I was nosing around looking for some events to enter and stumbled upon this 5k OWS, which sounded interesting, but check out these results...

Man! Just when I think I'm figuring this swim thing out I see this. Can people really swim this far this fast? That's a 1:11 pace for over 3 miles!

I feel like I need swimming lessons now.

It's amazing....you can tell a real swimmer once they hit the water..

The winner of Big Shoulders was about a min slower than that winner...they're former college swimmers though. I'm hoping for 1:30 (90 Min) for mine.

1:11 pace?  As in per 100?  That's about right.  At the top levels you see a lot of the triathlete's out of the water in well under an hour.

I don't know if it will help any, but whenever I get bummed about that kind of thing I remind myself that chances are I could destroy most of them in a hot dog eating contest.

That is awesome. Maybe one day I will be able to swim a 5k, let alone swim it that fast.

If you are looking for long distance swim events check out the following

3.5 miles - http://www.friendsvinp.org/swim/

5 miles - http://www.swimrace.com/coral_reef_swim_schedule.htm

I plan to struggle my way through both this year

The fact that the top swimmers are so young doesn't surprise me. I swam in high school and the volume the club swimmers do even at the age of like 8 is more than I swam in practice back then. These kids have been swimming year round, with a high yardage per week probably since about the age of 4 or 5. Unless you were one of those kids who then swam in college, it is just impossible for us mere mortals to beat them.

Definitely. When I was an age grouper, we did a 10K OW swim every summer and the fastest kids were under 2 hours. My fastest was about 2:03.

for those looking for Manhattan Island Marathon results go to

nycswim.org

They hold a bunch of open water races in the Hudson (various distances) which is great if your training for the NYC Tri.

Iv'e gone sub 1 hour 5Ks, but it really depends on the course and the currents. My fastest pace was :52 second hundreds for a 6 mile race (but the current was also 2-3 MPH which helped a lot without a current, in perfect conditions I could prob hold 1:08 pace). But I also have almost 20 years of open water experience (I did my first OWS when I was 8).

FWIW, if you are considering doing the event, I have raced some tri's with the swim in Lake Chatuge and always found the water to be quite delightful. A little muddy around the banks and clear, more or less, towards the center.

I did swam on a relay in the Beast of the East  HIM there last fall and while the water was great, fog rolled in 5 minutes into the swim making so you couldn't see more than 25 yards in front of you. Scary, but I still got second in the swim.

That is an all out sprint for me in a pool! I must be doing something wrong. I think my form is good, but it's not getting the job done. I need to find a swim clinic or something.

Any easy way to shave time off your OWS is to draft of someone slightly faster than you. When you draft you swim faster and use up to 50% less energy. Plus, then you don't have to sight as often, which can also slow you down.
