe 3-5 days, so it would probably have to be domestic, as well. Fourth, and this is the biggie because I know what the first instincts are for short fun vacations like this...it CANNOT be Vegas or Atlantic City, or a similar place with readily accessible casinos. So, honestly, I had to at least try asking COJ since I have zero ideas. And you guys rock, so why not! Thanks all! |

Pro 4189 Pittsburgh, my heart is in Glasgow | Subject: RE: Crazy Limitations on Vacation Destinations Why not go to say, Southern California somewhere? San Francisco? There's a load of cultural things to do, AWESOME food, and you and hubs can go and do what you want and they can do what they want and you can meet up for dinner. Or go somewhere where you're halfway to the beach but still in a city... days at the beach, evenings in the city, ta daaaaa. |

Master 2946 Centennial, CO | Subject: RE: Crazy Limitations on Vacation Destinations Disneyland or World... Or San Diego (Sea World, Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Legoland). Just got back from Disneyland, and they treat you right. In 3 days you can have a whirlwind of fun and excitement and it keeps you moving. Or... Maybe South Dakota (mount rushmore). Philadelphia has museums, zoos, historical sites. NY has broadway. O.k. that's all I've got. |

Master 2083 Houston, TX | Subject: RE: Crazy Limitations on Vacation Destinations 2 thoughts come to mind:
1) everything you're saying kind of points to an all inclusive beach resort vacation (anywhere but mexico). I wouldn't do mexico with the state of affairs down there right now, but if you're brave enough, then it's an option. Bahamas would be my first recommendation, then one of the British virgin islands, then maybe the Dominican Republic. they are cheap, easy, and have a lot of options for entertainment generally speaking. 2) Catalina Island is my second suggestion. 3) this on is a little bit of a head scratcher, but it's close to you and I HEARD (never done it) that it is fun. Chicago. A friend of mine that likes to travel, has told me that if you want to do a CITY for a vacation that #1 is probably Washington D.C., #2 is probably New york and # 3 is Chicago. they have all the arts, all the sports, a ton of restaurants and is on the great lakes with various activities (kayaking through the middle of downtown was one that caught my attention). |

Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: RE: Crazy Limitations on Vacation Destinations Is a cruise an option (casino limitation may be a factor)? A short one with a few stops so that those that are inclined can sit on a beach while others go on a trek, sightseeing, etc. We did one last year for my parents 50th anniversary and it did offer something for nearly everyone in our group of 11. |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Crazy Limitations on Vacation Destinations FoggyGoggles - 2011-10-27 2:53 PM Austin, TX - Entertainment, tons of hiking / biking trails, beautiful country and great weather\ I was just there last weekend and there is just too much traffic for that size of town! I was really surprised. The downtown area was definitely fun though. I would do a California vacation of some sort - there would be beach time, wine tastings, and opportunities for runs/hikes for those who wanted to. |

Master 2500 Crab Cake City | Subject: RE: Crazy Limitations on Vacation Destinations I would say that it will probably get cold up where you live relatively soon so why not go somewhere warm for a few days?? I highly highly recommend an all inclusive resort in Punta Cana, DR. I had the best time when I went there and the weather is amazing. Also, you can bring your family and you can still go nuts without having to worry about transportation and figuring out where to go. Most of the resorts have several restaurants and bars as well as swim up bars. I know I found it very easy to party and unwind without ever having to leave the resort. You can always get package deals really cheap per person too. I think being able to eat whereever, whenever without having to worry about paying or tipping anyone is the ultimate convience on vacation. Congrats on Law School, you deserve a nice trip for all your hard work. Let us know where you decide. |

Go to the DELLS!!! I say this half in jest because I know you are in WI however: - You have tons of outdoors stuff in the Dells. Zip-lining, Skiing, Canoeing, boating, hiking & top notch golf. There are some great roads to ride as well. - Some excellent restaurants that are as good as most in any big city. - You didn't mention if the families have younger kids but there are tons of waterparks (indoor & out, mini-golf, rollercoaster, etc etc. - There is a nice casino close - if someone has the urge - Last but not least - you can scout out the Rev3 half-iron course in advance for COJ! |

Pro 5011 Twin Cities | Subject: RE: Crazy Limitations on Vacation Destinations What about something like a resort on the North Shore or some such? Or renting a cabin/house in an area like Bayfield or Grand Marais or Lutsen or someplace similar? Many of those kinds of places are close enough for hiking, MTB, that sort of stuff...but also conveneinet for folks who want to hang out at a pool or spa or go shopping or whatever. ETA: We typically rent a house/cabin every year on a lake somewhere within about 2-6 hours from here. Whole family goes--my in-laws and their four kids, and all teh spouses and children. Everyone likes different stuff (although we all like drinking...), so people sort of mix and match interests. Edited by mmrocker13 2011-10-27 4:32 PM |

Champion 6627 Rochester Hills, Michigan | Subject: RE: Crazy Limitations on Vacation Destinations Another thought might be the Miami area...there's a beach, golf, tennis, day trip to disney (<1hr), cape canaveral, deep sea fishin if you're so inclined at islamorada, outdoorsy stuff (a friend of mine rented a sea kayak and paddled around biscane bay, and was hanging with the dolphins), plus south beach nightlife which requires absolutely no effort to go nuts. The weather is great in April (above, say Jacksonville, you're at risk in april for beach weather), it's a 2:15 flight from Chicago direct. EZ Peasy. |

Master 5557 , California | Subject: RE: Crazy Limitations on Vacation Destinations I'd also suggest the Northeast. Boston, NYC, whatever. There is so much to do and everything is a very short distance away. You could go to sporting events, see a show on Broadway, take a boat ride, get tickets to the Letterman show, find any kind of food you could imagine... the list goes on. Figure out where you'd like to stay then plan ahead for a few of those events. |

Champion 16151 Checkin' out the podium girls | Subject: RE: Crazy Limitations on Vacation Destinations Didn't say if airfare was in your budget or plans. Drive vacation could be Toronto. Lots of shows, museums, it's intertnational and Niagara Falls or Montreal are driveable from there. If flying, I love So Cal vacation. Great people and things to see and do. San Diego is a great destination. BTW: I use Hotwire for hotels and am rarely let down. Great pricing and great locations. |
