What's your most valuable resource? Water? Sure, water is treated and recycled but where do all those spent chemicals go? How much more water will be needed for growing future generations? What if Colorado shut off the supply of water that heads west of the continental divide? that happen you may never worry about flushing for #1 again. Sorry, now I'm the one with questions.
I can understand that line of thought so you are saying that theoretically if we never flushed #1 that the world’s water supplies would be larger in the future? |

What "green" technology frustrates you ? I miss the urine troughs at Fenway Park. Those were no flush, and thus way ahead of their time. I don't have a problem with the waterless urinals. No problem at all. |

Is 1l of water worth having to pee lilke you're in a blue box on race day? What "green" technology frustrates you ? If you count the environmental impact from cradle to grave the Hybrid car makes no sense and other cars can get just as good gas mileage for less $. To me most of the people have Hybrids are just to say they have one. That's an urban myth. When the entire life-cycle environmental cost is computed alternative fuel cars still beat out conventional cars. Right now hybrids and plug-in electrics are about even - when an electric gets about 50% or more of it's electricity from renewables it moves ahead. And ahead of both of those are hydrogen fuel cells. Another thing -- they reduce urban smog because when they're sitting in bumper-to-bumper, stop lights, etc... the engine is completely off. I think we'll see a lot of improvement in battery technology. Internal combustion engines have almost a century of refinement behind them. Electric cars will get better. I'm talking about the current hybrid vehicles as a whole. I am a smog tech and I also worked for Toyota and other auto manufactures dealing specifically with hybrids. The life expectancy of a hybrid battery is less than that of an ICE (Internal Combustion engine) in the real world and not just what is reported. The cost to replace the battery is more expensive then replacing an ICE. From what I have seen firsthand people keep a normal ICE vehicle longer then a hybrid being that once the warrantee if up the cost of maintenance is WAY more expensive to the consumer. I have personally seen ALLOT of the high voltage batteries be replaced. Once out they are not being recycled or reused in some other way were the ICE's are being recycled or reused. As for SMOG it is created in an ICE when the temperatures in the cylinder head exceed 2500° and Nitrogen oxide (NOx) is created. When NOx mixes with sunlight in the atmosphere SMOG is created. Newer vehicle produce zero NOx while at idle so no smog. Hybrids mix a small ICE with an electronic motor to achieve an environmentally friendly vehicle for while at an idle or below 20 mph. The catch is Hybrids are heavier than their counterparts and mixed with the low power motors they have to work harder to achieve power under a heavy load like passing on the freeway for example. During these times they actually emit higher amounts of NOx then their counterparts. |

It will have the toilets you mention as well as just about any proven "green" technology available. Not only will the building be net-zero energy, it was built with many recycled materials, including old gas pipes, beatle-kill pine, reclaimed steel, as well as other recycled materials. I've visted the building and other than losing a closed office for an open work-station, I am looking forward to it. To get back to frustrations with green technology...yes, it's different and it's not what we are accustomed to. However, oil and gas supplies are limited and other energy sources need to be developed or our kids and grandkids are going to suffer for our short-sightedness. I'm willing to compromise, or be inconvenienced with developing technologies that are going to benefit future generations. If it is a bacterial breeding ground this is a little more than being inconvenienced it is an issue, if you don't believe me go back and look at the middle ages. I would also like to know how this kind of toilet help future generations? well, from what I see in most public bathrooms most guys seem to go a pretty good job getting their whiz on the floor as well as the toity. So much for bacteria getting flushed down... I agree with that, it's even worse at my work then a normal gas station bathroom and that fact perplexes me. Ok so back to my question how does that kind of urinal help future generations compared to a normal low flow automatic urinal?
The propaganda on the little sticker above our urinals says that every "no flush" urinal saves 40,000 gallons of water per year. That figure seems high to me, but i suppose it is highly dependent on the location of the bathroom. That's not insignificant. |

But if you allow it to sit in a warm environment concentrating in pee particles, I sure would think bacteria find those corpuscles a tasty treat. I think possibly the check valves in the urinals are faulty. Or these need more thorough cleaning than conventional ones. |

And frankly, WITH flushing, you dilute the acid, therefore making it worse. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I dislike the following "green" items... Low flush toilets. In an effort to save water, nothing goes down. Thus you end up flushing more than once, and the water saving feature is gone. Shower heads that have a dribble of water coming out of them. How's a girl to get all the shampoo and conditioner out of her hair with a dribble of water with no pressure? Air dryers for the hands, versus paper towels. Who has the time to stand there 15 minutes trying to dry your hands? |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hate the light a cfl bulb gives off. LED lights are not much better, but use much less energy. Too bad they are so expensive initially. Electric cars baffle me in areas where there are brownouts. The local power company offers to put a thermostat in your house that will cut the air conditioner or electric heat of at certain times each day for a small discount. If this is even a though, I can't imagine what things will be like once electric cars are more widespread.Zero water urinals don't bother me. I tell my mifepristone I am protecting the environment when I pee in the yard. I do it a lot. Especially if I am drinking. |
