Overall Rank = 1612/1770

Age Group Rank = 811/854
Pre-race routine:

got up at God awful early to drive to Tampa with Wendi (G8rsax)and meet up with all of the bt friends....ate a cliff bar and drank an Amino Vital and a Water about 2 hours before the race....
Event warmup:

walk from the hotel meeting spot to the start line....The race started about 30 minutes late we found out later because of lightning...there was a strange river that I had to keep straddling as G8rsax and Trixie did a funny little dance....lol So I stood and laughed a lot with Wendi, Rick, Trixie, Jean, Lane, Lisa waiting for the gun.....
Run
  • 2h 51m 38s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

The first 3 miles were pretty smooth other than my blood sugar being way to high and having to hit the port o lets 2 times. Thankfully the insulin and running kicked in about mile 4 and I hit a pretty good rythem by the time I got to the turn around on Davis Islands. Saw Rick and Trix as I was heading into the turn around. Apparently Jean was only a few yards back and Rick and Trixie encouraged her to catch up. Thanks to Jean (rennick) who ran with me the rest of the way. It made it much easier to have someone push me and also to encourage back. The wind and rain were heavy at times but stayed out of the puddles and really had no foot issues to speak of. Thought we were going to get blown off the bridge as we turned onto Bayshore. So the last five miles down and back on Bayshore were pretty good, took on a gel and that really got me over the hump. We saw G8rsax, it is always good to see the wife still truckin and not sick or in a lot of pain (I saw no seagulls). Saw the good Doc at the last turn around (thanks Sue for braving the cold, wind and rain) then onto the finish line not much gas left in the tank but ended up about 10 yards behind Jean on the kick. I met my goal and a PR by almost an hour.
What would you do differently?:

Start race with blood sugar at proper level and find someone to run with much earlier.
Post race
Warm down:

walk around and ate took in fluids and then walked back to the hotel for a hot shower (thanks Jean and Trixie)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

high blood sugar and time needed to properly train

Event comments:

what a great time we had the whole weekend I hope everyone had as much fun as I did. listening for the woo woo was just freaking hilarious.....

Hey Mike- great to see you and Wendi again...take care of her so she gets better! Wish I could have seen you guys out there on the course somewhere- I was out there somewhere getting passed by everyone. I think I passed like 3 people maybe the whole time! See ya at St. A in a few months- that run should be a piece of cake compared to this!

Awesome job Mike! Made my race running with you! I had a lot more fun (and probably finished alot sooner) than I would have otherwise!

Nice race, Mike, and a good PR too.  It was great to meet you finally...I enjoyed getting the chance to watch the gals be stupid and you me and Chris get to roll our eyes.  Heh. (usually the chicks are the ones rolling the eyes, no?!)?

That race ought to set you up for a great rest of the season - a good distance to cover really early in the season.  Build on it!!!  After you're done being sore, that is....
