Subject: Pool smell

So I swim in the mornings after work.  Shower before and after I swim, long hot soapy shower afterwards.  Love those long hot showers before bed...anyways.  I wake up and I can smell the pool on me.  Then I take another shower before going into work and I smell the pool again.

Is it just the soap I am using at the pool or my nose being sensitve?  Anyone else or is it just me

Same for me. I use a swim specific shampoo and body wash, then use a scented body wash, and the next time I hit the shower the smell rises from my skin like I never even tried.  I can't smell it as much when I am dried off after my first shower, but husband says he can smell it.

Maybe the pool smells like you.  Although I have the same issue.  So either I smell like you for some reason or its tough to get the pool smell off.

I have the same problem when I swim at the gym (indoor) pool, swim specific shampoo and body wash doesn't help.  It doesn't happen when I swim at the outdoor pool??? Is it chlorine concentrations in the indoor pool maybe?

Really interested to see if this is just a common problem of if someone else has an answer.

I can be 3 says and 5 showers away from my last swim, hop on the trainer and the chlorine fumes come wafting up from my sweat like I'm sweating pool water!

The chemicals get into your pores.

Someone here once suggested hitting the sauna after a swim and it sure seems to help me. (In my case I am bothered by the itching more than the smell though.)

A good sweat helps get the stuff OUT of your skin.

It is important to NOT take a hot shower right after your swim.  The warm water opens your pores up more and the chemicals get down in there.

So, good hot sweat, then a cool rinse off before your normal shower temps!

That's the sweet smell of awesomeness.  You can try a product called Swim Spray that actually works remarkably well.  Here's think link:

Not doubting you, but the this seems contradictory. .. a hot sauna is good, but a hot shower is not-I am confused

Nope. About two, three times a day my office has a hot flash and the temp rises 10 degrees for a couple minutes then goes back to normal. They've been chasing it for a couple years and no one knows what the heck is happening. Anyway every time it does that I start to sweat and can smell the pool even on non-swim days now. It does stick around.

It's not just you! I swim in a low chlorine pool which is really nice but I still use a chlorine removing shampoo/body wash, otherwise I can still smell the chlorine even a shower or two later!

I will second the poster who suggested getting into the sauna after a swim. I hop in the steam room after I'm out of the pool which I do find helps both the itchiness and the smell.

I admit that I actually like the smell.  I only use the excessive body wash because the husband disagrees. Lame!

Oh! I should add that I've been using a body lotion that has 2% salicylic acid, and I use it after I shower at the pool. It helps exfoliated dead skin by maintaining good cell turnover. It is fragrance free but not all that moisturizing, but I think because it's an exfoliant, it helps keep the smell off. It's called Paula's Choice Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA. It's $22 or so but I always get it on sale and you can only buy it at paulaschoice.com. I haven't found a body lotion with salicylic acid at the drugstore, so I have to buy it online. It also helps with keratosis pilaris, which is why I bought it in the first place.

stop peeing in the pool first of all, that makes it smell much worse. The chemicals in your pee interact with the chlorine to produce the stench of which you are referring to.Embarassed

Shower before swimming...shower after swimming...launder your workout stuff. Wow!Seriously, I have success eliminating the chlorine smell with a good body wash, applied with one of those nylon puffy thingies.

I'm just guessing here, but in the Sauna you would be actively sweating... so the pores open up, but water is coming out of them, hence removing the chemicals.  When you take a hot shower, you get the same things happening to your pores, they open, but because you're covered in water the chemicals go in.

My wife always smells like chlorine when she's been swimming a bunch. When we met, she was a competitive collegiate swimmer - because of that, she pretty much ALWAYS smelled like chlorine.

So now when I smell chlorine it reminds me of her. I like it when I can tell she's been in the pool... reminds me of when we first met.

I always wear the chlorine smell proudly, like a badge of honor.  It helps me feel better about spending my time in the pool instead of doing other things.  I'm not sure but I think you are probably the only one smelling it.  Unless some creeper is sniffing you occasionally I bet nobody even notices the smell except for you. Agreed with above, my opinion is there are plenty of worse things I could be smelling of. Swimming = smelling like chlorine. The chlorine smell reminds me I worked hard, and the only person who should be able to smell it is my husband. He's never complained.

Me too. And if I swim in the morning and train again at night... I can smell the chlorine oozing out of my skin.

I use sented body wash (Dove for really dry skin), I use lotion, etc. I still smell it. I doubt anyone else can smell it though. I tend to smell things other people don't.

Last night I swam, and when I went home I soaped all over, then I scrubbed down with some sugar body scrub... then I put body butter on my entire body. Still smelled of pool. *Sigh*
