now that we're at the end of the year, my husband and i are reviewing our monthly and yearly budget too see how much we strayed (which was quite a bit, sad to say). part of the unplanned expenses were the multitude of races i did (nearly $700 on race fees - i got some back in store credit for being on a team, but still!), and some of the gear i acquired (like a new wetsuit). next year i will be traveling out of state for two races, which means more expense...so to offset that, i'll be doing fewer races next year and am working on setting a reasonable overall budget. curious how much each of you spend each year on racing and gear. do you budget? if so, how much do you set aside?

I don't budget specifically for my racing but I would guess I easily spent $1000+ this season once I consider race fees, hotels, and gas.  As for new gear, I just dropped $800 on race wheels last month   I know that I have a certain amount of "disposable" income each month and basically just ration it out to whatever my current priorities happen to be.  If I know I have a race coming up that requires an overnight then I'm planning for it a couple weeks in advance to make sure I have the extra cash I'll need.  As for race fees...I try to space out my registrations as evenly as possible.  I've already started registering for my 2006 races so that I never have to pay up for more than 1 race every month or so.

Fortunately, next year I'll be "saving" money since there will be no new bike , trainer, HR monitor or wetsuit which I acquired this season (along with runing/biking shorts, shirts, etc.).

But I'm already @$400 for 3 races I'm definately doing.  Toss in about 3 pair of new running shoes and "consumables" (gels, drinks, Bodyglide, etc.) and I'm already near $1000.  So I went with $1000+ because I know there will be other things that come up.  I'm sure I could pretty quickly get to $2000+ (especially if I decide to get some race wheels ).

I don't know what I am going to do next season. I have 3 races on my schedule:

  • Ralph's Half IM - $210
  • IMCDA - $ 450
  • Virginia Double Iron - $400

Only one of these races is local. Then add in that Happycow will be doing her first full season of racing and I think she I will need another job

Wow, you guys are scaring me now.  I would have thoguht I spent less than $300 on races, but I forgot about toys, hotels, travle, etc.

I'm planning at least 2 out of state races, possibly one international next year, so there's about $1500 in airfare alone!  Plus my new bike, night lights for my mtn bike, bike shoes, feedign myself...

Depends in large part on how you slice it up and classify expenses. My wife and I, for example, are doing the Las Vegas Marathon in December, thus far airfare, hotel and race fees have topped over $1200 . But this is also a mini-vacation for the two of us, as we have done for the past few years, incorporating a trip with a race (or vice versa). Racing and training are a lifestyle, so how do you separate lifestyle expenses from racing expenses?

I've only just started triathlon training but b4 that I trained mostly in boxing/muay thai. One of the biggest differences between the 2 sports I find is that unlike boxing, the more money u spend on tri equipement the better ur performance is. With boxing, I'd step into the ring and it was all me after that. Now with tri training; bike maintenance, clipless pedals, wetsuit, proper running shoes, all these things add up in price AND affect my performance.

Don't get me wrong - physical conditioning is still the number one factor in terms of performance in a tri, but if u take 2 equally conditioned athletes and one's riding a lightweight, properly fitted tri bike and the other is riding a $100 mountain bike from Wal-Mart - it makes a big difference

(Excuse me, I think I heard someone drop some change..)

I have everything I need, but the ongoing costs will still be huge; I'll probably get some new clothing just because it looks cool; I'll be spending maybe $400/yr on nutrition (Heed, Recoverite, Endurolytes, etc); of course I renewed my family fitness club membership ($500); I'm doing a masters swim class ($26 every 6 weeks or so); coaching is $720 for 9 months; new shoes ($100) every 300-500 miles; tires, tubes; swim suits and goggles as they need replacing; none of this takes into account race fees, travel and lodging, as others have pointed out. And with all the showers I take, I don't even want to think about hair gel!

i've pretty much tracked things i wouldn't have purchased if i wasn't racing. there are some things i've had a hard time seperating. the wetsuit and the tri suit are easy, as are race fees. the jogging stroller, however, gets daily use as much as for training. the bike is also a multi-use item, but since i bought it mainly for training for and racing tris, i count it among my racing expenses. travel for the 1/2 IM next year is a tri expense, but travel and hotel for the all-girl davis family reunion/triathlon extravaganza at danskin next year is for more than just a racing expense (and i'm hoping some of that gets split 5 ways anyway). nutrition is also a bit grey, since there are some things, like protein powder, that i used before i was activily training, but which i use more of now that i am training. there are also the one time costs (bike, wetsuit, tri suit) that may effect the budget of one season but not the next, as compared to on going costs (USAT membership, running shoes, etc.).

sorry, jim! the truth hurts sometimes, eh? figuring out our monthly expenses was just as much of a downer...but it makes me feel better when i know where all the $$$ is going. i was shocked at how much i spent on race fees this year. at least i raised more than i spent, plus got some of it back in the shape of a new helmet, arm warmers, and a water bottle!

autumn - 2005-10-27 2:32 PM . there are also the one time costs (bike, wetsuit, tri suit) that may effect the budget of one season but not the next, as compared to on going costs (USAT membership, running shoes, etc.).

From an accounting standpoint, you should pro rate (depreciate) these items over their useful life, for instance a $1,500 bike used over, say, five seasons would have a $300 impact on the annual budget.

First of all...I don't believe anyone who says they've already bought all the equipment and that won't be an issue for next year's budget...there is always more gear to buy.

I would say $2000+ for a season is easily the number for me.

Six tri's (plus two marathons and a 1/2 mary) at an average of about $90 per. $540
Did I menton my wife also does them so add 4 more race fees. $360
Travel $500-1000 (do at least three out of the area)
gear $500-1000
Doctor's co-pay and prescriptions $100-200 (ITB, Tendonitis, wife hade hernia operation)

But you know what...I really enjoy the sport, my wife enjoys it and our kids look forward to the three summer "vacations". If I enjoy the race (and I haven't done one yet that I didn't enjoy) I don't sweat the cost (to a point).

Autumn, if it gets to be a downer, refer back to those "before" and "after" pictures of yourself..and think of how well spent it was!

I spent about $1000 on two bikes this year, and $360 for race fees (I even picked a race series in Clermont because it was cheap!). I've used hotel points to stay for two races, and stayed with friends for another one. One cool thing is that now that I'm bike commuting, I save enough on gas to justify some of the bike expenses.

I think I broke even.

Prior to this year, I did no exercise of any kind. Then, I bought some running shoes, shorts, and shirts. Running wasn't enough, so I decided to venture to triathlons. Since I already was running, that gear doesn't add up in my triathlon budget.

Once I got a cheap $40 19 year old 105 equipped Schwinn, I started occasionally commuting to work which saves me $6 per day in gas costs (25 mi round trip, plus lunch). I never really had an interest in road cycling and would have not ever commuted to work if it not for triathlon training.

I spent another $80 or so on helmet/tires/tubes/multi-tool/etc, so I estimate my total $$ spent on the bike is $120.

I guess I haven't commuted enough to cover the $120, but I will before the year is up

I entered 2 tri's, both of which I wore already-owned soccer shorts and dri-fit tee.

Now that I know the bug has bit, I bought some clearance tri-shorts and will get a tri-top sometime before next season. I'm also looking into a bike trainer (don't like the cold at all), clipless pedals/shoes, and may see a newer bike before 2006 ends.

Edit: I guess I missed the entry fees + USAT which totaled $120

very true! if i wasn't racing, i'd probably be on anti-depressants, in therapy, and wanting a tummy tuck. racing is much cheaper!

(not that there's anything wrong with anti-depressants, therapy, or tummy tucks. i know people who have experience with all of the above. i'm just happy that racing has done the trick for me)

Hey, welcome to BT! I came from Muay Thai as well, though I never competed.

Muay Thai expenses? Hmm... got my mom to buy me my gloves for my birthday present one year. Jump rope? maybe $7. hand wraps, $5 or $6 a couple of times. Muay Thai shorts, $15; lessons, most recently, $30/month. So the only real expense was the lessons. Gear, etc. -- very little.

Tri expenses? Already had the gym membership, so... bike and starter gear, $550; tri shorts, $30; running shoes, $75; entry fee to a local bike ride a few weeks before my first race, $35; first race, about $80?; pedals and shoes, $150?; new tire and related expenses when I melted one, $120; cycle socks, $8; new swim cap and goggles, $20; second race, maybe $60?; hotel for that race, $60; developing film, $10; decent sportsbra $30.

Total first season, for a confirmed cheapskate with NO HRM or even spedometer on my hybrid bike, who's never gotten any professional coaching, whose running shirt was a gift from sis, who takes a perverse pride in working out in clothes that DON'T match, who did only 2 races, including one about an hour's drive from my house... over $1200. That doesn't count extra food, bottled water, Gatorade, or gas to and from said races.

And I'll probably spend more next year. Sigh.

Just reading this thread gives me a sinking feeling ... I don't want to even start thinking about total expenses per season. I can only deduce that if the sport wasn't so addictive to justify the expense NO one would do it.
