Pre-race routine:

***NOTE*** The entire set of race statistics and placements within AG are based on the splits from my watch, because my timing chip set off the mats after the race, wiping out my OFFICIAL times.

Woke up, killed the last of the Publix cinnamon rolls Lane brought me, chugged a gatorade, and walked to the start. Set up transition, put on the flip-flops I bought for the 1 mile walk to the start. Halfway there, the flip-flops tore up the top of my feet so I threw them away. $7.99 down the pooper.
Event warmup:

Bostic and I walked to the start, found Karl, Rich, Karl's sister, Jess, and stood around, caught a couple pictures, and tried not to look at the waves. The frigging chop was already in my head from teh previous day's failed swim - ugh - so I was NNNNNerVouS. Like DNS nervous. But the green caps assembled...and there I was.

On the start tape, Karl and I were at the front. Whizzed in my wetsuit during a photo op, got some inspiration, and BANG...we were off...
Swim
  • 27m 23s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got in the water, ran until waist deep. A guy in front of me started dolphining, and I walked right past him. Heh.

Let's get something straight...I HATE the chop. First OWS in big surf, and I was freaked. By the first buoy, I sat up, looking for the kayak. I was ready to DNF right friggin there. Fortunately, one wasn't around.

So I slugged it out. I had no rhythm, resorted to just breathing right...because you'd breathe one stroke and get air, one stroke you might not. I lost all 4 minutes in the first 500 yards. I probably stopped, treading water, maybe 8 times. I breaststroked around buoy 1. And I flipped over and kicked a couple times just to avoid swimming, I suppose.

After rounding the first turn, the swim got MUCH better. I got into a set stroke. At the 2nd buoy, there's a crowd trying to round the corner...and lo and behold, Karl's in front of me. We're both breaststroking due to the traffic Jam, and I bellow out "Karl Kiss, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN". He turns, give me a "hey buddy", and we hammered home.

The swim in was sheer delight, and was easy. Heh.
What would you do differently?:

Not freak out.
Transition 1
  • 04m 11s
Comments:

F'in wetsuit. It's always been a problem. But I wrestled with it for a good 2 minutes in transition. Always, always gets stuck on the ankles and calves.
What would you do differently?:

Hack the legs off that sumbitch.
Bike
  • 1h 14m 57s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.89 mile/hr
Comments:

Great ride for me, considering I hadn't ridden outside - other than this weekend - in 8 months, and hadn't seen my bike in 2 months.

Excellent nutrition - drank just the right amount, never felt thirsty or out of energy. Cornering was awesome - I passed TONS of people that don't corner well.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe practice riding my bike.
Get a tri-geometry bike (DONE) so I don't use so much hamstring.

Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

I pushed hard on the bike...and my legs didn't want to run...I could barely run in transition. I was furious with myself, and was so furious I went down the wrong slot, killing 45 seconds because I needed to backtrack and go down the right rack (I had a horrible bike rack position, right near the fencing).

From there transition went fine. No issues. Fast.
What would you do differently?:

Find my rack on the first go-round?
Run
  • 55m 12s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Smooth and easy. Straight out of transition, saw Shannon - thanks for Jockstrappin'!!!!

Ran with Karl for miles 1-3, then took off to the finish. Saw Chris at Mile 1 bringin' it home, then JamesReeves at about 2, and then all in a row - Gullah, Mike, Rich, and Jen DiCarlo. Very weird that in a sea of racers, the BT'ers were all lined up within 50 yards of one another. Hmmm.

Mile 4-6 I took off and dropped it to 8's, felt strong. Finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

Hit the run harder. I left 3 minutes on the course; BUT I had never finished a tri's last mile without walking, so I went conservative. I need more confidence in my run.
Post race
Warm down:

Finished, Cold Towel, saw Denise at the end of the finishers' chute - YEAH BON BON!!! Bostic had been finished for a while, so he pointed out the massage tent, where I got worked on for 20 minutes...

Then back to the finishers' chute to watch for more BT'ers, then moseyed over to the BT Keg. Socialized. Drank. Didn't eat. Dumb.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

* Chop in OWS (mental toughness)
* Poor bike fitness
* Confidence in the run (mental toughness)
* POOR TRANSITIONS (mental breakdown - this can be fixed)

Event comments:

Awesome race, fantastic to catch up with BT'ers. Special thanks to the fantastic Jockstraps and all the folks that coordinated various weekend events....what a great crew. Fun to race with, fun to party with, good times!!!

Heh... funny race report    Sorry about the timing chip problem.  WOuld that affect your national ranking?

I had made the same mistake of going to the wrong slot at T2.  Guess after a while people got blank out and don't know what we're doing.

Great race.  Glad you had fun.

Rick, what a great weekend.  The race was awesome and thanks for pacing me for those two miles.  The 4 minutes you lost on the run you gave to me.

Even more hilarious was hanging with you and the rest of the BT crew on the Veranda.  It was like hanging out in the frat house.  What a blast.

Great race and killer run.  Sorry about your race time getting wiped out.  We both learned a lesson that day about race chips.

Go, go godzirra!

Hi.

You'll do.

Dude, you have the killer'est t-shirts ( is that a word?  it is now ).  Awesome weekend.  Defintely have to make it over to MI to party race with ya again, or convince you to cross the lake to the wonderful midwest.

An awesome swim for someone who thought about DNF'ing it.  You're going to kick much *** this season.  And take a lot of names too.

Man, you really know how to throw the old monkey wrench into the gears, eh?  Yep, first thing I did when I bought it was to chop 4" off the bottom of my wetsuit legs, makes it a TON easier!  Do it man!!  See, that salt water ain't so bad...even though we both hate it.  Why doncha come to Cranberry and we'll let you swim in murky sludge instead!

Nice race buddy!  Dang, wish I coulda made it!

Rick it was such a pleasure to meet you this weekend. Too bad about your timing chip but if you need someone to vouch for you well...I saw you right as you were passing Hunter Kemper outbound on the run. Thanks for the good humor and for passin' out the moto to all of us who were suffering the run. Hope to race with you again.

    hey rick - great race!!

way to deal with the rough swim conditions, and still put in a good time - not where you want to be on the time, but still pretty awesome!!

waht's up with the wetsuit?? i'm sur eyou can figure something out.

wow, first time on the bike in 8 months, great job - the tri bike is gonna make the runs a LOT easier i bet. i think that's the biggest difference for me, although i feel like i'm slower on the bike, probably just not used to the tri geometry yet.

congrats on the strong finish, that's always a good way to judge if the race went according to plan.

i think you'll hit those oly goals this year, keep it up!!

    congrats!!!!!!
