Due to my wife's work schedule (she's a RN) I cannot workout until 8:30 or so at night 3 (or 4) days a week. Will working out this late (and close to bedtime) have a negative effect on me?

Might be hard to sleep once you get the adrenaline and endorphins flowing.

I can't workout that late, because it's too close to my bedtime (10:30 or 11). I've always had trouble staying asleep if I work out after 7:30 or so. I do find, however, that if I work out really hard during an evening workout, I'm exhausted and have no trouble.

Oh, and be sure to stretch good. Late day workouts also tend to make my muscles stiff.

I do two workouts a week in the evening (both indoor trainer rides). If I'm lucky I can do them while the wife and kids eat. But if she is wiped out and needs help then I'll make the dinner and get everything set up and then go ride. The worst case is I get started after putting the kids to bed around 8:00-ish.

When I'm done, as bear said, I need a good hour or two to wind down before going to bed. That usually means I would end up going to sleep around 11:00-ish, which is not too far off when I usually go to bed. But it is definitely not my preferred ride at 6:30 and be done before 8:00.

It's entirely possible, but I would really look to see if fitting in morning sessions before work would be a better and/or more viable solution.

All my workouts during the week are in the evening. In general, I haven't had a problem going to sleep afterwards. I agree with the stretching, though. Stiffness and tightness has kept me up at night, but for me, that's not necessarily an effect of late night workouts. It usually happens after a long run, regardless of what time of day I ran.

I guess the answer is that everyone is different and you should just try it and see how your body responds.

Another thing I wonder about about late night workouts is whether you will burn as many calories after the workout when compared to working out in the morning. I don't know the answer to that.

Also, if you're running or riding on the road that late, make sure you're visible with reflective clothes and/or lighting.

As others have stated, you are probably going to have to try and see how you do.  In the summertime when I have a lot more poultry to tend to, I often workout after 9p.m..  I have never had any trouble sleeping after a workout.  Then again, I don't have any trouble sleeping anytime or anywhere.  A skill I picked up in vet school when sometimes the only sleep I could grab was a couple hours in the large animal operating room recovery stall.  LOL!  Yes, I did pick one that was empty.  Even I don't think I could sleep with a horse stomping on my body.

I do almost all of my workouts at night.  I've done them as late as finishing at 9, but then I typically need at least 2 hours to wind down before I can even think about falling asleep.  You may respond differently, though.  I'd give it a try some night where I could sleep in the next morning just in case it takes you awhile to fall asleep.

Negative effect? No, unless you notice a repeated pattern of low volume of sleep as a result. As everyone mentioned above, individuals react in differently. Do the best you can in scheduling and go from there.

I'm a big fan of evening, and even late night, workouts. In grad school the school gym was open until midnight, and I used to go and workout at 11pm. Never had any negatives associated with it; but I think it particularly helps if you can get in a sauna, whirlpool, or even hot shower afterwards. Just makes you warm and tired and ready for beddy-bye time.

Yeah, the only negative effect I can think of that is exactly what Bear said. What time do you have to get up in the morning?

I don't like working out in the evening for the sole reason that I feel lathargic after working all day.  However, if it's the only choice you have, then you have to work with what you've got, right?

Apart from sleep I would also say that it is important to eat after your workout, even if it is late.  I know some people don't like to eat late at night, but if you've just done a workout your body needs fuel to repair, rebuild and grow stronger.  It doesn't have to be a meal, but it should be an enough to achieve that goal.  Some kind of recovery drink would probably do the trick nicely.

Almost all of my workouts are at night after my daughter goes to bed. It's the concesion that I made to my wife. In order to balance work, training and family. In fact I just got done with a 1 hour trainer ride. I enjoy it far more than morning or day workouts. I usually go to bed around 10:00 -11:30. It works for me. I've had no ill effects from it. For me it works fine.

Kids finally fell asleep, I'm just about to hit the treadmill for an hour.

Sometimes it's a matter of train late or don't train.

I guess "they" say that working out in the evening can make it hard to fall asleep, butI have never had that problem, whether it is a late evening/night run, swim or bike ride, even weights or strength training for that matter, I never have trouble going straight to bed afterwards.  I find it more relaxing than stimulating afterwards.

I think your body learns to adapt to whatever schedule you have...... I mix mine up some early, some lunch, some night time......just depends on my schedule for the week. My evening workouts do not effect my ability to sleep....... I would suggest if you are going to do most of your workouts in the evening, that at least once or twice on the weekend (or when you can fit it in) do an AM workout....since races are in the am it's good to have some early workouts.

You do what you can.....better to workout in the evening than not at all.......

I enjoy working out late at night after my daughter is asleep. I have a routine now and have no issue getting to sleeep at night now. I can usually be asleep within 20 minutes of getting out of the shower. A hard run at the end of the day is just what I need to get to get a good nights sleep!

like many of the others, the late evening workouts sometimes keep me from gettting to sleep in what i'd refer to as timely.........  i hate getting up super early to get in my PT or strength training, but i do or i'd never have the time to train.  good luck.

I second that thought (except I have a son). He gets put to bed about 7pm.  Then I try to get in a little cleaning in the kitchen.  About 7:30 starts a trainer ride of varying duration.  Then stretching.  Then back to the kitchen to prepare food for the next day.

With our family schedule, and until our son gets back to consistantly sleeping all night, evening workouts are all there is time for.  Once our son starts sleeping through the night again, I can get in morning workouts at least 3 days a week.

Like many here, I get in alot of training after the kiddos are in bed (8:30). I'll usually start around 9 or so and it's not uncommon to be finished stretching/cooldown/shower sometime between 10 - 11. I'm usually in bed between 11 - 12, and need to be up at 6:30 - 7. This works for me. I also like to get in a lunchtime workout so I'm not doing the night thing 6 days a week.

In the summer, I get up early and train before 7. It's just too cold (although not really this year) to have a morning routine. I'm really flexible and do not have major problems adapting to either.

I actually prefer to train at night. I have no trouble getting to sleep. I went running during the afternoon the other day and HATED it. I felt like I was going really slow.

I like to unwind with a hot bath after a workout...but a manly bath. No salts, bubbles, or Kenny G. If you're gassy, you can make it like a jacuzzi.

I like to soak in a warm bath after my evening workouts too... Helps me wind down and relax. I think like everything its a routine. Once your body gets used to it its no big deal. My body knows we eat a early dinner, play with the baby, run or bike, bath, eat again then go to bed... after a few weeks you should be able to sleep.
