Total Time = 2h 52m 10s
Overall Rank = 2021/3590
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 288/358
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5am and had some porridge oats and a coffee, Allison dropped me off at transition and then I went over to the surf club and sipped on water and chilled out.
Had a cup of Endura at the swim start.
Event warmup:

Did a few minutes of swimming and watched the elites race.
Swim
  • 29m 13s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 57s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was a good swim for me but I slipped into my old ocean swim mode and didn't leave much in the tank for getting out on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Relax more and just get the swim done in the most efficient manner rather than racing it
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

I decided to run with my bike shoes on rather than attaching them to the bike and this went well
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 23m
  • 40 kms
  • 28.92 km/hr
Comments:

I'm not sure what went wrong on the bike!!! I just didn't get into it and felt tired going up the hill and never really picked up; I was convinced I had a flat and the front wheel seemed to be wobbling but I couldn't find anything wrong with it after...!
What would you do differently?:

Train harder, maybe back off a bit on the swim
Transition 2
  • 03m
Comments:

Quick transition and got shoes on easily with new laces
What would you do differently?:

Slip out of shoes whilst on bike
Run
  • 53m 44s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 22s  min/km
Comments:

I felt much happier to be off the bike and settled into a 5min pace quite easily, I made an effort to steady myself but kept creeping up into a faster pace. By the 4kn mark it was really hot and humid and the drink stations were doing a great job spraying everyone down but I felt sapped and the rest of the run was a bit of an ordeal.
I was hoping to step up the pace from the 7kmm mark but didn't have any kick so just jogged along to the finish. Saw the kids on the bridge just before the finish line which was great!!!
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I just wasn't that fit this time due to lack of running during the last couple of months
Post race
Warm down:

They had cold showers to walk under after the finish line which was great and then I had a quick swim.
Drank lots of Endura and had some watermelon and oranges.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I didn't feel as fit as I normally would before an event and I think my bike preparation didn't work; I was quite fit a few weeks ago and did the tri course with a friend and felt strong but I wasn't sure how to get ready and so used the final 3 weeks from Joe Friels book. It just didn't work for me and I think I would have been better sticking to the routine that was working for me.
I felt that his 3 week taper allowed me to lose endurance. My lack of running didn't help but it was the bike leg that let me down.
I was a bit disappointed at first with my time but on reflection it wasn't a bad performance considering my recent knee problems.
I seem to do better with a fully structured training program and so I'll look for a good one to use in the 12 weeks leading up to Mooloolaba.
Another good thing is that my 2 youngest kids LOVED doing the kids tri on Saturday and have already said they want to do another one!

Event comments:

This is a fantastic event and amazingly well organised. The whole town gets involved and there's a real festival atmosphere.
Definitely an event to do every year if you can get in.

Glad you had a good race. The fact the knee wasn't an issue is great news!  On to that 12 week structured program.

Great race David.

I've done the same thing on the bike before in a race, I get of the bike, sure I have a flat tire, and it's fine.  Not sure why that happens.

Sorry about the overall feeling out on course but you got the job done and your knee held up.  And it's the first race of the season so you got plenty to build on.  Looking forward to hearing about the next race and all the improvement!  Your kids' pics were great!

Had to add: how did you manage 3:00 transitions each time (I think will call you MR. 3 minute). That was a very well done run, especially after a disappointing bike. Way to regain your focus.
