Fred D - 2012-01-16 4:00 PM  Perception is bigger than reality.

Absolutely. The P4 according to the smartest people I know is still the fastest bike right now.

The P5 will be faster. But, as you mentioned, perception is everything. If people think a Specialized Shiv is more better....a wind tunnel diagram ain't gonna sway them. They need to put something out that looks and feels top notch...and that might include making it very expensive. That's part of the perception.....

You really think a Ferrari costs 10x more than a BMW M3? No, but part of the allure, is the knowledge that you know that they know what you paid for it.

Dusty the only true knock I've heard on the P4 is that there is a degree of difficulty to fit some people on them, especially people who are less flexible.

Am I wrong on this or is this just perception?

Fit on the P4 is the same as the P3, which is to say it's a "long and short" bike which is not meant for everyone, and can be a challenge for shorter torso riders. However the use of a standard steerer tube and stem along with the flexibility of using any aero bar corrects for a lot of fit issues.

These are not options with some of the other high-end tri bikes with integrated front ends.

The Speed Concept isn't bad from a fitting standpoint, but a pain in the butt to dismantle and put back together again when traveling.

Traveling with the P4 hasn't been a problem, but the lack of clearance for the rear brake limits your wheel choices. I have/had wheels that wouldn't fit mine.

I'm curious to see what the stack and reach is for the P5, and how much adjustability is in the front-end. Again, those were matters they planned on addressing, but we'll have to see how well they did. The use of hydraulics allows them to hide the hose in ways a cable can't be hidden, but does pose some other possible issues with bleeding the lines.

As for the price tags. Again we'll have to wait and see. As with the R3/R5 and the different versions of the S5, expect to see different versions of the P5. I doubt the high-end version will be out of line with other high-end TT bikes.

Fred D - 2012-01-16 4:28 PM Other knock is difficulty is travel, mainly assemby as well. Although I've heard the speed concept is even worse? Again asking.

Scott touched on the fit issues with a P4....

I would say the P4 is no more of a hassle than any other TT bike. I took mine to Hawaii for the 70.3 and it was easy as pie. My new Shiv TT has me a little worried because its integrated front end is just a little funky. I'm sure once I do it, I'll figure it out.

I honestly don't find the SC that difficult to disassemble and reassemble.  It's different from other bikes, so the first time was a chore.  But once you see how to do it, it isn't hard (IMHO), no more so than my previous bike (Orbea).

Agreed... I took my P4 to Australia, nothing special about it.  If needed, adjust the rear brake for your race wheels before you leave on your trip, but otherwise it's all straightforward.

Im going to buy one just so people who know nothing about Triathlon think I'm cool. Hang it up on the wall and when someone asks me about it I'll tell them 'oh...cost me about $8000 but I only race it once a year for 'special' races cause its 5 seconds faster in the half Ironman. Which is huge because I could finish 295th in stead of 296th. In the meantime I ride my Felt b12".

standard stem is the only reason I'm able to fit on a P4 with my short torso. I don't think I'll upgrade even if I could fit the P5. It's a cool bike, but I have a P3 and a P4. The difference between the two is less than a good day vs a bady day. Meaning, it's so small I don't its barely noticeable. I'd be better off improving the engine at this point.

Fred D - 2012-01-17 7:26 AM All this talk about super bikes is making my wallet itchy. Damn you for posting this and damn Cervelo, specialized and trek for doing this to me. I hate you all. (just kidding....well sort of)

C'mon Fred, drink the koolaid! Support your local bike shop

It is amazing how marketing types have all this figured out, isn't it? I consider myself a rational person - I'm a scientist, after all - and yet, to paraphrase Jimmy Carter, I have looked on many women bikes with lust.

Full specs on the P5 aren't out until tomorrow, want to bet they're still holding some things back?

I'll admit, I want.   maybe I'll wait. I like even numbers. When is the P6 coming out? and will it have a turbo boost?

It certainly has all the current aero goodies.

Kamm tail - check

Integrated stem (looks like w/ aero foil like the ventus at the back) - check

Pretty interesting where all all the tubes meet being "squared" off. I'd like to see more of the front an rear brake, as well as the fork.

Are those 3T brake levers for Di2?

The brake levers are Magura hydraulic. It looks to me like all of the trailing edges are airfoil. I don't see where they're using a kamm tail design. scott

you may be right about the kamm, it does look like it is behind the seatpost in the first picture though.

So, I take it the Magura lever's do NOT have the buttons for Di2? Seems like a pretty poor trade off if not as that's one of the hottest points of a Di2 TT setup

I stand corrected. The seatpost does have a Kamm Tail. It's not much of one, but it's definitely there.

Good eye.

Sort of, but soon after the SC and Shiv stole the show, at least from a marketing POV.

Kind of reminds me of discussions on whether Batman is really a superhero or not.

I want the model with the flux capacitor. That way I can just meet myself at the finish line later.

Hehe. I'm not actually saying either one isn't super, just saying that it's been discussed.
